What rot 12 months ago?

12 months ago we lost 1 game in 12 before losing to City.
Shortly after the turn of the year we seemed to drop our usual style of play and were showing signs of struggling a little. Wilder's persona seemed to change with it although we were still picking up a few points. Not for a econd am I blaming Berge but his arrival coincided with things starting to change.

United are in this mess because of the lack of quality of the players.

What's happening to United re' this run doesn't usually happen, because most managers aren't good enough to get a squad like this in to the PL in the first place.

If your success in the PL is based purely on managerial skills, team spirit, being on the crest of a wave emotionally and being an unknown quantity, then you're vulnerable.

Those qualities are very good, but they're short-lived, fragile, and not enough on their own.

At this level they need to be backed up by ability, and that's the chairman's responsibility as he holds the purse strings.
True.
But when he has loosened those purse strings we have generally bought poor quality and sometimes, some would say, dross.
I do not think the blame lies with the Prince.
Unfortunately, it rests with CW.
However, this situation is so bewildering I do not see any choice but to soldier on with the set up we have.

Probably something to do with playing Liverpool, city x2, arsenal and West Ham? In january. We have to adjust our style of play slightly

We ended the period up to lockdown with 3 wins and a draw.

But I agree post lockdown we have been shit - baring a 4 game spell.

I think the rot began with the scousers 2-0 January spanking - the team could not cope with it, Wilder chose to say they were much better and some of our top players games dipped since then - (Stevens, Fleck &Norwood). Wilder then reinforces with the invisible Retsos, Zivkovic when PL experience was needed. But he wont pay the wages for PL experience and so our boys pay the price.

Oh I just wish this imposter calling himself Chris Wilder would take his mask off and tell us where the real CW is being held captive.

He's changed, almost totally. He changed before this rot set in, maybe around 12 months ago. It pains me to see him now and think back just 12 months how much of a different character he was.
Yep. I find most of those belligerently arguing with any whisper of dissent, do so with a romanticised version of Wilder in mind. The swashbuckling, attack-minded, progressive manager seriously going places. It could be argued he hasn’t been seen consistently for about 18 months. I think we’re all hoping he makes a dramatic return, I’m just not sure he will. Listening to his interviews the approach and attitude has clearly shifted 180. Pass, move, pressure wave, and swam has been replaced with dig in, lump it and hope.

100%. Finishing 9th was glorious, gold-leaf wallpaper hiding some developing cracks. We had clearly started to change our style and approach.

For me enough credit to carry on next season although he is testing my resolve. Can't argue with Bruce over the recruitment it's been a shambles and will I think eventually become the reason that sees CW sadly leave us. Next season we will probably struggle with this squad to break into top 10 of the championship and fingers will be pointed from us and the owner about players costing 10m - 25m who are not cutting it who we are stuck with on hefty wages which will tie our hands in the transfer market.

*but there isn’t the wage budget for PL experience

New contract please, give us all some stability.
You can't give him a new contract based on being bottom of the league and having not won a game in 19 games.

Hopefully the worst is behind us and I’m glad we stuck with him, but he's on a new contract already from last season.

Would be ridiculous to give him a pay rise or extend his current deal when were due to relegated

Love these thread bumps ...Wilder is our man ....
I'm pretty sure lall long standing match attending blades agree .!
We have a passionate former player ,big supporter and a knowledgeable football lad leading our club
Them fuckers across the city can only dream of this scenario....
Believe me they would be dancing in the streets if wilder left ...is that what you want ???

Of course we can. We want him to bring us back up and believe he’s building a squad capable of doing just that. He’s getting relegated because he’s being asked to compete with teams all of whom blow us out the water with wages yet we’re expected to have a better squad. We’re building the background infrastructure to compete and it’s improving year on year since he joined.
We’re still ahead of schedule on the long term plan so he deserves a new deal to see it through.

It was ok to question, and ok to appreciate the bigger picture.

Where will we be in five years? The future is bright under Wilder.

totally agree with you bob and for what its worth i think chris will get us back up next season as well at this time we just cant compete financially at this level and although chris has made mistakes with recruitment the players he brought in were often 2nd or 3rd choices most of the players he wanted to bring in would have kept us up imo if we had the finances for fees and salaries

There’s little doubt mistakes have been made or things haven’t played out quite as expected however whoever has made those mistakes deserves the opportunity to rectify them. No matter the missteps were in a good place so why would you throw the baby out with the bath water? Regardless of the league position we’re in a great place as a club compared and we’ll take stock, rebuild and go again.

I guess I just have a lot more faith in the idea of long-term stability and planning, and the quality of Wilder as a manager, than I do in the idea that you have to sack a manager every time you get in a bad position. Or in the list of managers who would come to us.

I've seen the football that Wilder wants to play and is capable of providing. All sorts of things have gone badly this season and it's admittedly very hard to make excuses for. Still, this has been a bizarre season for football and, as bad as we've been, it's amazing to me we've done quite so badly.

I know this runs against all of modern footballing procedure, but sticking with the plan even in tough times is something that has been known to work in other areas of life.

He’s the 10th best paid premier league manager. So what do you do? You give him a pay rise, or a longer deal? Neither of those are required right now, he's going to be by far the highest paid Championship manager and he has long enough on his current deal to get us back up and prove his worth again on these new terms (like he has done in the past)

Would be ridiculous to give him a new deal as there's literally no need, what more proof of backing does he need? We didn't win for 19 games and he wasn't under any pressure from the board

He has 3 years left on his current deal with an option of an extra year. He's pretty much had a new contract every year he's been with us.

Well, I'd be interested in what some of the Championship managers like Farke is on given their wage bill is larger than ours, even now and Rooney's deal would be interesting. Where's are you getting 10th best paid in the PL from? I'd be interested in that link.

That said, it isn't actually relevant to the point. It doesn't have to be wage rise, as you said it's been renegotiated each year, so it could be a year extension on the same terms.
Of course what it does give us is a clear message that he's here for the long term regardless of relegation, which is always an important message to the players, it's a statement of intent that we're still progressing along our path and on target with our goals, and also stops other clubs with deeper pockets looking to maybe stir the pot a little bit and make him an offer. Most importantly it shows the board are truly behind him, and at no real potential cost because if they aren't going to sack him for the run we've been on, they aren't going to sack him during the length of the deal.

10th best paid manager in the prem ,are you sure about that ?

Bielsa was the biggest shock for me.

Scott Parker was a laugh mind.

The office Leeds scum tell me that Bielsa prefers to pay his coaches out of his own salary so that's why his number is so high. A Bielsa pyramid scheme where he creams a cheeky margin off the top

That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard.

Whilst saving on corp tax - he's paying out additional NI.
