Our recent transfer policy

We can’t afford their wages. We’ve got a wage structure; all clubs have but ours is based on a relatively low wage bill.
We had two options at the end of last season; spend money on transfer fees or sign free transfers and give everyone a new contract, we couldn’t afford to do both. You can have a situation where the best senior players earn more than the squad players, who earn more than the kids etc but you can’t have a situation where two or three players earn double what the rest of the senior players earn. It just doesn’t work.

Works fine at every other club in the world

Goal scorers and goal creators earn more, simple as that.

Doesn't matter whether it's at Barcelona or Stocksbridge Park Steels

But United's way of doing it and the obvious success it has brought for the last 90 odd years can't be argued with I suppose.

Weird how we can afford to throw 100 mil at players who aren't good enough for the league we're in and also not be able to afford to pay players wages that match the league we're in both at the same time.

Ekonomiks.

At least we earned the money through our own endeavours and didn’t rely on handouts from a dolphin strangler.

i agree with your assesment but it just cant work in the premier league most clubs have players on double or triple salaries of others might not be right but if it keeps clubs in the premier league with the huge financial gains it brings its worth it big decision when for the club when we get back up

I love CWAK- 100% want them at the helm next year in the Championship - but regardless of the players wages argument, the purchasing of...

McB, Brewster, Rammers, Berge,Lowe was without doubt the worst bit of transfer business we could have done.

McB- Madine could have done similar.
Brewster- Poor kid
Rammers- Not even an upgrade on Moore
Berge- yes got something but that something ain’t what we need
Lowe- Not good enough to get in Derby’s team- surely that sets the alarm ringing

All gambles that just haven’t paid off sadly for Chris.

I've been pondering a theory regarding our transfers across the last couple of years.

We know that we can't afford big fees and that we're sticking to a wage structure, to protect the financial future of the club. We have spent big in our own terms, and we all know that we haven't got several of those signings right, just yet. Many of those players are for the future, bright youngsters: McBurnie, Brewster, Mousset, Ramsdale, Lowe, Bogle, Berge - who will sign within our wage structure, given their age.

Alternatively, we couldn't even afford the wages of some free signings and Premier League dross and filler such as Wilshere, Welbeck and others.

So, my wondering is, whether Wilder has been bargaining exclusively with PL money - because beyond that, our owners are skint compared to the rest of the division. I wonder whether Wilder has thought "I'll never have this sort of money at any other time, invest it now". In doing so, he's gone for youngsters to try and ensure the longevity of the squad, in the hope that some blossom and grow and we either have a great squad a few years from now, or we sell one or two for profit over the coming years. He's basically playing in the casino, only using the free chips that they give you when you sign up.

Now, I'm not saying he's deliberately expected us to go down this year, we'd all rather stay up. However, I'm wondering whether Wilder has tried to ensure the future of the club if we did, by trying to invest wisely, to act as a true custodian of our club. It's a gamble, as not all of those will come good and of course, under our current pressures, many don't look like astute signings - instead, they look like what they are - up and coming pros, on a lower wage structure against seasoned top-level footballers.

Of course, you might have all realised this long before me and I might just be slow on the uptake! UTB.
Let's home in a couple of seasons if/when we're back Wilder can say "I told you so".

Well thought out post Kozzy. Would make sense given our relative budget.😉

Whether some our fan base has the patience to wear it is another matter.

There's a lot of ifs and buts with regards to who may attract offers but I think our first team next season should look something like this. Also depends on if we stick to a back 3 but let's say we do

Ramsdale (he needs to come out atm though)
New Rcb
Egan
Joc
Bogle/Baldock
Enda/RND
Berge
Fleck
New cam
McBurnie
Brewster/Burke

Bash, sharp, didsy and Norwood would all be great squad players. Bring in a young understudy for Egan someone like pollock at grimsby. Enda and RND can cover joc with Osborn and Lowe also at Lwb. Spend the big money on the new midfielder.

Was playing boring, negative, walking pace losing football all part of his master plan too?

Firstly, let me say that no way do I want Wilder to leave, far from it.

However, not only do I think we've made poor decisions in our recruitment, we've also let go better players than some of the ones that have been brought in. Stearman would get in our side ahead of every other player that's been tried to replace JOC and Jagielka and apparently Rodwell just because at least Stearman would be available to play.

NB - I do know that Stearman is predominantly right footed, but that hasn't stopped Ampadu playing there with more success than Robinson and Bryan.

Thing is, as others have alluded to, there's not much point giving the manager an £80m transfer kitty if you only give him tuppence ha'penny for wages.
