Let’s get one thing clear I’m not wanting him to go and I’m not saying many people are. We’re all aware of the amazing job he’s done etc etc etc but is his stubbornness of not changing style and formation a factor of our current standing?
There’s lots of arguments we can throw about like budgets, wage structures, injuries and a load more things into the mix but I’m sensing he’s losing a bit of respect amongst a lot of fans for not changing things up.
If we get off to a bad start in the championship next season I can see him getting the bullet and it’ll be sad to take after these last few years but as he says himself “nobody is bigger than the club”

These are the same fans that were moaning in League one are now moaning in the PL. Chris will go down in history as arguably the best manager our club has ever seen.

His legacy doesn’t depend on the the intelligence of some fans who cannot see it. What’s he’s done will live forever.

I said after 2018-19 that Wilder was second only to Bassett in my United supporting lifetime, and that he wasn't done yet.

After last season, it was very close between them. Not any more.

We have had a lot of things go against us this season, but Wilder has had an awful season in terms of signings and tactics and regression of the existing squad. Just awful.

Chris Wilders reputation is not in danger because Chris Wilder will make sure everyone that wants to know understands;

1, how much his hands have been tied this season
2, how we can't compete on transfer fees
3, how we can't compete on wages
4, how he can't name a full bench
5, how crap VAR is
6, how unlucky we have been with injuries
7, how good we are in training
8, how we can't compete with world class stars

Now some of those points may indeed be true but he will leave out anything that could possibly attach responsibility to himself......so don't you worry, Chris Wilder will be fine and I would expect him to take over at Burnley if Dyche takes the Celtic job....

No. Freak of a season. If people fail to see that and right off the greatest manager, for almost 3 decades, then they're failing to see things objectively. United teams under CWAK have a the best win % in the clubs history*. That's the only stat that matters. We win more games when he / they're at the helm.

* 2 others have better stats but one (Cec Coldwell) only managed a single game and won and the other (Archie Clark) only had 20 games as an 'acting' manager.

Danny Wilson has the best win % in modern times at SUFC

I was moaning in League One. We were shit.

I think he’s in danger of getting a new reputation as someone who blames everything and everyone bar himself.

Yes, a lot of things have gone against us this season but some of the tactics, substitutions and player selections have been frankly baffling.

It was clear early on that our system wasn’t effective this time round and we needed to adapt to the loss of JOC and Henderson. We were never going to be a high scoring prolific side but at least we had a solid defenders and a never say die attitude.

Refusing to change that has run our other decent performers into the ground and now they’re out also and we look more threadbare than ever in arguably one of the best leagues in the world.

Those warning signs were there last season after lockdown, we needed a rethink and signings to match, instead of perseverance with the same system, same players and same “well we can’t compete” attitude we’ve seen this season.

Some people on here clearly don’t know the difference between reasonable debate and rabid criticism.....

My thoughts exactly sticking with 3-5-2 when we don't have the players for it will be his downfall.

Crap - Basett's record is better for a start and John Harris better still. History didn't start 5 years ago.

At the moment I would say as a lower league manager Wilder is arguably better than Warnock. But in the Championship and PL he has had 4 seasons 1 good, 1 very good, 1 excellent and 1 fucking horrible.

If he is still here next season let's see how he does eh.

I can't see how one poor season out of pretty much an entire career of success damages his reputation.

Frankly I'm still amazed he got us promoted in the first place. People seem to take a lot for granted at the moment.

The system we play gets the maximum out of the limited set of players we've got. I can't see how binning off something that's had great success is suddenly going to mark a stunning change in results.

I see the old magic wand of we should sign better players is coming out as well.

Let's calm our frustrations, accept we're getting relegated and at least comprehend the job Wilder has done to get us to playing the likes of Liverpool in the first place.

Hi Stegosaurus here,

Yes. Look at Paul Jewell, he had great success in the lower leagues. Promotion with Bradford. Took Wigan up twice, kept them up. Then at Derby crashed and burned ... managerial career over and he's become a bit of a punchline for awful manager, when really, he didn't have a bad managerial career.

Let’s see what he does in the summer and next season before we decide how historically good he is.
One poor season out of five doesn’t define him, but two out of six might

How does he get the blame for injuries , budget , stevens , Norwood , lundstam , fleck turning to mush but having to play them cos he has no choice , moose being a complete knob ?
A lot has conspired this season and no one cuts him any slack for it , this is not a pop at the prince btw ... considering his wealth or lack of wealth and covid he’s done what he can !

But he does tell them what to do and in which formation to play, he also made such horrendous mistakes in the transfer windows that we are still forced to play the likes of Stevens, Norwood and Lundstram....but that's not Wilders fault of course...

Different times, different pitches, different rules and even a different ball and let's not get on to the money involved eh. the trouble with statistics is that they look nice and neat on paper but they only tell you half the story, and we will never know the full one.
How can a team so strong one season suddenly become so weak ? is it the players who have lost their motivation or the manager who's lost his way ?
Look at Liverpool, no one in the world could live with them last season, this season their struggling to stay in the top six, has their manager suddenly lost his touch or has the team run out of steam ?
who knows.
What ever the reason all WE can do about it is sit back and hope they have wider goals in the Championship...... :tumbleweed:

For me no the things he’s achieved stand alone and won’t be soured by anything that comes after this point any managers reputation is a complicated one by the time they leave a club. Also last night’s performance and interview weren’t particularly bad imo.

After spending over £120m in 2seasons- a total more then our entire transfer history to produce the worst ever team in the history of top flight football - I think his reputation is in tatters. The interview yesterday where once again he justifies his inept tactics and team selections by listing the opposition team was obscene. Once again hiding his mouth a clear sign he knows he is lying.
What is more soul destroying is that in Ramsdales interview Aaron trotted out similar garbage, as if he'd been brainwashed to tow the line - despite producing the best performance of his blades career. Not only does Emperor Wilder have no clothes to cling to - his management is crapping on the pitch every week. The sooner the surrender monkey is gone and is replaced by someone with some nous, the better.

I move for this season to be stricken from the records. At the very least it should be remembered for a string of freak results across the board. Wilder doesn't exactly come well out of it but I'd still far rather he had the chance at recovering from it than replacing him.

Actually I would argue that average points gained per game is more important than win % (yes there is a difference) after all the number of wins isn't how the table is calculated, its the total amount of points you accrue including draws.

If we gain less than 22 points this season, which is pretty much nailed on, Warnock will end up having a better average points per game ratio in the Premier League.

Yes, his reputation will be damaged. But people are too bi-polar about managers anyway - a few wins and they are the Messiah, a run of losses and they are utter frauds stealing a living. Truth is, like every human being, all managers have character traits which can be strengths in some circumstances but disastrous in others.
I think we are all agreed about Wilder's key characteristics:
Stubbornness -
Pros: great asset when he is having to battle difficult odds.
Cons: Disastrous when he is clearly wrong, but won't admit it.

Man management and work ethic -
Pros: great at getting an insane work-rate and good performances out of average players - and really deserves more credit than he is getting for maintaining positivity in the team given the truly awful results (and performances).
Cons: Seems to have had less success with creative, flair players

Tactics -
Pros: Likes well drilled teams that play to a very clear game plan, which means you can beat teams that have better individual players.
Cons: Insisting on rigid game plan means he doesn't pick/can't get the best out of creative players who need more freedom

Character - Pragmatic, realistic, down to earth. Maybe could do with being more arrogant and challenging if he wants a job at one of the top clubs
