Yes, this is Wilder’s legacy. But, for me, that shouldn’t be the big criticism of him it appears to be. He’s assembled a squad which dramatically over-achieved to do what it did, and he’s operated with a budget which has made it near impossible to raise the quality to the level required.
When we were flying up the leagues, we were loving it. When we were finishing 9th in the Premier League, we were loving it.
But what a lot of people were also loving was we did it. We were regularly at the bottom of the wage bill tables. Even in the Championship.
We loved the fact that Wilder had done this with a team of supposed “journeymen”. Players picked up off the scrap heap and turned into footballers who could cut it at the top level.
Our first season in the Premier League was with a huge core of players who were basically Championship and League One players. Basham, Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, McGoldrick, we all know the names. We rejoiced in this.
The rest of the squad was made up of a bunch of players who were also, at best, Championship players. We didn’t get to see them much last year, but I think we knew that when signing the likes of Ben Osborn, Jack Robinson and co., we weren’t doing so because they were brilliant players. They were decent players, good characters, but ultimately cheap and in our budget.
All in, it was the squad we could afford.
But then comes the issue. The gap in class between the Premier League and the Championship is bigger than ever. This was ALWAYS going to catch up with us, unless you seriously revamp the side. And that costs a bomb in transfer fees AND wages.
Wilder’s biggest failing was that he took this side so far, continued similar success with our budget was nearly impossible. I’m not sure what the people now criticising his legacy expected. We knew we had a cheap as chips squad, we knew we were punching above our weight.
Yes, I know. We should’ve got to the Premier League and set about signing more Premier League standard players. But, on our wage budget, that’s easier said than done. We could have used the foreign market more, and I still don’t know why that happened, but I honestly think Wilder tried.
The fact is we massively overachieved. This season, we didn’t. I’m not even sure we've underachieved, based on our squad. For sure there were major faults for Wilder. Most problematic was we didn’t fix our issue with creating chances. Ultimately, we hoped Wilder would set us up to prosper long-term, and I’m as gutted as anyone that it doesn’t look like it.
Right now, given the wealth of our owner, the quality of our players, the size of our fan base, all of that, we’re a decent Championship team. Unless the Prince is able to pump in more money, that is our position for the foreseeable. The occasional season in the Premier League, maybe, but we’ll need major change to get behind that. It makes me feel very fucking uneasy that the same people who were loving the success of our journeyman squad last year are now bemoaning the legacy, when we’re not even a year further on.
Money is everything in football this days. Wilder just helped us forgot about that for a bit. Only very few exceptional managers can do that.
