It's a fundamental problem of social media, whereby a tiny number of people can be heard by an enormous number of people.
Need to balance reacting and punishing them correctly and overreacting and assuming it is a widespread issue, or some over zealous controls being introduced.

Some say you expect abuse in their job.
You and I work in a similarly undervalued, dangerous, job.
One of my colleagues says we expect a beating every so often. Pathetic that.
No one deserves abuse which gets threatening, no matter who they may be.
Even if they do earn a fortune.

It’s not as if the world isn’t shit enough as it is at the moment. But some cretins cannot understand why people who get paid more, drive faster cars and have nicer wife’s should be allowed to live a normal life without being a wanker to them over a social media platform.

As regards punishment, don't listen, switch off, then the perpetrators waste there own time and energy, listening and picking up the baton fuels there egos.

Maybe you did miss it, but you’d have to be extraordinarily thick or naive to believe that players don’t haunt boards like this one. - we’ve all done it, checking to see if they’ve spelt your name right after a cricket weekend, or if you’re the local hero again.

You said it was churlish that they would go to the police. How are they going to be punished without the involvement of the police and what do you think people should be "allowed to do" if that doesn't mean going to the police?

But there’s at least one poster, who serially insults our players on here, who tells us this is not so, and that his sweary abusive rants make zero impact beyond the board. Despite the board’s owners repeatedly noting that players, and others from the club, are all over the forum.

I know very little of social media but have heard and read of your solution in the past. Appears good to me, not right the platforms should have benefits(advertising presumably)without the responsibility.

Anything racist is never justifiable but just out of interest how many of you on here have sang the referees a wanker or shouted abuse at a referee at some point whilst watching football... I'm guessing all of you unless we have an unusually high percentage of nuns supporting us

The players are often as bad surrounding and intimidating referees including our players

I'm guessing people are watching the matches, having a few beers stuck at home pissed off about lockdown and use twitter etc as a way to vent their anger. It doesn't make it right but a modicum of common sense needs to be applied

I am really saddened that individuals resort to personal and racist abuse such as this. It has always been the case that you had abuse in grounds but in the main it was people just voicing their opinion maybe drink fuelled or what. It was part and parcel of what one half expected particularly in vociforous parts of the ground. But this is nuts. There is a fine line between saying someone is rubbish, crap etc and sending them a text desparaging their race, sexuality and worse. NOT ON.

Criticism, even fierce criticism is fine in my book. As long as it remains on point, which as far as this board is concerned, means strictly football related criticism.

It’s when it gets into a slanging match with personal insults, abuse and threats.

You made a series of statements, the first of which I found pretty bad, saying people should just ignore abuse hurled at them on social media. Several people pulled you up on it but you just doubled down. I've asked you to explain what you mean by it, since it looked like you'd contradicted yourself and rather than give any sort of reasonable response you resorted to a personal attack. No wonder you don't think abusers should be held to account.
