Shearer has just highlighted this on MOTD and many have said this before. We get into good positions but play it square or backwards instead of slinging balls into the box. What do we expect of McB and Brewster if we’re not giving them the opportunity to get on the end of driven crosses?
 



Was just about to start the same thread.. Its fucking criminal, and if I were Webster I'd be wondering what the fuck I got myself into.
 
We are sticking to our tried and tested formula of working the space down the flank and in the corners so that we can deliver a quality ball into the box and create better chances. The problem is it is not working this season. Too often we are losing the ball and the other team then breaks quickly exposing the gaps behind our advanced defenders. Also opposition teams are much wiser now to how we play and generally have an extra defender out wide to counter our overloads. This is something CWAK need to work on..... this elusive Plan B. I'm not sure just lumping hopeful balls into the box is the answer, but I do agree, we need to be a bit smarter and quicker with our deliveries.
 
Hopefully wilder watches motd because it is fucking obvious to everybody else that we should occasionally try and put the ball in the box. It has been this way since he joined the club but has gotten considerably worse during this poor spell.
 
I just get a sense this faffing about won't change in the coming matches and remainder of the season either!

Sure we'll score some goals where we don't mess about with it too much but they'll be on rare occasions.
 
I'd also like to see more players prepared to look for a shooting opportunity. When the ball is played across the area the player who gets it invariable passes it on to the side. I#'m not saying take a shot very time but it seems like players don't think about it. In every sport you have to do things that the opposition don't anticipate. No team wins matches just by playing possession and hope for the perfect passing goal. Last season we did compromise on the number of overlaps that O'Connell did and he is a massive loss. The examples Shearer showed of us overplaying are obvious. Wilder admitted in an interview that the choices made by the players at times was just not good enough. What I do like though is that despite it being another loss and the doom and gloom, we are not getting hammered and are in every game almost to the end.
 
Something has to change we can’t carry on with this approach, Baldocks final ball was terrible yesterday.
Need to go back to playing with a no.10 for me.

Yep, I'm not prepared to be overly critical still, as we haven't played badly overall this season. And only losing by one goal to the best two teams in the country.

But some glaring opportunities to put the cross in yesterday. Sometimes when we take too long it gives the defence a chance to prepare... And that's always been our worst trait, always looks bad when it's going like that.

At home to the S6 bus-parking-massive a couple of years ago was another prime example. Frustrating when it's not being executed efficiently, that's all.

I still think we'll be clear of relegation area by Christmas.
 



This has been issue for some time, it’s not just this season and it’s the downside of playing with wing backs. Both are good at getting forward but neither delivers quality balls - they are defenders, not wingers.
 
Also... it was actually our final ball that was the low point yesterday. If they'd been better we actually might have been defending a lead.

Even Sander's crossing was poor yesterday. A shame, but that's football.

So they send more players to stop the overload then a quick cross would leave less defenders in the box. This would give the attackers a better chance of getting on the end of a cross. So surely a quicker cross would help? Are we waiting for half the team to come over and stop the cross?
 
This was a promising situation yesterday. Baldock on the ball, and Berge making a run behind the full back. If Baldock had played the ball for Berge to run onto he would have taken the LCB with him. Both McBurnie and Brewster would have been in a good position to attack a cross.

3 seconds later. What happened was that Baldock held onto the ball. Our forward runs stopped, Man City got men behind the ball and the ball was played backwards.

This shows us chosing the difficult way to score a goal, against a set defence with men behind the ball. I think situations like these frustrate both Wilder and fans.

Wilder can do something about it by telling Baldock not to do that.

This is the issue with Baldock, and to a lesser extent, Stevens. There's no patience but they also don't release the ball at the right time. Baldock achieved nothing by going inside. He has the perfect opportunity to pass the ball to where Brewster is helpfully pointing, flick it down the line for Berge, simply wait and play Bash in as he runs behind him or even take on the defender himself and put an early cross in.

Instead, he runs into trouble because it's a lot easier to do that than potentially give the ball away. If we're playing wingback they either need to attack the byline or cut inside and run at the defender. Ours will sooner stop, turn back and play a ball backwards and give someone else the responsibility.

It's the easy option all the time. Percentage football. Gives the strikers little or no chance against world class defenders.

Hopefully he will, but lack of vision is a weakness with Baldock. At this moment in time I don't expect him to criticise players individually, but he's criticised players' decision making, etc. At some stage we will get to see what Bogle can offer I'm sure.

A similar one, maybe a ball into McBurnie's feet would have sent him clean through. A chipped ball towards Brewster was another option, or at worst a ball out wide to the overlapping Basham.

I like George as a player - and it would be harsh to drop him as he’s been one of our better players so far this season imo.

That said, we have zero creativity - I can only think of a few changes we can make To improve that and unfortunately for George seeing what bogle can provide us on of them.

We have spend best part of £50m on strikers - we need to give them a chance to finish. And there were numerous opportunities yesterday where the final ball was either crap or wasn’t even delivered.

yep, agreed. It's strange, we don't try the more difficult ball in situations like this when it's the right decision yet we do sometimes when it's the wrong decision.

Our general decision making in the final third needs a lot of improvement.
 
I dont understand why the early driven cross is not used more to create the positional doubt in the defence.

If we stick with 3-5-2 CW is going to have to bring in Bogle as Baldock is offering nothing going forward. Stick with Baldock and we may as well go to a back four and play 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2

Dunno why CW bought Bogle only to leave him out of the 18.
