My father in law joined the navy in 1953, as a 'Ping Bo's'un' (Sonar)

He left in 1987 as the most senior underwater warfare instructor in the Royal Navy. He could have been sat in that class. He was a sub hunter by trade.

That film, with other naval classics like 'In Which We Serve' with the outstandingly aloof Noel Coward is shown regularly at sea (usually on a Sunday) in messdecks, even today. Mess members don their lifejackets and anti flash hoods when the characters in the films do and many lines from both films are used frequently.

My late Dad was a morse code operator in Submarines during World War 2, as a young man. I still have pictures of him with the rest of the crew, I have his Navy issue shaving kit, stuff like that. I remember as a kid he used to go (about once a month) to "The Submariners" club, with my "Uncle" Derek (who was not a blood relative, he served with my Dad from being young lads together).

On a separate topic, I still have my grandads medals from World War 1, and a copy of the Sheffield newspaper from 1914 when his picture is on the front page, along with lots of others who had volunteered to go to war, with the headline "Our Brave Lads", they all appear to be about 15 or 16 years old, I would imagine very few came back.
