The seemingly imminent signing of Michael Doyle and last week's capture of Marcus Bent has caused inevitable debate on here with those questioning the wisdom of these signings against those who simply want to keep an open mind and give new players a chance.

What we have to recognise as fans is Micky will do his best with what he's given to work with. He cant perform miracles and has to base his recruitment on attitude and individual attributes. Yes we would all like to see an Andy Reid or a Glenn Whelan through the door but lets get a grip shall we?! The money isnt there for players like that and its about time people accepted the fact.

The reassuring thing that people should take from our January dealings so far, is that Micky has identified immediate problems and moved to rectify areas of severe weakness in the side.

The first thing he noticed was that we didnt have a natural left sided player that is fit and as a result we were constantly getting mugged down that side - he signed Mattock.

He then quickly established that we are very light at centre half with no decent experience - he signed Lowry (an Australian international from a PL club).

He recognised that we lack pace and movement up top - he signed Marcus Bent to give us some impetus in that area.

He has also realised that we are a soft touch in the centre of midfield and that we are forever losing the game in the middle of the park - He is signing Doyle (a battling centre mid and experienced campaigner in this division).

The signings might not be pretty, glamorous ones but they have been well thought out and done within our means. We have to roll our sleeves up as a club, get players who can come in and do a job and allow Micky the chance to bring in players with the important qualities to keep us up....rather than jumping straight on his back. The rest of the season is not going to be pretty but you cant expect it to be! We're fighting for our lives. Getting nice, entertaining footballers in to make people clap like seals is not on the agenda.....SURVIVAL IS!

What we cannot accept is how the money we previously had has been frittered away with nothing but decline to show for it !

You seem a bit confused SteelCity.
You say there's no money - does this mean you think Marcus Bent is on a pittance? Very unlikely.
No problem with signing Bent as a firefighter til the end of the season - and if he's fit, for next season as well.
But Doyle is like getting an identikit United midfielder, just like those we've already got and not only that we're signing him permanently.
Looks a very poor signing to me. Hopefully his lengthy career is no guide to him generally being a below average Championship player and he's suddenly going to become the next Charlie Adam.

Fair enough Brampton Blade but we still need to move on and get behind Mickey

I'm not confused at all len. I'm thinking with a very clear mind. Are you confused in thinking United can afford a decent transfer fee for anyone?

Is it any surprise that the likes of Bent and Doyle are out of contract at the end of the season? Doesnt that kind of suggest that United are going for players available for nowt (either now or at the end of the season)?

My point was that he's getting the best players in that we can attain/afford to resolve immediate problems in the side. No confusion.....just common sense and a bit of realism.

Bent's wages will be competitive yes, probably quite high by Championship standards, but are you suggesting he's earning more than Andy Reid or Glen Whelan???? Players that have been suggested as a better option for United!

Bent and Doyle could be the experienced players to help blood youngsters from the academy?

SteelCity, what problem does Doyle solve?

With any luck len, he might be able to win a tackle....show some enthusiasm and energy in the middle....provide a bit of leadership....help stop the opposition playing through us like we're some sort of invisible gas! All existing problems.

Having said all that, I've only seen him 2 or 3 times. As have most of the people who are already slating him on here. As I keep saying, he is not who I would have gone for....but he might be all that's available and I can see the sense based on what I've seen of him in the past.

He is not a Monty! He is not an Andy Reid! He is not a Stephen Quinn. HE'S MICHAEL DOYLE! Give him a chance FFS!

and again we have people assuming that free transfers are free.

The fact is we have spent and will continue to spend money on Doyle. Therefore I withhold the right to question brining in a player to cover a position where we are already paying a senior player one of the highest wages at the club. If we move Monty out this transfer window then I might change my stance but this deal must be costing us around a million pounds minimum.

If Doyle is to be a midfielder in place of Monty then I can see Monty being sold off (probably in the summer). IF Doyle is the same player in a different body but more of a solid force than Monty then Micky might move him on-from what my friend who watches League 2 a lot says MA got Port Vale big and brutish, strong. IF Doyle is a stronger version of Monty who can run with a ball at his feet then he is an improvement on Monty. I'm in agreement that we don't need two senior players for the same position, and so should move Monty on, but none of us know what Micky is going to do next so I'll wait and see before passing my final judgement.

Some of our SCF's are never happy.

He have established that we are skint, therefore to question why we are spending a fair amount of money on a player who is very similar to one we already have is a valid and fair question.

Doyle will become the leader on the park that we have not had all season without Morgs.
He will play in central midfield for the majoroty of the rest of the season and will allow time for Willo, who cannot play every game after being out for 8 months with a back injury, to recover properly.
Micky knows what he is doing. He will sort us out for certain.

No matter how much bleating people do about where the money has gone or whose fault this is or that is - we all know it was pissed on players wages and we have shot our load for now, so f**kin grow a pair and get on with it.

So we could be looking at:

-------------Simmo-------------
Lowton/Calve-Bartley-Lowry-Mattock
Yeates/Ward-Doyle-Willo-(Loan LW?) or....Quinn....
-----------Bent-Evans-----------

Sorry Keni, I'll man up now and accept all these great decisions without complaint.

Apologies for my outburst.

I trust Micky ...................BUT.................not McHe'sTheBestWe'veHad !

If only it had just gone on player wages, could just about live with that. Assume you've never heard of Realty, Chengdu and have somehow missed that hotel on Bramall Lane?

I am sure most of us completely forgot since you mentioned yesterday, the day before etc etc

Mods, can we have this man's user name changed from Farty_Bob to BloodySlater_Bob?

I think we've established your point by now Grecian, dont labour it. Are some people criticising this signing without seeing him play first or are they not?

When people say "its a poor signing" or "he's another Monty, waste of time" and other comments of that ilk, I logically interpret that as criticism of the club and the player regarding this deal.....

That is slating/criticising/negative (call it what you want), my point is its premature as the lad hasnt had a chance to prove himself yet. He might be great and he might be crap for all we know.....but lets see first eh?

I doubt any new signing is on more than £5K per week. But let's say it's £10K. It could allow for the sale of Monty or Quinn within the next year and be a postive step forward, and a cost saving.

Lowton/Calve? Is Parrino a mirage or something?

Far from it, he's done a good job since being selected (after what speed said about him too). But he is a center half naturally, so I would prefer him to play there, and while we have Lowton who is a promising youth prospect from our academy I'd like to see him groomed to be our first choice RB.

League table suggests those we've got are not performing.

...well... I'd just like to say 'welcome Micheal Doyle', and while I'm at it, a belated 'welcome' to Micky too..... For all that everyone has said on here - both have chosen to be Blades and therefore I will support them - as a 'fan', that's what I do! They may not be perfect - if I was into 'fantasy football' I'd follow Man City! To be honest, I think the lads have enough to worry about on the pitch at the moment without having to be concerned that their own 'supporters' aren't fully behind them. .. think I've just become a happy clapper...
