I believe the rumour is that agreement has been made between the manager and chairman for 5 new players. Although players will have to be moved out inorder to keep control of the wage bill.

And therein lies the rub. Which of our players that we do not want, will be wanted by other clubs?

The only one i can see is that someone will loan Ched off us. Possibly Kozzy or taylor to a league 1 club. After that i'm struggling.

It's the wage bill which needs to be trimming not money genereated through transfers.

...renewal of contracts changed my mind.

The renewal of contracts of Monty, Quinn, Morgan and Cresswell re-affirmed our ongoing commitment to mediocrity. I have no affinity to this mixture of has-beens and never have beens whatsoever.

Reality is beginning to dawn concerning your parochial favourites. Let's hope GS shows some courage in January.

I never said they were great players, but without them we'd have had about ten players and no guarantee of replacements.

The problem we have is due to backing one manager and his methods/players in the summer only to change course in the autumn.

How right you are.

"There you are Gary, get baling that cesspit out. It's still filling up too, so you'd better look lively. There's a few buckets with big holes in, and a box full of thimbles. You can have the previous baler's shit shovel, but it's use is doubtful. Crack on!"

"Cheers Trev and Kev, can I borrow some more kit? A pump perhaps?"

"Pumps are very expensive to borrow unless they are knackered old reconditioned ones. You can borrow a teacup or a soupbowl."

"Can I buy some pumps in January then? Just a few?"

"If we can get Mr. Dato' Seri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak to pay for them you can have as many as you like. Don't hold your breath though...."

"I'm in a fucking cesspit, and you say don't hold your breath? Brilliant."

We don't know yet if Speed is a "good" manager or not. It's far too early to judge. I've read quite a few posts here that use the Blackwell era to judge Speed! Anyone that thinks you can judge a manager on his supposed performance as an assistant manager really doesn't know what they are on about. They are 2 very different jobs. Blackwell was in charge and Speed was his assistant; there to assist and help carry out Blackwell's plans.

The case for Speed:

1. the change in style to a more passing / less direct approach.

2. improved honesty in post-match interviews

3. the lack of excuses re. players available to him

4. the signing of Andy Reid (a clear intention of how he'd like the style of play to develop)

There's no doubt Speed is a rookie manager and has to learn on the job. We won't challenge for promotion this year but neither will we be relegated. Speed needs to be given time to rebuild with whatever he has available. In my view if we stay up, and signs of development of a squad that will challenge for promotion in 2012-13 are obvious then it's a good 1st year for Speed.

Do all managers big one another up or from this quote does Boothroyd see something that some fans are missing.

Boothroyd : "I'm delighted with that result. Sheffield United are probably the best team we've played this season and we've come away with the result.

"To be honest, they will feel a little bit hard done by. They've hit the woodwork twice and went close on a few other occasions, but we did what we had to do.

"We stood firm when we had to and played football when we could. That was a good combination. The scoreline tells you that. Andy Reid came on for them and he's a Premier League player.

"He's got top-flight quality and he'll get even better when he gets fit. The more games he plays for them the more dangerous he's going to be

He's talking up his team. But he does have a point that if any of those woodwork strikes went in, things could have been very different. It's a truism that goals change games.

I know we keep on saying that the next match is 'critical', but I think the month of November will be a good indication on whether the ship is sinking or still afloat.
We have five matches next month, 2 at home, 3 away, as follows (current league position in brackets)
6th Ipswich Town (H) [11th]
10th Leicester City (A) [19th]
13th Millwall (A) [14th]
20th Crystal Palace (H) [24th]
27th Bristol City (A) [21st]

If we can't rack up some points against that lot, then we deserve to go down.
Andy Reid will have had time to get to know his colleagues.
However... 3 away games. And Palace is on Sky, and we don't seem to turn up for televised games these days.

Gary Speed: The easy target.

A few people are to blame for our current situation and how it has panned out over the last few years. Gary Speed is not one of them.

Thought I'd reprise this given recent developments. I took a pasting on it but looking at the poll it seems the maj now want him gone. Interested in the reasons why if you're one of those who have changed your mind Ladies and Gents.

Can't see it matters whether he stays or goes. The only benefit of him staying might be he's secured some guarantees from McCabe - but then he probably had the same chocolate fireguard stuff when he took the job.
It's a bit bemusing to see those who believe he's a good manager but somehow at the wrong time.
Seems to me there's a touch of the Ched Evans/emperor's new clothes scenario about that. There's nothing in the performances, goals scored column or results that so far indicate a good manager.

If he goes, I wonder what has changed from being set on as manager, to this weekend.

That matters

Wont it just be that he's got the chance of a cushy overpaid number where he can't fail?

I think it's more about the opportunity to manage his country's team. Sure it's "only" Wales, but put yourselves in his shoes, it's a fantastic once in a lifetime opportunity.

He will get the sack anyway from us, so let him have the chance to save his face and go. He has no chance of getting our idiots to play together here maybe the guys in the Welch squad want to play good luck. Thanks anyway.

It was a twice in a lifetime opportunity for Mike Smith and John Toshack.

Bert is not sorry to see him go, we need an experienced manager not a YTS manager. The best times we have had in recent years has been under the likes of Porterfield, Bassett and Warnock, all men who learnt their trade elsewhere before coming to the Lane.

Whatever Gary Speed decides to do Good Luck!
Its not Speedo's fault we are in the sh!t
When he was offered the position of manager what was he promised by McCabe and Birch Whatever he was promised he's had bugger all!
McCabe comes out with lie after lie after lie
Speedo probably has never had to deal with a double dealing conniving can't be trusted individual before and he's probably had enough of trying to make a team out of a set of overpaid, under talented bunch of players who have little or no bottle, skill or respect for the fans!
Speedo you're better off trying to mould Gareth Bale and Co into a decent international team (probably better not to pick our Ched) than putting up with the bag of sh!te currently masquerading as a football team down at BDTBL.
As for a replacement if McCabe has anything to do with the appointment I'll not hold my breath!

Who's that Scandinavian manager you recommended some months ago and how has he got on this season?

But that was always gonna be there for him at sometime, what has changed for him since he took over.

Has Speedo bottled it, or sumat else

It all looks very simple to me. It would appear that he is about to walk because he's been offered a fantastic job that actually brings less pressure and probably a better salary. I'm sure he would have been happy to honour his contract at the lane and work hard to make it a success but he is getting no financial backing whatsoever from the hierarchy and probably feels he can get no more out of the current team without it.....

The directors also seem happy to let him go if they can get a few reddies out of it, so Speedo is left in a situation where he is more valuable as a saleable asset than a first team manager. The right fit for the club and for Gary, is if he walks away from our mess and takes a better job.

Yes, but the Wales job wasn't available then.

It's likely that the harsh reality of dealing with no money and little ability to deal outside transfer windows has taken its' toll too.
