Does Wilder definitely choose the players?
It’s in all likelihood a collaborative effort due to time constraints. Mitchell will identify players using his contacts probably then go to watch them himself if he thinks they’re good enough he’d then recommend them to Chris and Alan they’ll go look at them and make the final decision. That would seem the logical order of things. Some anomaly’s in there would be Berge as it’s unlikely Mitchell identifies him from Belgium but Alan and Chris did go to watch him and did sign off on the deal. Another is coulibally as I find it highly unlikely Mitchell, Chris or Alan went to watch him play in Norway especially given what’s going on globally with the virus.

Well the answer to me is sign someone to recruit players solely and tell him to coach them.

In an ideal world where people don’t have emotions yes. But trust is a thing and if wilder doesn’t trust the person identifying the players then he won’t trust the players and probably won’t play them happens a lot at other clubs. The halfway house solution would be to bring in that person to work alongside Paul Mitchell who wilder does clearly trust and has identified some cracking players for us on our rise through the divisions. Maybe have Mitchell for domestic and A another for foreign that way Mitchell can ratify any foreign recommendations which could serve to smooth the process.

You’d make Walt Disney blush if he were still alive with that pile of bollocks. Jags £50,000 a week? Rodwell £30,000 a week? Weetabix in hot milk legs Wilshire? Embarrassing.
Why when people hear 30 50k they automatically think its bollocks?? Do u think players play for fucking pitence in the Premier league just cos its sheffield united?? They'll be on proper wages like it or not believe it or not but to think people will be on 15-20k just cos its sheffield united is bollox.

Oh no...... Chris is a broken man. He's lost it. I thought he looked and sounded bad after the Millwall away defeat at the start of the 2016 L1 season. But he's miles worse now.

If we don't get a Gillingham moment very soon - like in the next 2 games - then I think he may well walk. I'm not saying we will stay up even with a Gillingham moment, but we desperately need this team to rediscover their belief for next season, otherwise we may well do a Sunderland.

If you believe jags is on £50,000 a week and Rodwell is on £30,000 a week then you probably believe in father Xmas and the tooth fairy as well?

At one point tonight we had 4 players against their 2 down the right, and 3 players in the box. That's 7 players beyond thhe 18 yard line, and we didn't even put the ball in the box let alone get a shot off. We just fanny about too much.. Its all too static.
Sad thing is we've been there before so it shouldn't be happening.
Whilst I admire your 'fanaticsm' you relish calling anyone who criticises a pig. I'd say you are the pig, pig ignorant. Allow some debate ffs.

Look who or why do you think this situation arises? Maybe it is the players ability but perhaps, perhaps it is how they are being coached. In which case CW/AK bear a lot of responsibility.

I think we have learnt a lot about CW. That he is stubborn and is certainly not as good as manager as he thinks he is.

As they say what really sets a person is not how good they are when things are doing ok, it is when they are not. At the moment Wilder and his team, particularly his back room team, are failing miserably. He needs a long hard look at himself. I'd like him to work it out, but he is so arrogant I reckon he'll walk because 'he doesn't want a relegation on his cv' (think he said that a few times). We'll see.

The system isn't a sustainable one how many good rcb and lcb that can also take players on and bust a gut overlapping and running back are there really? Should be buying to move to a back 4 tbh instead of relying on a gimmick
Problem is he’s not signed the players to do it. We’ve no wingers only attack minded right backs and nothing at all down the left. He’s completely got himself snookered

Will the real Chris Wilder please stand up? Perhaps this is the real Chris Wilder? It's certainly not the one from the last three seasons. Perhaps it is Mickey Adams in a 'Mission: Impossible' style mask?

Aye. He's got himself tight behind the brown.

Manager is winning - 'I love how honest/blunt/positive/inspirational/funny our manager is, what a guy!'

Manager is losing - 'These interviews are so boring, he just says the same shit over and over. He's lost it/deluded/a beaten man/pathetic, just like Weir/Adams/Adkins.'

Well if u believe certain rumours/reports then luke freeman is supposedly on 37.5k a week?? Make of that what you will I honestly wouldn't know what any of them are truly on its something always up for debate & guessing.

Nah, even when we used to lose I loved it. He was honest, brutally honest, and would say what we were thinking publicly. Made us all feel better and like we knew he’d put right what went wrong. It’s just an excuse laden mess now.

So here's the issue, from my perspective:

A change of manager alone, doesn't fix this, IMO. To suggest it or to expect it, is shortsightedness. The squad depth, squad confidence, squad options (lack of CAMs, wingers and a plan B) are all bigger and harder to fix than a change of manager, and spending in a transfer window. Yes, criticism for that lack of depth can be aimed at the manager and the recruitment.

That said, if we accept that this is, therefore a big project, and that spunkin' moneh in January and/or appointing a new manager alone isn't the solution, then I don't want to see Chris go.

Why? Because I would trust noone more in the Championship. I'm now not setting my hopes on scrambling a last chance PL survival, I'm thinking of the longevity of my club. Wilder is more than capable in the Championship. In contrast, a new manager needs to come in, learn the club, impart their ways and vision, to spend and to build. There's no guarantee they will get that right. In the meantime, we could be in free-fall.

What I will say is that we are all learning at this level, we're all newcomers and we're only one season in - fans, owners, management and players. Last season was incredible, but it's gone. I wonder though, whether it can help us now. I can only imagine how hard it must be when you're trying to play your system, your way, and it isn't leading to 3 points. So in recent weeks, I've been thinking about the ethos of the club, how do we take it back to basics? As a squad, when are we at our best, when were we at our best last season? How did we try to play, what qualities did we show, how can we try to reintroduce those qualities into our play again? What were we doing when we were 'at it' the most? Can we take small steps towards regaining all of that? I believe John Egan wrote a song about it? Something about playing proper football, the Sheff United way...

There may well be an inquest into squad depth, recruitment, spending, lack of tactical options - and rightly so, given what's at stake and what we've spent - but that doesn't mean that heads need to roll and it doesn't mean anyone else could do a better job - we need to remember where we've come from, what we've achieved and remember that that should be respected. We're on this journey together and learning together. If we need to go down, to build and come back stronger for the experience, then so be it - it worked for Burnley.

UTB. ⚔️

Give me finishing 9th in the prem followed by 2 points at Christmas the year after and I'd have taken it at pretty much any time in my life while following the blades.

We had 4 seasons when our team basically surfed on Chris Wilder’s passion and emotion for Sheffield United. When things got shaky there was always this rock of certainty beneath them that gave them self-belief to hang in and come through - battered at Weeds then Basham arriving ... pick your own moment.

What we have now is a Chris who has lost some of his self-belief. That feeds through to the players as uncertainty and makes their decision-making slow and worried, rather than immediate and certain.

When this happens it is why clubs turn to the “keep you up” managers, who get results because their style is simple and certain. The improvement is then not due to the style, but to the removal of uncertainty and worry from the decision-making.

We play complex football, which requires a series of players to make a sequence of good decisions - the slightest error in that chain of decisions breaks down the process. Uncertainty breeds those slow, bad decisions.

So we need to put certainty and confidence back into our team - and it can happen in 3 ways.

1. Chris is replaced by a manager with a less complex approach.

or 2. Chris and Alan themselves find a simpler approach to rebuild the players’ certainty and self-confidence.

or 3. We get relegated and against poorer opposition the improved results will rebuild the certainty in the way we go about our business.

Perish the thought we go for 1 above, I don’t think Chris is about to go for 2, so if we have a patient ownership, fanbase, and a body of players and coaching staff willing to stay with the plan then 3, the classic yoyo approach, will see us coming back better and more confident than before.

Real Magic is a Long-Term Project.

Exactly, the odd loss in a sea of joy meant he could come out a demend better.

What do you do when you keep losing? Which manager on a woeful run gives great interviews that the fans are happy with?

All considered - Wilder's interview was as honest as could be. Uninspiring, but honest. He repeatedly says we don't have or show comparable quality, and we don't /can't create those special goal scoring moments that xxxxx can. I heard that as him acknowledging we're substandard and the continued defeats are of little surprise. Hence only a fool would now expect anything different and this season hasn't bottomed out yet.

He needs to tactfully take focus away from this absymal season and allow us some faith he has a revised longer term plan. If wilder doesn't start to convince that the experience of this season can make us stronger, then he's not managing the situation at all right - I'd even suggest he may be sulking more for his own reputation hit than that of the club.

I disagree with a comment way up the thread that should wilder leave it's down to 'fan pressure'. Absolutely no way would this be the case, the club is shielded.

Will walk after the Palace loss. You heard it here first.
Just think of the pressure on Wilders shoulders nxt season if we not in top 6, everyone be going mad. If he walks it gives someone time to give the players abit of a boost and hopefully some momentum going into the championship...

yes but hes earned the right to try and get us back up imo and yes hes made mistakes in the transfer market but its not his fault we havent been able to bring the quality in needed to stay in the premier league when we cant or wont pay premier league salaries hes been in for the right players numerous times only to be gazzumped by wealthier clubs

He's earned the right to have an extended period to try and turn this disasterous season around. He hasn't earned the right to still be in a job after W0 D2 L13

Said it before, but you cannot pick players like Robinson, Stevens and Osborn and then complain about a lack of quality.

Wilder has a system. I’m fine with that. He used to pick players that fitted that system (the most important being attacking centre backs). If you insist on playing decidedly mediocre players - who don’t even fit the system - you will get a lack of quality.
Robinson, not the best defender. Can't attach to save his life. So why play 5 at the back??

Its really worrying that he can't see what's wrong.

Its been a rock and a hard place for Wilder. He's known, like the rest of us, that we reached our optimum in early spring. He knew where we needed strengthening but hasn't the financial muscle to attract key players. The fans demanded action and he bought from Primark unstead of M&S, we were never going to go to Harrods. The Prince chipped in with capital but not income.

It will be interesting to see what Burnley now do under their new owners ALK; although financial information on ALK is as rare as rocking horse shit so I have no idea where they will be shopping.

UTB and for Pete's sake win one !
