Lowe

How long did it take for you to realise Norwood was a good player? Or Egan was? You can see he’s completely out of his depth. Quality shines through but his lack of ability at this level is apparent

Can you remember how poor O’Connell looked in his first few games? How about Coutts? Sometime it takes players more than 3 games to get up to speed with a new team.

Lowe would be a decent Championship signing but he is miles off PL standard. Chelsea had him on a plate and he made costly mistakes. Another mistake from Wilder in the supposed best window he's ever had.

Sadly feels like we are gambling on signings and none of them are coming up trumps. I love Chris to bits and for me he’s got a job for life.

But McBurnie, Ramsdale, Brewster, Lowe expensive flops. And with hindsight I wished he’d not gambled on any of them.

Ziyech only cost 7 million more than McBurnie it’s enough to make you cry.

Agree 100% they were gambles and not worked but the transfer fee is only part of the story

“so Mr Ziyech do you want to join Sheffield United on £20K a week wages and who finished their first premier League season for a while, in 9th or do you want to join Chelsea on £100K wages a week and who finished in a champions league spot?

so yes a gamble and costly transfers but then look at Chelsea, they gamble and flop at a higher level than us, e.g. a very expensive goalkeeper on their bench today.

part of the issue is not so long ago we were a league 1club with league one infrastructure including our scouting network. We lost our best players due to our league position and we are playing catch up to even be a standard premier league sid having to quickly put that set up in place. Maybe expensive gambles is what we have to do....my only issue is typical Blades to find the only poor (relatively speaking) Saudi Prince

O’Connell, Duffy, K. Freeman yes agreed. Coutts no always thought he was good and backed him

Yes I can. But this is the best league on the planet (allegedly) and in this league you can see a player out of his depth a mile off. (Based on this game). Plus he's not an 17-18 year old, he's 23. Surely he should be entering his prime years now..?

Woodyblade70 I’m not sure the quote worked so thought I’d just tag you.

It’s not necessarily about how old he is. It’s about how quickly he manages to bed in with his new team. Some players take to it straight away, some don’t. It doesn’t matter which league you’re in. Mohamed Salah was sold by Chelsea when he was 24 because they didn’t think he was good enough, now he’s possibly the best player in the league. Sometimes players need a bit of time to get used to their surroundings.

He is lower end championship quality, would like to see Bogle though, he was the main package in the deal.

He was at fault for 3 goals, I too have Derby fans as friends (and in my immediate family), they all told me Lowe was pants but I really thought he looked good against Burnley and had I high hopes, if Wilder rates him that's usually good enough for me but today was an unmitigated disaster. He was truly dreadful.

It's a shame we couldn't land Antonee Robinson. He's a far superior player. Max Lowe was a bit random, he was hardly rated at Championship level & now he's a PL starter. Looks a bit lightweight & disorientated. Was a tough game for him today.

He's young, maybe he can improve. But I agree, as with Brewster (which is more alarming), he doesn't look Prem ready.

He's just not ready for this level. Doesn't mean he never will be though.

Totally agree regarding Salah LJ but Salah at that time when at Chelsea (who were one of the greatest ever premiership teams) would have walked into 70% of premiership teams at the time...would Lowe..? But I do understand where you are coming from.

No not particularly, but I don't like knee jerk headlines with no constructive thought process behind them. He certainly played a part in the second goal yes but Ramsdale should have taken the ball before it ever got near Lowe. Also Enda has played game after game despite being awful, a shadow of the player he was before lock down but keeps getting the managers seal of approval by being picked when everyone can see he needs to be taken out of the team for a bit, yet you think you can deliver a damning verdict on a player after just one poor game?
Endas having a poor spell by his own high standards but let's not gloss over the fact he's playing out of position.

It's only the last couple of games he's been out of position. He's been crap since the restart after lockdown.

Wouldn't disagree but don't think it's helpful playing him left CB. Any CB needs to be decent in the air. Unfortunately, he's not.

And that's where the problems and blame lie in unison. We have spent the best part of £75M on players, who in our current predicament are rendered useless because we are scratching around to fill holes in a defence. Its like trying to plug 11 leaks with 10 fingers at the moment. But for some reason, I have a feeling we will just escape.

Struggling to find positives about any signing apart from Berge since we got promoted.
Robinson C, Robinson J, McBurnie, Freeman, Bogle (not made the bench), Lowe, Rodwell, Ramsdale (lot of money & average up to now with mistakes aplenty), Ravel, Osborne 10 players £80 000 000 & not one has played well enough to be a shoe-in. Add Brewster, early i know, but can't remember a new signing doing absolutely nothing in his first 3 games. Moose looked like being a success but was starting to look like a lazy player who sulks when things go wrong.

Feel sorry for Lowe but it's the Premier League.

He looked absolutely out of his depth tonight. Not just a bad game.

The fact he’s getting a game is CW fault and shows bad decision making on the grounds of the following:

1) Robinson, Jags and even Ampadu are better at LCB than Stevens IMO
2) Stevens is better at LWB than Lowe

So with the decision he’s made he’s made the whole of our LHS weaker than it needs to be with the injury to JOC.

The poor sod had an out of form Stevens and a totally uncommitted prick Lundstram alongside him .As well as a keeper having a bit of a mare .Lampard was his manager not long ago ,did his homework and targeted our left hand side which is our achilles heel atm.

My mate who supports Derby was laughing when we bought Lowe and Bogle, said they couldnt get into their first team so had no idea why we were buying them.
Did he really? On 7 Sept you posted this:

My Derby mate thinks that Sharp is going there way on loan which is what helped us get the their two lads for a decent price.

On twitter there was a furious reaction from Derby fans at the price we paid for the pair. There were lots of comments that Bogle's fee should have been higher than Matty Cash.

Don’t think people understand the situation.

Speak to Derby fans....their assessment of Lowe and Bogle for that matter are weak defenders but very promising going forward.
The MK Dons fans said the same about Baldock........basically they‘re poor fullbacks and have the potential to be great wing backs.

Hence why Wilder doesnot play them as fullbacks, ge plays with a back 5 using his fullbacks as wing-backs...he encourages them to get forward as much as possible. This is a positive but also could make us defensively vulnerable, therefore Basham works with Baldock to protect him and cover when required.
Also OConnell used to come across and cover for Stevens.....these partnerships and understanding were strengthened over 2 seasons.

Obviously Lowe has been thrown into the deep end....this isnt just the PL but we’ve just played 3 of the best teams in world football.
He’s needs developing as a defender but is excellent going forward...if the opposition are too good then Lowe is being forced to defend.
Also when he does try to use his strength and get forward...him and the left centre back need to work as a team and develop an understanding...this takes time.

It makes sense to judge him after a few matches playing bottom half teams
then he should have more opportunities to show us his strengths bombing down the wing putting in crosses.

True mate, he said they had potential but weren't premiership quality. I have changed my tone been all mardy after yesterday.

How is still getting picked every week... Was all over the place and should have been sent off.

Osborne was much better when he replaced him at half time

Lowe was awful tonight. Completely out of position most of the game. Poor defensively (which we knew), but no better going forward (which we bought him for). He might be good enough, but he's a long way off good enough at the moment. I'm struggling to see positives in any of the games he has played so far. Lucky to not get sent off. Osborn was much better. Hope Stevens is fit soon as Lowe isn't the answer.
