Instead of replacing first team players with quality that would get into the first team straightaway which automatically strengthens the squad, we’ve had to buy back up players that might get into the team if needed, or developed for the future, why? wage structure, we just cannot compete and build within the structure we have and whilst we performed amazingly last season, with injuries we just don’t have the squad quality, the only way this will change is if the owner sells us on to someone with any major cash or a backer with investment.

Wilder is the man, those wishing him gone are wishing for a one way ticket back to L1 because If the prince is still owner without PL money we won’t even have the cash to compete in the Champ, as we’ve seen he doesn’t have the wealth to run a football club.

At least McCabe's not still involved. Last year was our best bet for a takeover when we were riding high but that ship's now sailed.

Any one would think we are already relegated.

We aren't - far from it - have a little faith in what has got us here.

As for the wage structure - CW has always maintained we have to do it differently, which the club is trying to do - we just have to work a bit harder on the pitch now considering our not so lofty position.

yes i agree that we have been in disadvantage. but i understand why because its a high risk strategy. you could say that villa now look in good shape. but if they had gone down on that on final day. they couldve been in huge financial difficulties & a firesale.

Burnley have managed to work within a wage structure but have had to get relegated and come back once, they will be one of the bottom 4 this season. Their cap is apparently around £45k, I'd hazard a guess that ours is around £35k.

Breaking the wage structure is also a one way ticket to League One (and below)....

If you build your team on high paid players who will jump ship at the first sniff of the ship sinking, you can end up with this catastrophic loss of identity, squad core and dressing room upon being relegated.... And then what happens? see: Stoke, Wigan, Bolton, Sunderland....

Luckily, i see us as a very relegation-resistant team. We have been fairly sensible in that we've gone for big transfer fees with small wages, kept our squad core without breaking the bank. Gave a big F off to those who fell out of line (Duffy and Lunny).

When that relegation day comes, be it this season or beyond, we will have many lads who will stay with us in the Championship and thrive... and the ones who leave to EPL clubs will have earned that opportunity, and good on 'em!

We are carrying some players that aren’t premier league standard and they’re bulking out our squad once they’re gone then that will release funds for wages but I agree we need to offer more to get the players we want but only if we can afford it £100 million from the Premier League doesn’t go far it seems when you have to buy a player for £25 million and then give him £2 million in wages it’s not as though we have massive image rights and branding to add to our turnover like Man Utd

There's always a bigger fish.

Every chance of smashing the wage structure for two or three, and then those two or three leaving for pastures new at clubs offering double what we have, despite our best efforts to pay them rather handsomely.

You've then potentially got the bother of having to deal with the rest of the lads who haven't seen their pay packets plumped up accordingly.

Or, conversely, have them pissed off that this new kid is on a few grand more a week despite turning out to be utter bobbar.

Fine balance, risky business etc. etc.

The problem we have is that we don't have a wide scouting network and therefore we're paying over the odds in fees and struggling with wages. In summer we had to battle with other clubs to sign players and other clubs are more minted than we are and less concerned about sensible recruitment.

Does anybody ever seem interested in us? Is it the club, is it the City? All we seem to attract is people what's looking to make money out us through there business.

Not making excuses, but clearly perspective is needed.

We are victims of our own success. After languishing in League One for what seemed an eternity, and had to cut our cloth accordingly (wages, infrastrstructure, backroom staff, scouting network etc). In that time the financial gulf between the Premier League and Football League has widened even further. There will always exist a gulf, and of course clubs (such as Burnley) have been able establish themselves over a sustained period. But many have fallen back down (Bolton, Wigan, Bournemouth etc)

We've had (relatively) a meteoric rise to the top tier, and have improved our league position much faster than our finances. The kicker on recruitment Effectively we've got to rely on recruiting players who are good enough, and also who no one else in the top flight want. Think Robinson, Watkins & Cash as examples from this summer alone. Any player who another club wants we stand little chance of getting.

This requires rabbit out of the hat / exceptional recruitment, but that in turn requires a top class scouting and data network (see Brentford / Business Model FC), which again we don't have based on our infrastructure. This is where (Berge aside, who was a bit of a coup) we haven't done overly well, and perhaps lack of a foreign scouting network hurts us. However, it's worth noting that regardless as to whether they are Premier League class now, the likes of Berge, Mousset, Brewster, Ramsdale and maybe the Fullbacks and even everyone favourite scapegoat McBurnie are all still young and only going to improve and a couple have massive potential.

Regardless of outcome of this season we are going to be in a much better position moving forwards.

Playing devils advocate. Would you really want to go the other way and pay players literally what they want like what happened at Man City? I imagine City fans were delirious when they first tasted success under the new regime. But I’m not sure how that feeling develops when your club keeps buying success and making the gap even bigger. City will literally never play below PL level, ever again. The ‘dream’ says that’s a good thing. I’m not sure.

I enjoy the ride of being a Sheffield United supporter. I count myself lucky I support a club like us. Yeah, I feel down at the moment but it all forms part of the bigger picture and will - for me - make our next successful chapter even more enjoyable.

Without sounding arrogant it was only a matter of time we got out of league one even without Wilder because we had a good wage bill in that league and was knocking on the door except Adkins season so it would have only been a matter of time IMO we got promoted however he did it in style and the quick succession to the PL was brilliant none the less so I doubt with out him we’d plummet back down there majority of our history have been spent in 1st 2nd division but I agree he’s been the best in recent history and deserves backing totally the last 2 seasons will make him even better now he’s had a taste of the big league UTB

How did Lundstram get told to fuck off?

Chris Wilder offered him a new, improved contract.

A more pertInent question por moi is, how much more money have the “new” PL players come in on compared to the old guard, and how much of a problem has this actually created ??

Now THATS a question I would love to know the answer to !

villa have spent vast amounts again on fees and salaries and initially looked like it was paying off but are just showing signs of faltering of late 1 or 2 injuries i.e grealish and i think they could end up in a relegation battle and would be in deep trouble financially if they went down our policy is the correct one

There was something in one of the papers about the Hammer’s goal being scored by a 45 million quid back-up striker on 125,000 a week.
We are currently swimming in the wrong pond.

This is a very important point in order to be on a level playing field with these clubs we need the better part of a decade at this level oscillating between the top of the champ and the prem. But that said we have spent on players who we think there’s development room in and I know it’s not popular at the moment but we will go as those players go because at 15 million pound plus investment for us is massive and won’t be given up on / moved on from lightly.

People are saying 'We shouldnt be in the premier league' 'We cant compete on finances' 'Blah' 'Blah' 'Blah'. We are SHEFFIELD F***ing UNITED. We deserve to be in the premier just as much as anyone else. No maybe we cant compete on finances, but were are not out of place

Oh I agree I’m not arguing we should just meekly go away and I don’t think we will. Just that we are underdogs for a reason.

I've said the exact same on various threads when discussing wages.

I don't buy into the theory players will get pissed off and squad harmony will go down the drain just because someone comes in on far higher wages provided that player is worth the disparity.

Players aren't stupid and realise when certain players are better than them and therefor worth higher wages. It's when players are paid an absolute fuck load and just aren't worth it. See Ozil at Arsenal. If he had been brought in on that wage at the time of his signing then it probably wouldn't have been so bad as he was genuinely world class at the time. The problem was that he got that contract as an extension when he hadn't really pulled up any trees since signing so I'm not surprised the other players were fucked off.

We are currently swimming in the wrong pond.

Are we though?

That was Haller's 3rd goal for the shammers so he is currently costing £15m per goal on his transfer fee. If we assume he has been employed for 65 weeks his wages have been an extra £2.7m for each goal so he's currently costing them nearly £18m for each of his goals.

Not sure that's the type of pool I ever want us swimming in.

You just want to know if Billy resents McBurnie’s pay packet 😉

what i meant was we didnt pander to their wants like a lot of clubs. Wilder stuck with his offer, and Lundstram stuck with what he wants, fair play... Wilder should have got him in the reserves the minute he made clear he wasnt signing the contract though
