Must be one of the highest goalscorers against us.

I think you'll find the 2-0 Sunderland win was in Nov/Dec 1990. 🤓

Drinkell v United:

1979-80: hat trick in Grimsby’s 4-0 win over us on last day of the season. We drew 1-1 earlier in the season - don’t know if he played and scored. They go up.

1982-3 - hat trick in Grimsby’s 3-1 win over us in pre season football league trophy. Then we draw them in league cup second round. 3-3 in first leg - Drinkell hat trick. Scoreless in second leg as we win 5-1 (and King Keith scores 3 after coming on as a sub)

1984-5 - fails fitness test before Grimsby play at the Lane. Gary Lund takes his place. We lose 3-2 (the day Cockerill scored and it bounces out and wasnt given). Lund scores a hat trick. Drinkell misses our 2-0 win at Grimsby due to injury.

1985-6 - signs for Norwich. Scores twice in a 4-0 win over us at Carrow Road. Would have had a hat trick but John Burridge pulls a header back over the goal line and the ref misses it. Scores once in Norwich’s 5-2 win at the Lane, with Porterfield sacked after the match.

He never played against us again, happily.

Taking this thread off in a different direction, will any player ever beat the record of Roy Ridge? He was a Utd player for 13 years, and played 11 league games; he went over 6 years in one spell (Nov 1954-Jan 1961) without making a single first-team appearance. Is Kean Bryan the new Roy Ridge?

Thought it was Julian Winter responsible for signing Johns, Brandy, McGinn, McGinty & possibly Lyle Taylor?
Think Winter was the Chief Exec at the time, but Stephenson as Head of Football Operations was I understand it playing more of a Director of Football esque role in making the calls on recruitment. A very different structure back then to what we have now.

Wow ..... does Mesut Ozil know about this ??

Was going to say Emanuele Gabrieli but apparently he went on loan to Boston United.
From a little browse it looks like there may be some names in contention from the 1950s but I'm not sure if anyone is likely to remember them.

We had a lad from Scotland late 70s, early 90s. Mark Burke I think his name was, got a feeling he might never have made an appearance, but may have sneaked off the bench. Help us out here Silent Blade
Played in 2 County Cup games and 3 friendlies for us before moving to Exeter

Bought a completed set of the 1967/68 album at a jumble sale in the mid 1970s . The only player in the Sheffield United page I had not heard of at the time was Willie Smith so I asked my dad if he could remember him. He took a long puzzled look at his photo before saying "Not really, he was a reserve". I would expect the company who set up the album would decide on who the 15 players for each clubs' page to be based on the highest number of appearances in the previous season (1966/67). It was strange that Phil Cliff (2 FL appearances) and Willie Smith (1 FL appearance) got places but not Alan Woodward (41 FL appearances). Willie was signed from a Scottish non league club, played 2 league matches for us (scored on his debut in the 2-1 win at West Brom) plus 1 sub appearance in the FA Cup match at Fulham (you can see him fluffing a chance in the below video from 16 mins 15 secs) before going back to play non league football in Scotland.
