No more signings

To be fair to the club, we have had a very good window.
Needed a starting GK - signed
Needed a versatile CB to compete- signed
Needed 2 WBs to compete - signed
Needed a striker- signed

Unfortunately Mousse and especially JOC getting injured has put a massive turd in the water pipe. That and a lack of midfield creativity has caused a lot of worry...oh and 4 losses of course.
 
We now have a stronger squad than a year ago. Unfortunately that’s coincided with more injuries to the first team than a year ago too. But I’m really pleased with the window – we’ve strengthened in areas where we had gaps and the players in should hopefully be with us long-term.
 
There won't be any singing for a while with this covid bollocks. Empty stadiums for the majority of this season if not all of it. UTB
 
Did he say no more signings or just no defender being signed?

But right now we're weaker. Baldock and Stevens are integral to how we play, yet despite both, mainly Stevens being in poor form, the two wing backs we signed haven't had a look in.

JOC is snapped and Robinson is far inferior.

Mousset was very good this time last year, he broke down.

Our midfield is a year older, and we haven't improved on it from last season.

Unless Brewster is absolutely shit hot, we're weaker everywhere other than having back up wing backs this time.
 
It does concern me that we've not fully exploited the loan market. One loan only when we're crying out for a LCB (tricky) and more creation in midfield (not as tricky).

The midfield is particularly worrying.

I don’t agree with that tbh. Neither wingback was going to come straight in. We’re probably at the point now when they might.

Robinson is a far more capable LCB backup than Bryan was a year ago.

Our options up front last season are better than they were a year ago, even with Mousset’s injury.

A year ago we didn’t have Berge, who offers a genuine alternative to both Norwood and Lundstram.

Ampadu also means we have actual cover for Egan and Basham. In contrast a year ago Jagielka was covering both till Rodwell arrived in January.

We have done nothing to address the problem we have creating chances. Indeed we have made our options worse by shipping Freeman out.

Given the inevitable regression to the mean by the defence (Henderson, aging, injuries etc), this may prove to be a big mistake.
 



Disappointing but not totally unexpected, especially so given our injuries, but as we all know we ain't got a barrel of money. Still.
 
The squad has definitely improved. Hopefully Brewster will mark an improvement for the first XI, which had been the big outlier. Still think it’s a shame we haven’t been able to strengthen at RCM, in my opinion.
 
And I know wages are a big factor, but I am surprised that there is nobody out there who we can use a loan on who might help us.

Do you think the squad is overall weaker than a year ago? I’ll agree that Luke Freeman’s departure reduces the options for that very specific position where he was 3rd choice, but he was always the most likely to move of the 3 options we have there. I do think with the exception of Ramsdale all the signings are better than their counterparts a year ago.

Unpopular opinion, very good player but we didn't need a player like him at all. After he signed and we wedged him in at RCM, we generally looked worse.

Norwood is more effective as the deep midfielder and he's not really suited to bombing up and down as our RCM. He's good there, but not perfectly suited.

Having said that, when a player of his calibre becomes available it's difficult to turn down. I'm hoping that our system evolves over time and we begin to see the best of him, in a more natural position.

The depth we have is better on paper, the starting eleven however, especially now JOC is out, looks worse.

The goalkeeper is worse
The first choice defence is worse, as one of its members will not play this season.

plus that aside, we have real problems re loss of form and other injuries and absences, it seems.

The defence was what we built on. We going to let in 15-20 more goals, and we are going to score less unless the midfield and forwards buck their ideas up.
 
Formation tweak definitely needed then. We either needed to get some more creativity in the current system via new players, or deploy a more attack-minded system. 7 defeats on the spin surely means we can’t keep doing the same things and magically hope it turns.
 
I think with the absences we are about on par.

Only problem is, football doesn't stand still.

With Rodriguez, Everton are better
With Benrhama, West Ham will be better.
With Wilson, Newcastle are stronger.
With Eze, Palace have more guile.
With Watkins and Barkley, Villa look better.
Plus Leeds enter the season with momentum and no fear of having anything to lose.

Which leaves us looking towards West Brom, Fulham, Brighton, Burnley and Southampton to scrap it out with.

I hope West Brom and Fulham will be deadbeat teams, leaving one spot.

You have to say, unless there are big changes, Burnley had a poor window. Lost Hendrick and gained a couple of squad players. Brighton gained the injury prone Lallana but lost Mooy. Southampton have Ings which could be crucial though they did lose Hjolberg to Spurs. They got Walcott but he's looked a spent force for some time and the others they have signed I find a bit meh. But, they do have 6 points on the board.

And some of those that I've given free passes to like West Ham and Newcastle, equally capable is mucking up regardless of what money they spent.

My own take in the pandemic has always been that this season 17th is success.
 
Mcgoldrick, JOC, McBurnie, Fleck apparently...
There's no way we aren't at least filling the loan spots with the players we have injured already.
