I know there's a thread about Ramsdale but I wanted to start a new one.

I commented on another thread what I thought I at the time to be a joke about Ramsdale's performance and about how he carries himself. Looking back, if I knew he would read it I probably wouldn't have posted it. For that I'm sorry.

Aaron posted this to his Instagram:

I absolutely hate trolling and I think sometimes I think there's a bit of a safety net on this forum but at the end of the day it's an open forum and a form of social media.

Aaron, if you're reading, unlikely but if you are, I apologise. You're a young lad and you shouldn't have to be trolled like you have been.

You'll come good. Sure of it.

People on here forget that the players might read what they say.

They're not playing well. Ramsdale perhaps didn't have his best day. But let's lay off the toxic shite.

He's had one stinker in 8, against Chelsea, in my opinion.

Rest of the games, with the huge gap on the left of our defence, he's done well to keep us in games.

We all need to use the international break to get to grips with the situation we are in, the drop off from challenging for Europe (unexpectedly admittedly) to lining the bottom of the of the table is a big one, but it's where we are, and we just need to get behind them now and hope we're one spot above the drop on the last day.

Shattering our £18m player's confidence isn't a good idea just from a finance point of view, nevermind a decent human point of view.

Yep. They might get a lot of money but some of them are bloody young lads. It's too easy to fling out dog's abuse with social media (and on here).

Only thing I'd change mate is they aren't 'so called' Blades. They're Blades, that care about it- so they (some anyway) want to think a bit harder before they type, especially on Twitter etc. It's a young lad on the receiving end.

Learned tonight that Aaron Ramsdale has just posted on Instagram about a young player who quit the game due to getting abuse. This is very sad
I hope that's not a reflection of where he's at himself. Not that I'd be concerned for him if so. More that he needs to grow a pair.
I was a massive advocate of us signing him and he still has my full support, but if that's a hint that he's crumbling then he can pack his shit and fuck off.

As I've just posted on the other thread, if this is a reflection of where he's at and a hint he's crumbling then he needs to grow a pair or fuck off.
Premier league matches generally get watched by millions of people, you know, supporters, and a minority like to find fame by being sensationalist with over the top criticism.
Look at the shit that was thrown at Henderson, the nonce stuff, and whilst I'm not saying that kind of shit is OK it's part and parcel of being in the highlight these days.
Rammers still has my full support and I was over the moon when we signed him, but he needs to step up and not whinge like a fucking under 7's goalie if things aren't great, not look for pity.

Fucking shameful if he's using this to try and get fans to lay off him.
If I were Chris I'd be ripping him a new one.
No place for surrender monkeys in this team, and if this is what's causing the lack. of team spirit I'd furlough him till his pubes came through.
Big fan Rammers (if you're reading this) but fuck off with the pity shit.
Given today was remembrance day maybe have a watch of some old D day vids and realise how easily you actually have it. You'll be going home at the end of each game. Ffs.

Where does his mental health come into this? So if he’s getting abuse he should just grow a pair or fkoff? Words fail me.....

Could be a George Long scenario over again although this time the stakes are much higher. The fact of the matter is he hasn’t been good enough, people can respectfully have an opinion about that whilst still hoping he turns it around. Sending him private messages to his Instagram telling him he’s shit is probably not the way to go about it.

Mmmm you do realise depression affects even footballers right...

Sometimes not even money or fame can make that go away.

It's a tough one. Any personal insults aimed at him are pathetic and should be called out. On the other hand it's top level football and he will receive criticism. Think how the players of Man Utd or Spurs have felt over the last few seasons. Not only their own fans hammering them but journalists, pundits and neutrals from all over the globe. It's part and parcel of the modern game and you have to be mentally strong to compete at this level.

I think the criticism of Ramsdale this season has has been hugely unjust and he's an easy target following on from the best goalkeeper in England but he has to accept this is going to happen when things are tough. Look at Pickford. Everyone in England is taking the piss out of him and Everton fans want him gone. It's not just Ramsdale this happens too and unfortunately he has to overcome it if he wants a career at the very top.

Fucking idiotic post

There aren't many professions where you're immune from stick altogether. When you're a professional athlete in the biggest sport in the world, watched and analysed by billions. If you're mentally tortured by it, you should pack it in.

If it is a bit much, there are plenty of professions where you won't have to read any criticism whatsoever. Retail could suit, you might get some spit in your eye from time to time, you might get called a cunt to your face, you might get the odd bit of physical abuse. It's better than twats on Facebook calling you shit at football though isn't it?

I'd personally prefer the worst aspect of my job to be sitting at home and reading comments from overweight middle aged blokes slagging me off, it's not even compulsory that you do that either.

To say it shouldn’t affect players is daft in the extreme

I know call centre staff who hate their job, the way they get spoken to etc and that’s from people they’ve never seen and don’t know from Adam behind a phone.

You can have the thickest skin in the world and still be affected by things like this. Players talk about the negative impact of social media all the time, Henderson ironically enough made his account private after the Liverpool game if you remember. He didn’t do that for no reason, he did it because he was getting dogs abuse for making a mistake.

I agree that I have no business telling people what they should or shouldn't be affected by, but in certain environments and professions it's what you've signed up for.

Anyone in the public eye will have things said about them every day online. Any professional athlete, actor, performer etc is a couple of clicks away from reading a load of praise and/or criticism.

I'm not down for personal abuse, but when it relates to your performance, you've got to be able to take it. You can feel whatever you like, but in order to continue doing what you're doing, you have to be able to deal with it. Whether it's an in depth analysis of your performance, or a fat bloke simply calling you shit.

Quite. This is the business we've chosen, as they say.

If it bothers him, he should seek help via the club, and stay off social media.

You do know there is a difference between criticism and abuse don't you?

I can accept some constructive criticism backed up with some sound reasoning, but not plain unadulterated abuse.

Every goal that he concedes is the result of a number of actions taken by a group of individuals involved in that action.

His own actions, with those of his defenders, sometimes his midfielders or strikers and the opposition scorers and players involved.

He is involved in every goal to varying extents, some more or less than others.

Laying the blame solely at his feet is both unfair and unrealistic, and will do nothing to help improve what is going to be a difficult task for him and the team going forward.

Ckures I do, and I don't condone abuse, but in this game not to expect it from some people is just plain stupid. If he can't handle it simply, don't read it.
I can't cope seeing people beheaded so don't watch beheading videos.

A couple of comments from the goalkeepers’ Union:
1. After the draw at Chelsea last season, Henderson came in for massive criticism, totally unjustified. Even more after the Liverpool home game. How many of those critics actually wanted Henderson not to come back to United this season? Goalkeepers, like every other human-being, make mistakes. It is how they get over them that matters.
2. Why would you hate somebody who makes a mistake? If he was accepting bribes to play badly, fair enough. But honest mistakes, behind a nervous team?
