i was at that game on the kop man utd were 4 - 2 up at half time i think and playing some unbelievable attacking football but jack witham scored 4 that day for wednesday but great game
We lost at Bolton 2-4 that day. First loss of the season and a realisation that this second division (old money) wasn't going to be as easy as first thought.

An excellent few days of reports and photos- I hope there are more to come. The team photo has for me an added air of nostalgia/sadness - seeing Hodgy and Hope next to each other is a reminder that the era of the small goalkeeper was coming to an end. I suppose the last in line for us was Burridge, and he wasn’t good for my nerves! The remarkable thing now is that if you meet one of the current goalkeepers, even the ‘small’ ones tower above you - and I’m 6-foot tall!

Went to the Lane to see our reserves play Preston (original date for the match was 24th April so I presume it was postponed as it rained heavily when I was at the 1st team match at Boro). Not sure if the line up was the same as the below (the club didnt reprint the programme for the rearranged date). Dont remember the score as throughout the game I often looked over my shoulders to look at the 1st teamers at the back of JSS. After the final whistle the 1st teamers in their casual clothes went on the pitch to wave at the crowd. The fans were singing "We are going to win the League", my dad noticed my puzzled look and said to me "Why not?".

Looking at the pavilion scoreboard it revealed that Luton had beaten Cardiff 3-0 which meant that we finished 3 points ahead of Cardiff.

was that the one next to the claymore silent ?

Claymore was a Scottish & Newcastle brewery pub. Tartan bitter was probably the worse beer in town.

Next door were a complex called the 'Four Restaurants' owned by Marsden's Caterers - family company based up Sandygate I think.

Rafferty's was probably part of that complex.

County Cup semi final

Rotherham 0 Blades 4 (Ford 3, Reece)

It rained heavily that night and in some areas the ball got stuck in the puddles. David Ford took Dearden's place ( Dearden was in hospital having a cartilage op) in the only change from the previous match. I dont remember any of the goals and dont remember being aware that Ford got a hat trick that night! Colin Addison came on as sub replacing Reece. It was the last time I saw him play.

FA Cup final day! Watched the final at my twin uncles house at Hartley Brook Road. I wanted Liverpool to win but my dad preferred Arsenal!

0-0 at full time. Early in extra time Liverpool's Steve Heighway (a Blade fan) broke the deadlock with a cross shot from the left wing. Either Eddie Kelly or George Graham equalised for Arsenal, from one camera shot it looked like Graham got the last touch but in another camera shot it looked like Graham didnt get the last touch! In the 2nd half of extra time, Charlie George scored the winner with a good shot and celebrated by lying flat on his back. In the following week and next few weeks, Charlie's goal celebration was copied by kids at my school playground or at my local park in a kickabout!

This was the first Cup final I remember watching. Wanted Arsenal to win, don’t know why?

And the Bert family inconveniently got a colour telly 3 days after the Cup Final
1972 was my first FA Cup final watching it on colour TV. Watched it at my Uncle Pete's house at Abney Close. Watched 1973 final there too

Spring 71 saw us relatively early adopters of colour TV.

Remember being blown away by the Cup Final, followed by England v Scotland at Wembley and Geoff Lewis in bright green and yellow winning the Derby on Mill Reef.

Good to see Fred White, exceptionally nice feller, good servant to the club and United have had many through out their history. One of many who's footballing careers were affected by a World War.
He made 8 apps. for Owls 1944-45 amongst 20 guest apps. for 6 teams during WW2.
Fred signed in 1937 but didn't make his league debut until Oct 1947, with his initial debut, Blades XI, in a BM, April '39. 1st team debut Dec '39 WW2 (2-3 away win at S6). FAC debut Jan '47.
Most of this info was gleaned from one of the many excellent books on the Blades, except the fact he was a nice feller, that's first hand from my encounter with him some time ago and mentioned on this thread.

first colour fa cup final was the 1969 final between man city and leicester i think the 2 games between chelsea and leeds the year after were 2 brutal affairs if they had been played today each side would have ended up with 8 players each in both games lol

Rafferty's was upstairs, two floors up, on Arundel Gate not far from Oyl in t'rooerd, in the building opposite the Mulberry Tavern.

It was a fish and chips restaurant, and used to do those massive cod fillets in over crispy batter and giant chips. Shamefully however, they never had Henderson's Relish, which is frankly illegal in my eyes.

It was one of those 'it's thi birthday son, we're tekkin' thi ter Raffs' treats where because you were eating posh, your world was complete.

20 or 33 bus to town and back. Can't be too snooty, can we?
