TIL Ben Doane played twenty three times for us (I even saw him score, but genuinely thought that was his only appearance).

If we're only counting league (as in top 4 tiers) games then Ashley Sestanovich is close I think, according to Wikipedia at least. 2 appearances for United (not sure if any were in the league?) and then loan spells at non-league teams - although I think Grimsby might have been the equivalent of League Two at the time?

I was going to call him a man best known for being Thierry Henry's double in an ad, but the post-script to his career is, uh, well...

"In 2006, Sestanovich was arrested and charged with conspiracy to rob from a roofing firm in South London in June 2005 that resulted in the murder of a man who was shot in the chest during the raid.[5] In April 2007, he was found guilty and sentenced to eight years in prison which subsequently ended his professional football career after Grays terminated his contract."

Didn't his one goal (away at Port Vale maybe?) help keep Wednesday up that year?

I meant Doane not Sestanovic but yeah, both monsters!

I either didn't know that this was at stake, or completely forgot, but you're right. Doane scored a late-ish equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Crewe (from memory it was from miles away but not sure if it was a cross that went in). There was about five games left. Crewe went down on goal difference, although there were other teams in the mix at the end:

Exacerbating Doane's monstrous status, his only Blades goal also coincided with the death of the Queen Mother, which I remember hearing about on the radio on the way back. What a bastard.

It's funny what you remember, isn’t it? Although I got the team completely wrong. I think you're right though, he did score from a long way out.

YouTube has outdone itself here. Behold, video footage of Ben Doane scoring a goal:

I've done him a huge disservice as Wards says. Thunderbolt.

Another who fully meets the criteria is James McCormick. Signed from local football by Joe Mercer in 1956, 5 reserve team appearances, into the first team vMiddlesbrough (8 Dec, 1956), shipped out to Rotherham, never played a first team game for them.
And almost meeting the criteria is Hao Haidong, our Chinese international. 1 Cup appearance (sub v Colchester, 2006), returned soon after to China.

Nicky Johns goalkeeper, he never even managed a full game subbed at half time for us.
I think he did play the whole games v Sunderland (League) and Leeds (League Cup). And then disappeared, his confidence shot. He re-surfaced at Charlton, and played plenty of games for them.
If ever we sign a 3rd player called Johns, I am returning my season ticket...

Extra marks for the commentator’s extremely posh pronunciation of Doane there.

Hodgy yes he played once for us mate, like you say at Charlton played almost 300 games and was player of season a few times. I don't know why he was so poor for us that game and confidence shot, if you remember John Hope went through a bad time in net with his confidence.

At least we can't sign Jihadi John now!

He wasn’t signed by David Weir. Him and the other three that came in at the same time (can’t remember them all, was one of them Stephen McGinn?) were all lined up well before Weir arrived.

Edit: they weren’t signed by any of our managers but were brought it by whoever it was running the club at the time, I can’t remember the name (was it Mal Brannigan?)

Not Brannigan. He arrived after Clough. Jason Rockett ?

Possibly, I can’t really recall. All I know is that whoever it was he was responsible to bringing in Jasper Johns and the other three that arrived at the same time.

As I was playing in goal at the time in the lower reaches of the Friendlies League, I can fully understand a goalie going through a bad patch!

I think it was also down to Weir. He was Everton youth team coach so I suspect he had some involvement in signing a player from Everton’s youth team.

This Is not the answer but can anyone remember a goalkeeper called Keith Soloman played in a Friday night friendly against Leeds in early 80s, the poor lad had a heart attack and passed away in training Pretty sure playing the one game for the blades RIP

The name you’re looking for is John Stephenson.

He was on the subs bench

Some other one league starts, although they had at least one other sub appearance...

Steve Hawes v Derby away 7th October 1995
Gary France v QPR home 20th April 1974
Aidan Davison v Crystal Palace home 4th September 1999 (I think Davison's only other appearance was when he came on at Man City in the 6-0 defeat on the 21st August after Tracey had been sent off)
Derby 7th of October 1995 was at the Lane. It was match of the day in Norway and a rare chance to watch a United match live on TV. I'd been looking forward to it for weeks. We were rubbish.

Marco Gabbialdini scored his usual goal against us, of course.

That was, if memory serves, Ross Davidson's second and final league appearance for us. He did not play well.

Remember going to this game too and hearing about the Queen Mother’s death when we got home.

Strangely enough though, I’d no idea what the score was, from memory.

I know I'm continuing on a path away from the point of the thread, but I think this was my second ever game - was it a 2-0 defeat where Derby scored their second about 8 seconds into the second half? What was worse was that we were the team who'd kicked off...

Yes. Think it was Hodges who was going to pass back to Nilsen who was then going to launch it long towards Jostein Flo. But Hodges' pass was too short and Gabbiadini got to it first:

I don’t know how many games I saw Gabbiadini play against us, but I have two distinct memories of my late uncle yelling out “he always bloody scores against us” in games I attended (possibly including this one).

Paul Beesley spoke about him being his worst opponent in the Undr The Cosh podcast.
