I always wonder what would have happened with us if Warnock had stayed.

Would be very disappointed in Warnock if he took that job (if offered).
Ok he 's a professional but you have to draw a line somewhere..
It would be close to treason and we know what happens to them.😎😃😉
What a load o crap!! Sean Bean and tits like you fucked Warnock off!! That were the downfall o United from that era for 4 years and after! Why the fuck should he be bothered about United after how he and his family were treated at that time! A lot of hypocritical twats on here! Shameful and yer all should be ashamed!!🙄🙄

Some bitter ungrateful morons on here!! Warnock was the best thing to happen at Utd for years on the rise to the PL and the downfall of us for 7 to 8 years was down to shortsighted so called fans who wanted him out ffs!! Wilders getting it now from the same minority!! Tut tut!! 👎👎

Hello William? Your dad still getting you a shirt with your name on the back from every club he goes to?

So a shit 7 or 8 years was down to the fans? Utter bollox.
More down to a poor chairman and decisions.
Warnock took us up and took us down again, Wilder is a better manager.
That's a fair point but I tend to agree with the sentiments regarding the way managers are quickly rounded on. Wilder is a better manager than Warnock IMO but even though his negativity was the reason for our relegation from the premier league I think some of the personal abuse he took was way out of order.

I agree and I suspect the way it's going we will go down this year with a lot fewer than 38 points,

I agree that personal abuse aimed at a manager, a player or staff is wrong, but like all football clubs we have our fair share of armchair managers.
The years under Warnock our fan base grew, some great seasons, but he could never quite get us were we needed to be.

Talk about rose tinting. Warnock's years at United:
1999/00 - picked up the pieces of Heath's disastrous reign. Did well
2000/01 - deeply average midtable finish
2001/02 - even more average
2002/03 - triple assault, almost out of nowhere
2003/04 - after the Lord Mayor's ball. 8th, having been third at the start of February
2004/05 - 8th, never really threatened the playoffs
2005/06 - finally, a decent season (second of 7)
2006/07 - relegation, a horrific collapse in the last four games. 5% Tevez; 95% Warnock and our failing.

Whatever the opposite of rose tinting is, you’ve just done it.

Being realistic? Warnock was a good but not great manager for most of his spell with us, disregarding the first season as he joined in December (he took over after 21 games, we were 21st and finished 16th) his finishes were 10-13-3-8-8-2(p)-18(r). Maybe my memory is tainted by the fact that we should have comfortably stayed up in 2006/07 but we were abject away from home (8 goals scored in 19 games!) and we blew a 5 point lead over West Ham with four games to go. Maybe I wanted more than mid-table second tier mediocrity during my formative years.

We probably will but last season Wilder not only kept us up but did it with some style. Don't think Warnock's managed to keep any team up in the Prem has he?

That said I wish he'd stayed rather than Robson coming in, might well have taken us back up.

As for the way he was treated I've only really seen his side of the story from his book, I'm sure there are others.

Would it have been worse than what actually happened?

I can’t think that it would have been worse than Robson, Weir, Adkins et. al

I think its nailed on Warnock would have done better than Robson, but then again, who wouldn't have. "Sexy" passing football that ended up 15x more turgid than owt Colin served up, and with him went our shot at consolidating.

A cautionary tale if there ever was one.

How was 2000/01 a deeply average mid table finish?

We finished 10th, a couple a points of play off if I remember right.

And 2004/05, we did threaten play offs.

Would have still been better than the 6 years in League One.

Agreed. Elsewhere I've ranked the managers in my lifetime and Warnock is second. The seed sown by the Premier League capitulation which flowered into Bryan Robson - Kevin Blackwell- Mickey Adams - League One was down to Warnock, the cultivation of the whole shitty tree down to McCabe

I'm no big fan of Warnock but to say ending up in L1 was down to him is bizarre, doesn't make any sense and just isn't true.

Like you said at the end there, ultimately it was down to McCabe. He's the one that made that terrible list of appointments following Warnock that you've reeled off.

Even if Warnock had kept us up for a season or two, we might have failed to establish ourselves (just as this current season may pan out) and still could've ended up in L1 albeit it would've been sometime after 2011 (the season we went down to the Championship) because McCabe would still have been the same owner making the same terrible decisions.

Old ground I know, but the club approached the JTW as if it was job done. Shelton was no way near what we needed. Fargo ended up with a decent career but we needed a central midfielder not a right wingback that we would play in central midfield. Killa was decent but was one for the future at that stage and Seko, well who heard of him again? We spent 5m and only the 750k on Stead was any use that season. We spoke a lot at the time but the 1.5-2m we failed to spend on Koumas was a very poor decision. He would have given the creativity we so obviously lacked. To hope Tongy would run midfield when he'd excelled out wide was a leap too far.

Selective quoting there Danny. I said the seed was sown by the PL relegation which was Warnock's fault but that "the cultivation of the whole shitty tree [was] down to McCabe". Simply speaking: I don't blame Warnock for us being in L1. I do blame him for us getting relegated from the PL.
