It has often been said that a city of the size of Sheffield deserves to have two strong football teams, playing at the highest level (like Liverpool, Manchester, or Birmingham for example). As our grandfathers, or fathers told us, this is how it used to be in the ‘good old days’.

I’ve looked at the records and the seasons when this was so were: (dates refer to season ending) 1894–1899; 1901–1920; 1927–1934; 1954–1955; 1962–1968; 1992-1994.

So apart from three seasons in the 1990s, the two Sheffield clubs have not been in the top division together for more than 40 years. In my lifetime (71 years so far) it’s only happened on 12 occasions.

Let’s face it, it’s not going to happen in the foreseeable future, so should we care if Wednesday go into oblivion?

If you’re an Owl, it matters, of course. Whether we are Blades or Owls largely depends on an accident of birth, or as a child being taken along by a relative or friend to Bramall Lane or Hillsborough, so it could be any one of us slashing our wrists right now.

The rivalry between the two clubs is good for the city, some say. But is it? It may have been friendly sporting rivalry in the old days, before crowds were segregated, but it certainly isn’t now. Apart from calling each other ‘pigs’ or ‘scum’ some of the rivalry has gone well beyond the point of friendly banter – it is dangerously unpleasant.

Local derbies in recent years have not been games to look forward to. For many fans, the fear of losing has been paramount. Derbies have been games to be endured, not enjoyed – apart from a few notable exceptions.

We live in a very different world from the so-called ‘good old days’. Players are not working class heroes on a modest wage – they’re overpaid celebrities who will play for anyone who will offer them the biggest buck. Money has ruined the once-beautiful game. Many clubs are owned by foreign consortiums and some of the top teams hardly have any British players in their team. How can the ordinary fan identify with that?

So should we worry if Wednesday are in terminal decline? If they do go under, there will be others to follow no doubt. Maybe football itself is in terminal decline.

It’s time to forget the myth and face reality. And that is keeping the Blades alive and well and – hopefully – successful.

Good post. I'd disagree about the rivalry. From my experience it's very healthy and largely friendly. But make no mistake, I'd love them to go pop. Sheffield could maintain 2 premier league teams, but it would be much easier with one. Anything that is bad for them is good for us.

I'd settle for a rivalry with Sheffield's other team, Rotherham...:D

Anyone who says it wouldn't be dissapointing for another football team to go out of business is a moron.

Wether it be Sheffield United, Preston North End or Lincoln City, no 'proper' football fan should believe this.

Can I just remind people that whatever the allegiance of a forum member, we don't tolerate personal abuse.

I agree that we should try to keep football clubs in business.

But when they are run in such a way as what is happening at such clubs as Wednesday something HAS to be sorted.

It is cheating the rest of the clubs who are doing as they should.

To pay rich footballers a wage and default on council tax is quite frankly outrageous!

Good post Broomhill and one with which I totally agree with, which is not really difficult as we bith come from the same era .
You may well be right in that the only overiding factor these days is money.
Remember when despite the Blades wanting to sell Jimmy Hagan, always a selling club,to the Wednesday he refused to go.
We had some great times at the lane did we not or is my memory on the blink.
See Ronnie Simpson passed on at 76, makes life seem short.

In fairness to many on this board, it has been said repeatedly that something in football needs to give. So many clubs have taken the micky for so long that we actually need the wake up call of a famous club going under.

Of course it's awful for the fans, but I and others said Pompey deserved to go. Cardiff got very lucky. And now your lot are treating everyone with utter cynicism while crying for a sympathy vote.

Wednesday or not, I'm sick of it.

On the footballing side I want Sheffield Wednesday to do badly. On the business side, I want Sheffield Wednesday to do badly. Recently, both of these aspects have left me very happy. At what point do I stop being a "proper" football fan because I want them to cease to do REALLY badly? If they're doing REALLY, REALLY badly they'll go out of business, and that's not my fault for wanting it or the Owls fans for not wanting success hard enough.

Sure, I feel bad for the fans, but you know what? It's only a game. It's only a football team. They'll get over it. It's not like an actual family member has died. Anyone comparing the two.... THEY are the moron. So yeah, fuck 'em. Let them go through liquidation.

Good call Foxy.

However, although I don't necessarily disagree with dj. I have a loathing right now of what they have tried to do and what they are still doing.

eg. They have a player on loan (Mellor) who is not cheap. Preston wanted him off the books because he's a high earner at the club, Wednesday signed him on loan on full wages. There's also the signing on fee. After all this he still hasn't been sent back during the financial problems. He then scores a hat-trick the other day. Rochdale's Manager comes out with his comment that the Pigs are furious about, but he's right.

8 permanent signings last summer, mostly NPC players on that money, whilst playing in L1.

On top of that the £600K/month they can't meet. The £300K Vat Bill, The 80K Council Tax bill also.

I'm sorry. Unless the laws have changed in this country where you can put off paying Income Tax, Council Tax, VAT and Domestic bill's and still continue to spend without reprise then there's something seriously wrong with A) this Decision and B) the justice system.

Wendy should have been wound up today and after the interview on RS and Text I had this afternoon it seems Football is not just corrupt from the highest level, but also political.

I've predicted this a couple of times and will again:

The PL are picking and choosing their teams. oncethey have their 22 they want. They will grant the 2 Scottish clubs access to the PL and then will shut up shop and disappear into a European Football League. The top English league then will be the Championship (aptly named) where 1 maybe 2 will play off with the top 2 of Scotland for access to the 1 spot in the Euro super league. It's coming, even Ref performances are displaying this now.

Never mind eh?

In the main, I agree with this. But my love of United / hatred of Wednesday engulfs this. First and foremost I want what's best for us. And if that involves us mopping up support from Parson Cross and South Barnsley's finest, then so be it.

So here's to your non existence....:D

Sorry to say I'm in the 'let them burn' camp on this one too. Businesses go bust every day with far fewer problems, and no-one cares. Why some 'special case' ruling should be brought into play, I dont know. Insolvent is insolvent. Im less interested in 143 years of history, and more interested in the businesses that have delivered services in good faith when there has been little chance of them getting paid for them, and also which schools and hospitals have £1.4m less to spend because its been pissed up the wall on Clinton Morrison and Neil Mellor.

It makes it easier that for all my adult life, we've had boasting and lauding it over how wonderful and massive they are, (mostly from people who haven't been to a game since 1994). All the crap from Strafford stoking the fire on our own debts, the WC bid, the stream of piss taking investors that were going to catapult them to the PL again. Crash and burn, baby, crash and burn. Its called Karma.

The research in the OP is excellent and puts a new slant on things for me. The whole Sheffield football thing that Len bangs on about is a falacy. Heres to Sheffield United and a future as a one club city...

In regards to us being run as we are, i completely agree.

My exact thought today was if that judge gives us any more time he's a bigger moron than the people who have been running this club. We deserve to be where we are now (not the fans, but the club as a whole). We have had this coming for 10+ years, what difference is 28 days going to make.

While ever the likes of Grierson, Addy and Hully are in charge, we are screwed. The sooner these are gone the better.

It wasn't meant as a post earlier on to rile you guys up, nor to stir or cause hassle for Foxy n Linz, but it's just so frustrating. To be run like we are after spending so much money on them and feeling for them.

I love the rivalry between us, some of you will know it (i've even met a few of you when going to the local for you for a United Match, and i've even had a drink bought for me by Silverfox :D)

Anyway, hope we get through it, i'm sure we will. Someone will sort us out and one day we'll be decent again. I've said it before and i'll say it again, i would love nothing more than Wednesday and United to be in the Premiership.

RIP SWFC.

ps - any reason why i'm still banned foxy and linz from 99% of the forum :D

We had someone reporting stuff that happened in the non-public areas to that James fella who had a lot to do with Strafford.

He kept emailing us whinging that we can't report on certain aspects of Sheffield Wednesday. As such, all known Wednesday fans were put in special measures... i.e. they could only see certain parts of the forum.

I shall amend that now DJ.

I still don't understand why your club still exists though!

Does this mean DJ is out of Administration?

I hope he lost 10 posts at least.

:D

Just out of curiosity linz, are you able to divulge details of what they asked you not to report on?

don't shoot .. let 'em burn! (saving private ryan).. at some point.. one of the league clubs 'will' go under.. it is a no brainer.. the FA knows this and is attempting to prevent a domino effect that will happen once a precedent has been set..

Many thanks for what will be no doubt an amusing read.

Oh, be in no doubts that when mischief presents itself, we will be there ;)

In fact, I'm rather upset that I've not had a wholly unfounded and unreasonable email from Sheffield Wednesday for quite a matter of months...

Btw... if anyone needs the P&T password, PM me within the next 5 minutes or it will have to wait until tomorrow.

It's now 7 months since we've managed to upset SWFC as a site collective. On behalf of both Foxy and myself, allow me to apologise for neglecting our duties and remind any whistle-blowers that our email address is [email protected]

What sort of self respecting Sheffield United message board allows Sheffield Wednesday fans on ? None of this "respecting difference" rubbish, that's just a bourgeois fetish.

Well I for one quite enjoy Peter Ndlovu 081s posts....
