Where does Billy Sharp rank?

The year is almost 2021 and our joint top scorer in the Premier League is a 34 year old who Nigel Adkins signed when we were in League One.

Ain't football just great?

And the other is a soon to be 33 year old that came on a free because nobody wanted to sign him.

Since then we have spent ~£55m on strikers to better them.

That has to be some sort of record?
He didn't get the first goal of each season over the past five seasons. Some of them were our first goal of the season, others were our first home or away goal. However, his next goal will be his 100th for the Blades. Shame he won't be able to celebrate with the fans, as he said in his interview today (unless his next goal isn't until next year that is)

Sharp should start. Sub him when he's knackered, rather than bring him on when our starting strikers have failed to put the ball in the net again.
Be fair, he scored from a penalty today, he didn't look a massively greater threat than McB when he came on

If we aren't allowed next year then it won't make any difference there will be no football clubs left as well as pubs!!
I agree, it’s all pretty pointless at the minute, we are all trying to make the most of the worst situation ever known to this generation, who knows when it will all end or if it will ever end at all.

On a side note, yesterday, a few clubs in the Championship let fans into the stadium to watch the games but they were in the corporate boxes, they had to stay in their seats and shut the curtains, watching it on TVs, how fucking stupid is that? 🤬

No, but he has been assigned the role of the emergency services, he is brought on when the situation is dire. He has a hunger to score the others don't seem to have. He knows how to goal poach and shit-line. The way things are at the moment, it can't be worse to start him, tell him to run his bollocks off, then sub him later. I know it would have been a different game had he been on instead of McBurnie, but if he'd had the same couple of chances, I reckon he'd have finished one of them (conjecture, I know).

You couldn't make this madness up if you tried. But I suppose that's what you get with lunatics running the asylum.

Should have been taken off penalties years ago according to some...

Its getting predictable.
Sharp misses a penalty = he’s crap at penalties.
Sharp scores = he‘s our best striker
Mousset scores = he‘s our best striker
When McBurnie scores then he'll become our best striker.

I predicted weeks ago and lets see if I’m right.

Virtually every Blade said “pay Liverpool whatever they want because he’s the best young striker in the game“

If Brewster doesn’t score in his first 6 games the same Blades will be saying
“he’s a waste of money....it was stupid to spend so much on someone with no PL experience“
”we should have shown ambition and bought Danny Welbeck instead....at least we know he can perform at this level” etc etc

Its a sad indictment of McB and Moose - that I'd still prefer Billy to start in front of them.

And certainly on that pen - of the 3 of them I'd want Billy stepping up all day long.

On a side note - not sure whether its covid but the need/want intensity of Billy to score that goal yesterday was ridiculous. Don't know about you but our household nearly took the roof off.

On a second side note- talk of sacking Chris = plain Barmy - he is and has been our saviour - he has given our club identity- if we go down so what; with him and this brand of footy we'll bounce back..

On a 3rd side note - WE were loads better in that first half with Norwood pulling strings- yes he tired in 2nd half but so did Berge (who is brilliant)

How many of those people are even still alive?

I think 5 are still living: Colin Morris, Deano, Keith Edwards, Billy and Derek Hawksworth (who is 93).

Fun trivia - only one of those players was top scorer in the top division: Arthur Brown in 1905.

Most Championship goals (since the second tier was called the Championship)

McCormack 120
Nugent 113
Sharp 108

edit Rhodes is in here somewhere too but I'm not trawling the records to see how many he's scored it's close to what Sharp has and if it's more it'll soon be surpassed.

Sharp has 4 EPL goals scored in 1203 mins (all for Blades bar 20 for Southampton).
Nugent 14 in 5343 mins
McCormack 12 in 2593 mins
Rhodes 0 in 211 mins
according to FBref.
Obviously evaluating performances is a whole lot more complicated than that in the Prem but the barest of bones stats there.

First person to join the 100 club since King Keith in 1984. Well done Billy!

It's hard to rank as obviously haven't see them all play, but on his ability in the box I'd rate him close to Keith Edwards both were poachers. Edwards did have an excellent free kick in his locker and he was deadly at times, now I'm not comparing Edwards to Pele, but when Pele dummied the GK he missed, Edwards dummied GK and a defender, raised his hand before he put it in net (was it Bristol Rovers memory again).

Woody could score from anywhere and had a shot like a bazooka forget Lorimer, Woody's was harder and more accurate and 1st to score direct from a corner on TV IMS. Colin Morris was a little pocket dynamo and the perfect foil for Edward's it's a pity his bottle slightly went, when he returned from a broken leg.

Deano was the master of the outlandish goal for a tall guy he had incredible close skills, I remember the goals he scored when ball came into him and he sort of stabbed his foot, and ball went over his shoulder into net did it twice IMS sure one was Chester.

Don't forget Agana he may not have scored as many but he scored some absolute humdingers.

I would love to have seen Pace and Hagan both of whom I'm told were sublime, I was once told by a bloke (I worked with) that lived in Woodhouse, if Hagan's name was mentioned men got up and saluted. Don't have a pop at my memory this is how I remember it.

I'm going to be cheeky and include Bobby Davison on the strength of the 2 he got at the sty, my personal choice.

v Bury and Bristol City

Just watch Billy's first goal for us and what it means to him, then Look at Morgan grab him and make sure his feet stay on the ground and his head stays switched on. What a leader Morgs was, I love Egan but in terms of leadership he still has learning and growing to do.

Be interesting to know what Morgan was saying to him.

It was more than just a few words.

The majority of his goals are in 1's as opposed to 2s or hat tricks. The majority of which are 6yd box goals from a jinking run and cross - little defense possible for most of them. Perhaps 10 defenders and Billy or Brewster might get us to the magical 12 points to save Wilder becoming the worst manager in PL history.

What a great watch that was, makes me feel a bit melancholy tbh

Just looking at the full Lane celebrating Billy's goals - then that Norwich match seems an eternity ago - only 10 months and knowing what's happened since :(

Still, the man's a legend. Best goal of that lot? A toss up between Shrewsbury away or Leeds at home, but there were a lot of belters.
