A pal of mine who lives in Swansea told me today that he's heard around the town that Leon Britton will definitely return to them during this transfer window.
I for one won't miss him. I appreciate he came with a pretty good pedigree, but, IMO he aint suited to being a Blade. Purely my opinion.
Thoughts please??

who exactly is suited to being a blade?

Think this has been building for a while. Shame, I thought he'd be a real influence on the team.

Wolves and someone else are interested too though apparently.

I think he's a victim of our blood and guts mentality. He was Swansea's anchorman and Pratley was the playmaker. We've expected something completely different.

alcoblade has summed it up in that some believe he's a victim of our blood and guts mentality.

yes but whos blood and guts mentality exactly? its a culture we've needed to shake off for twenty years and largely why we never get refereeing decisions, respect etc i want football i wont go to bramall lane to watch 'triers' any more

Britton passes it sideways and backwards most of the time, is weak, short and slow. He has a good touch, is neat and tidy and pretty accurate when passing it, although he does pick safe options most of the time. The difference between his and the very creative Williamson's passing was huge vs Villa last weekend. Britton can probably be effective in a team that likes to keep possession and where his shortcomings are compensated by mobile, hard working and creative midfielders who have quick and mobile forwards in front of them.

At the moment I think it's easier to replace him with another player type, than changing almost the entire team for him to do his favoured role.

I agree here. But I dont think the answer to our football has to be some SOD football fest. I want us to get the ball forward quickly (with a bit of craft), and to try and win rather than avoid defeat - something that's become the norm over the last 2 years.

At our level you have to blend different players with different strengths. A team full of Brittons will win nothing. But get him in the same deep midfield role we used to have McCall in, and ask him to feed quicker, stronger players in front of him and you're onto a winner.

Blaming Britton for us not creating just isn't fair. McCall had Tonge, Brown and Nuddy in front of him. Who does Britton see when he looks up?

i agree JD but lets build a team around people with a bit of quality - in whatever way. mccabe doesnt bang on about 'the blades way' for nothing... he knows a high percentage of fans date from the bassett era onwards where we sell quality, buy lesser players and somehow hope to muddle through. that worked with bassett and warnock - and indeed kendall - managers who'd been around who knew players who could 'do a job'. unfortunately footballs changed and there arent many managers around now who have that wealth of experience to pick from their pasts... lets hope adams is one of the people left who can... and that mccabe backs him enough to build a team that can at least try and compete. i fear though, that mccabe is expecting him to do it on nothing and with the players we've got (not that we have that many left who arent loanees) and i fear the only way is down in that case

We can't sell Britton this Window, but we can Loan him with a view...

So he'll go out on loan everything will be sorted, fee agreed (and probably paid) Contracts signed, but officially, he's "on-loan" for the season.

Besides, He's said it himself, He's home sick and I couldn't fault him if he went

Exactly. Some of you are perfectly happy to offload one of our few footballers but would riot in the street at the mere thought of getting rid of a couple of ineffective mediocrities. I hope Adams is (eventually) a little more imaginative.

Of course it's easier. Just as agricultural hoofing and aimless flicks are easier than having the courage and skill to retain possession of the ball (or Red Hot Coal as it is known to many of our 'players') when the pressure is on.

Not targeting you Bergen, but that sort of thinking is prevelant at the moment. It is a self-perpetuating philosophy of despair that will see us remain unattractive, unpopular and ultimately unsuccessful for many years to come.

There will always be a reason not to break the mould. I prefer the case for change.

Really? Isn't it a transfer window, pure and simple?

I think there's some rule about not selling Bosmans bought in the same season.

I thought Britton was our best player in the first 5 matches. In a couple of games, he put in better midfield performances than anything I've seen since Brown/McCall. I'll be disappointed if he goes, but if it frees up money for the defence, then it's not the end of the world.

I can't find anything in FIFA's current rules that would stop such a move from going ahead. The only rule i can find is the one about a player not being registered for more than three clubs in a season.

To be honest, I was going on a post from BM the other day with said rule, so quite possible that I'm wide of the mark.

No worries, i suspect the real reason he wants to go back has more to do with the respective clubs positions in the table more than anything else.

Just read that BM thread. One of the BIFFers reckons it's Reid that's signing today, with Kightly on loan as well.

Could be a good day for Sheffield United.

He also reckons that McCabe is personally involved in trying to get Brown to come back to the lane.

A midfield of Kightly, Reid, Brown, Yeates?

I'd take that.

If we have Reid and Kightley in our squad by the end of the day I will involuntarily spuff my pants.

It would be a real shame because currently Williamson and Britton would allow us to have a real quality central midfield pairing both of which can play the ball.

I personally hope Britton pulls through this and settles because despite his lack of form he still looks one of the most comfortable players we have on the ball.

If that happens I will spuff your pants also.

Well said Pinchy.
We are definately the dinosaurs of English football and the supporters just cannot see beyond their nose end.

Kightly has been crocked for so long that I'm not sure what sort of player he will be. If he's anything like he was in the Wolves promotion season then it's a great move.

I wouldn't get too excited buddy. I hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling the guy is a bit of a 'wannabee' ITKer.

Rumours of Brown, Kightly, Reid, Kezman and Soares.

Soares it is then.

Pinchy, you've said before that balance is important and you too have highlighted the need for athleticism. Even under Blackwell and Warnock we didn't have many big, strong players, actually it was more the opposite with very few teams having so many small (but often tenacious) players as us. I think the defensive midfielder's position is an ideal position to have a bit of height and strength in, to protect the centre backs, to go for headers in midfield and help us out in both boxes at set pieces. And no he doesn't have to be a donkey who hoofs it out of touch every time he gets the ball

It's about getting the balance just right and having the right players for the right roles. That I want someone who can give us more than the non-scoring, non-assisting and defensively poor Britton in a defensive midfield role doesn't mean I don't want us to have skilful, exciting players. Actually if we have a strong, well balanced central midfield maybe we can see proper attacking threats in the wide positions, rather than the steady options like Calve, Willamson or Quinn doing a job to make us solid enough.
