🎙️ CW on systems

"It does bring a smile to my face when pundits and other people talk about systems quite blandly without talking about why. My opinion is that the system is OK, and players just have to play better in the system."

Applies to the PlayStation tactical geniuses on here as well ,every time we lost a couple we have to.change the system ,all the players and the manager

You know less than fuck all lads

Yet, one point and two goals. Lost four, drawn one. Minus five goal difference. The team playing like strangers, players previously impervious to fear and the big-time league now playing like they've shit a brick. Areas where we capitalised last season now effectively shut off and ooooh ... second from bottom.

That's what I know.

Wilder doesn't have to, and won't read any of our 'Playstation tactical genius' on here. If he did, I doubt he'd be half the manager he actually is. But one thing is certain. We are conceding far more goals than we are scoring this season and, forgive my 'knowing less than fuck all', I do know that is relegation form.

First paragraph is covered by the not playing well enough part and fuck knows what the second one is on about

It is however noticable that our overloads when we get in the corner are being met with 4 defenders more this season so less opportunity to take advantage. Surely Wilder had noticed this.

Palace did that first home game of last season
Its what we do not what they do

Are you genuinely a new member or just another new account from someone banned several times already?

That's no less worrying if true. The system is fine but the players are just playing a bit shit at the moment.

Let's hope they don't continue being shit.

Its our systen that keeps us in games and gives us chances to score in them.

We often see an unwillingness from some players to be brave in play, but when they do we look more like last season.

Its a confidence and player form thing rather than a system thing.

I've seen a few line ups that seems very naive, probably influenced by boredom and frustration with our start to the season. When arguments like "can't do any worse" are mentioned I don't pay much attention.

Thing is, when it's clearly not working - and it isn't - what's to do?

According to some, we should just hold our counsel and withdraw our opinions. As I have pointed out before on here, if that's the case, maybe Foxy and Lindz should just shut the place down. Maybe people grabbing their first, second pint of the afternoon in the Sportsman or the Railway should simply hush they gums and not comment, good or bad, about the last game.

We may know fuck all compared to Wilder, but the table tells it's own story. Last season, we were playing cavalier, brave and entertaining football and this season, a few soldiers down, we are getting mortared every week. If that is unworthy of comment or even open to layman's suggestions, then what's the point of this place, or football at all?

I think that's where we miss JoC - his pings across to Baldock were superb for a quick switch of play. We now don't have that.

I disagree. I think we are missing one person who stopped a lot of goals last season and gave us at least ten points. We are missing a massive presence in the back three and our midfield is simply not connecting either with each other, or crucially with the front two. And a couple of our purchases up front are now proving to have been duds.

Without all of that, we can't move forward, and can't play to any inherent 'strengths'. And the more teams play us and capitalise, the less formidable we become.

Everybody should be allowed to put their suggestions forward. But I'd be more interested if the ones suggesting for example extremely more attacking line ups contained a few thoughts on how they thought we'd be able to cope defensively.

Last season at Anfield I thought we'd have a 1 in 100 chance of a result. This time it's a better time to play them. Maybe 1 in 10 chance of a result. They've just played Ajax, they've got a few injuries, they're playing Champions League again a few days after us and they've shown they can be vulnerable defensively. On the other hand they managed to beat Ajax with a rotated team and took off their front trio after 60 minutes. And we're not quite as good.

This was my suggestion:

As Jake Robinson was today's player to do the pre match interview I reckon he'll be starting with Enda going to LWB. Not a big change, I don't think our centre halves will bomb forward a lot anyway.

I can also see Wilder picking McGoldrick to start rather than Burke, he'll hold the ball up better, wait for more of our players coming forward into position, probably take some pressure of the defence, which will be needed. Maybe that is what we'll need. There was also a piece in the Star on our "midfield being brilliant without Fleck", suggesting Norwood will keep his place? Again there are postives if that's what we'll go with. Norwood is a good playmaker and will make himself available at all times.

I still think the combination of McGoldrick and Norwood is something that I'd sacrifice. I think Liverpool will have at least 70% possession. We'll need to cope with that. Ampadu at DCM would be interesting. I think he's the best we've got when it comes to protecting the defence. Alongside Lunny (possibly Osborn) and Berge we'd have an athletic and fit trio who are good defensively, but who can also offer quite a bit in possession. I liked Barkley's performance for Villa against Liverpool. Powerful lad, making strong runs from central behind Liverpool's midfield. Why don't we try Burke in such a role, rather than having McGoldrick slowing things down, or McBurnie hanging around up front unemployed with Brewster, with us not getting the ball to them. I don't think they'll enjoy chasing after Burke, Berge and Lundstram if we can get a few decent breaks.

It’s a crude tactic, but I like the idea of Norwood looking long for Burke at Anfield. Having watched Liverpool a few times recently, the gaps they’ve left behind their fullbacks have been ridiculous.

I mean, I thought I had made a decent fist of how a 10 helps defensively...

At the age of 16, Andre Villas-Boas found himself living in the same apartment block as Sir Bobby Robson, who was then manager of Porto. Following a debate between the two, Robson appointed Villas-Boas to Porto's observation department.[10]

Robson arranged for Villas-Boas to obtain the FA coaching qualification, the UEFA C coaching licence in Scotland and for him to study the training methods of Ipswich Town.[9][11] He obtained his C licence at the age of 17, and his B licence at 18. He received his A licence at the age of 19, and later acquired UEFA Pro Licence under the tutelage of Jim Fleeting.[11][12]

What Robson should have done is called him nothing but a PlayStation genius and told him to do one.

Honestly, I’ve no idea why highlighting Wilder being stubborn and hinting he knows better than everyone as a good thing. Name me any other industry where a manager acting like that is even remotely classed as a desirable attribute? Let alone if a football forum isn’t fertile ground for debating tactics, formations and team selections then I’ve clearly lost the fucking plot.

You're right, on occasions maybe Wijnaldum would halt his run to keep an eye on McGoldrick, leaving Bash, Egan and Robinson to deal with Mane, Firmino and Salah ... ;)
To be honest, better that than holding the line like it’s the Russian Front, hoping we can hold out - spoiler alert - we can’t.
