Is Wilders reputation in danger?

After spending over £120m in 2seasons- a total more then our entire transfer history to produce the worst ever team in the history of top flight football - I think his reputation is in tatters. The interview yesterday where once again he justifies his inept tactics and team selections by listing the opposition team was obscene. Once again hiding his mouth a clear sign he knows he is lying.
What is more soul destroying is that in Ramsdales interview Aaron trotted out similar garbage, as if he'd been brainwashed to tow the line - despite producing the best performance of his blades career. Not only does Emperor Wilder have no clothes to cling to - his management is crapping on the pitch every week. The sooner the surrender monkey is gone and is replaced by someone with some nous, the better.

When you get your way, you're gonna absolutely love League One. It's amazing losing to the likes have Southend, you just love it.

Jeses wept.

It's as if these idiots have no memory, think the likes of Liverpool are mere walkovers and our squad of journeymen would have been brought up through the leagues by absolutely any fool.

Wilder will be managing Sheffield United next season. I hope you can cope

I said after 2018-19 that Wilder was second only to Bassett in my United supporting lifetime, and that he wasn't done yet.

After last season, it was very close between them. Not any more.

We have had a lot of things go against us this season, but Wilder has had an awful season in terms of signings and tactics and regression of the existing squad. Just awful.
I’d agree. However, your post does highlight the fragility of these things, when you’re a club squeezing the most out of what you’ve got*.

As soon as Basset lost Deane, our wheels fell off, and the football from the point of was absolutely awful.

For Deane, read JOC and Henderson.

*Basset never had the money Wilder had this term. But also never got to the heights, in terms of quality of football, that Wilder has.

These are the same fans that were moaning in League one are now moaning in the PL. Chris will go down in history as arguably the best manager our club has ever seen.

His legacy doesn’t depend on the the intelligence of some fans who cannot see it. What’s he’s done will live forever.
Sorry, but this season has tainted his legacy. If we continue this trajectory, continue his blindness and stubbornness, then to say the best manager the club has ever seen is quite frankly ridiculous.

The gap between the top and bottom was far far shorter in Bassett's day also.

The revisionism on here around the job Wilder has done to get us to the Premier League in the first place is alarming.

I say this as a huge Wilder fan going back to his Halifax days, but yes, surely his reputation is/will be in danger going forward. Unfortunately Wilder looks like he has lost his fight and belief. One thing is for sure next season is a big season for him no doubt, if he can get the fight back and launch a serious assault on promotion next season then he may yet keep his reputation in tact with some minor blemishes. However, start badly next season and his reputation will definitely have been impacted.

Yes, there are a ton of mitigating factors this season, but one thing that will not be lost is Wilder's loss of fight and hope, he looks lost, beaten and lacking leadership right now. Roy Keane was spot on in his analysis and that does not bode well for Wilder; yes of course he will always be offered jobs lower down the pyramid but how many chairman at Premier/Championship level would be cautious given the last 12months. Huge period coming up for Wilder over the next 6 months, and yet again, I say this as a Halifax fan that has followed Wilder's progress and loved seeing his success over the last 6 or 7 years.

Not from me. And from most others based on online polls. Wilder is my number 1. He’s still took us further than Basset (up one division), and the quality of football sets them apart.

Both legends for me though.

Wilder has one of the the best record as United manager in his first 200 games in charge which says it all. When you factor in that his record includes two promotions it's even more extraordinary. Next season should give him a chance to pad his stats. First 200 games:

I think he’s in danger of getting a new reputation as someone who blames everything and everyone bar himself.

Yes, a lot of things have gone against us this season but some of the tactics, substitutions and player selections have been frankly baffling.

It was clear early on that our system wasn’t effective this time round and we needed to adapt to the loss of JOC and Henderson. We were never going to be a high scoring prolific side but at least we had a solid defenders and a never say die attitude.

Refusing to change that has run our other decent performers into the ground and now they’re out also and we look more threadbare than ever in arguably one of the best leagues in the world.

Those warning signs were there last season after lockdown, we needed a rethink and signings to match, instead of perseverance with the same system, same players and same “well we can’t compete” attitude we’ve seen this season.
That’s right just ignore his interview yesterday where he states and I quote “we have all made mistakes including me”.
Why are people determined to just make things up to try and back up their argument? What a bizarre fan base we really have.

McGrath I don’t know where to start with that post. It’s unbelievable we actually have fans who think the way this idiot does.

He’s lying about what you fucking imbecile? Fuck off an lad support one of the top 4 premier league clubs because supporting a team like Sheffield United isn’t for you. Absolute bell end!

Hi Stegosaurus here,

Yes. Look at Paul Jewell, he had great success in the lower leagues. Promotion with Bradford. Took Wigan up twice, kept them up. Then at Derby crashed and burned ... managerial career over and he's become a bit of a punchline for awful manager, when really, he didn't have a bad managerial career.
You missed the failure between Bradford & Wigan.... surprised really.
How do you think Darren Moore will do?

Maybe When we stick 5 past Newton Heath on Sunday, the vultures will be out for Ole - Wilder is now on their radar so a £30m a season 5 year contract might tempt him. As blades we know we are a bit Yoyo so for what he's done for us i wouldn't begrudge him being in charge of a club that can give him a £500m budget. HRH will then go for Poch.... Maybe.
Fuck me a year is a long time in football! Fickle doesn’t even come into it!

Will he stay?

Will he go out the front door?

Will he go out the back door?

His reputation is in danger ONLY if he decides to give in.

Good managers do it more than once - whether it's at the same club or different club.

CWAK need to do it again here, IF he's got any sense.

Moving clubs is running away - and there are plenty that would have him.

he needs to have a word with himself, dust himself off and go again with United next season - and that doesn't mean Newcastle as they and Bruce are following us down.

Basset was relegated twice with us.

I'm making sure to remember the names of every cunt who is preening about how they wanted Wilder sacked 2 minutes into the season, the cunts whose memory stretches back no further than 12 months, the cunts who make baseless accusations against him, the cunts who if ever given a position of influence in the club would not only fail but run us into the fucking ground.
Then I'll easily be able to disregard anything these parasites have to say about Sheffield United ever again.

John Harris had 2 promotions and one relegation and was the team manager twice. from 1959 to 1973 general manager 1968-69
.and a 41.3% win record..

Whilst it hurts me that we will be relegated it is not the fact that we will be relegated that gives me doubts about Wilder....

Its the way we are going down that concerns me - we are not 'playing proper football the sheff utd way' nor have we got the same mentality that brought us to the top table and gave us huge success.

Something has happened post the Leicester rant - it was never the same after - I don't know what but something - I also think there's something gone off between him and the owner - either this or Wilder is having a complete and utter breakdown.

Wilder & Porterfield identical?

His reputation has definitely been damaged, both among our fans and in the wider footballing world. I don’t think he’d be a strong candidate for a Premier League job or maybe even a top Championship job at the moment. That’s why I think it’s a bit rich (to say the least) to suggest the club has a job on getting him to stay this summer.

But a strong majority of our fans want him to stay and have another crack at the Championship. He will have chance to rebuild his reputation again.

I really like the bloke but his interviews are becoming worryingly Warnock-esque in their repetitiveness.

They've been worrying all season. It was hugely noticeable how his demeanour changed after the first few results.
He went completely into his shell, and I think the team went with him.

The 'little old Sheffield United' bollocks really annoys me. Last season we competed, this season we've just decided as a club (players and manager) that we can't, seemingly because JOC and Henderson aren't playing?! Doesn't make sense to me.

A fickle thing are the affections of football supporters.

It's certainly been a massive let down after the unexpected success of the previous season. Trouble is, there was never a better time for the club to invest in quality players, the type of player whose calibre, whilst not unquestioned, might have been worth investing in, an example being Cash or Watkins at Villa. I recall we were interested in the players, but our reluctance to pay relatively higher wages was always going to be our downfall. I mean, who'd go to a club that wouldn't offer a wage that was comparable with most mid-table Prem clubs? I appreciate that there has to be a line drawn that says we'll go so far but no further financially, but that begs the question, what was the point of getting to the Premiership if we weren't serious about competing?

So we were left with putting our manager out to dry. The resources offered by our board were, by Prem standards, miserly in comparison. Yes, we bought players at the £20 mil mark, one, Berge, a qualified class act when the mood seemed to take him, the other, Brewster, we seemed to get giddy at the fact that we were buying a Liverpool player. Whatever the reasons that support Brewster's purchase, so far I think it's reasonable to describe his impact as underwhelming. And that just about describes our season, one where very early on, it seemed fair to say we were going under, like a drowning man without the faintest hope of help being offered.

Perspective is needed, we are a club that has little or no aspiration, let alone ambition. It's always been the case, we seem to accept the role of being footballing versions of lambs to the slaughter. We have the barely wealthy owner, a Saudi whose wealth was never going to be enough to make our time in the Prem an exciting affair. Maybe next season we'll achieve promotion, maybe we won't, but I'll support the team no matter what. I just wish we had a better level of financial support to enable our manager to strengthen on terms that we could all recognise as worthy of a club who were serious about being a Prem club.

Don't hold your breath fellow Blades, there are no givens in football. Talk of walking the Championship is beyond misguided. Next season will be the time to strengthen with the addition of quality talent, sadly I've a feeling that hope will be squashed by our board as we add players who aren't even established first team players with their current clubs.

Sorry, missed that rider.

Should add some disclaimers. The above tables are only the first 200 league games. They are reproduced from the last page of the Liverpool programme courtesy of Andrew Kirkham. Wilder's relegation should be technically deleted from my chart as his 200th game was West Ham away and we weren't mathematically down then. The final game of this league campaign will be Wilder's 214th in charge.

It’s not so black and white.

Take Warnock....he’s always been a total failure in the Premier League but it’s not damaged his chances of gaining a job
....and is always in demand at Championship level.

Regards Wilder he has a brilliant record in league 1 and 2.
In those two divisions his stock is still very very high....he can basically name his club.

At Championship level...he’s performed brilliantly but it was only 2 seasons.
Suspect he still has a good reputation and will have no problem finding jobs in the Championship.

Like Warnock....it’s in the PL where Wilder‘s reputation has been damaged.
Doubt any PL would be interested in Wilder now.....but there wasn’t that much interest last season either....so little has changed.

We all admire what he has done for the club, bringing us a terrific 4 years of excitement and optimism. This season, he seems to have lost his mojo. Perhaps he had become a little complacent and took his eye off the ball slightly. Certainly, he has assembled an unbalanced squad with a midfield that lacks in numbers as well as quality. AK and CW were such an innovative pair, who brought a flowing and exciting brand of football to the Lane. For the first half of last season this continued to pay dividends. Now that we are struggling, this innovation seems to have been replaced by resignation and inflexibility. The usual Blades ill fortune with injuries and the impact of COVID has compounded our problems, but it is up to a highly paid manager, which CW is, to find solutions and adapt to whatever situation by which he is confronted. Hopefully, next season, after a battery recharge, CW will reurn hell bent on getting us moving forward again.
