We all know that's McGoldrick's best position is just behind the front two as the link man. Play McGoldrick as a no 10 behind Brewster and/or Burke/McBurnie. Norwood and Berge behind him and the 5 man defence with Stevens LCB and/or Osborn/Lowe and either Baldock or Bogle on the flanks. Might be worth a try. It's usually Didzy's role when he comes off the bench.

Agree in principal that i would like to see us go with a 10 again but with Berge & Ampadu as holding midfielders.......although having said that I wouldn't be surprised to see Ampadu take Bash's position before long, he looks a shadow of his former self at the moment....

I don't think that is his best position. We've barely seen him play it.

That aside, we're losing the midfield battle every game at the moment. The answer can't be to lose another body in there.

I think Didsy would probably drift back into midfield anyway regardless of being told to be the number 10.

Which might not be a bad thing when needed

He said in his post match interview that it's not possible against a lot of PL opposition, whether that's his view or the managers is not clear.

Which I think is absolutely correct. Going into games with a 2 man midfield would be suicide. We already struggle for possession as it is.

I do love a post that starts with "We all know that..."

We ought to try it at least (obviously opposition dependant).

We are not winning games at the moment. So if we don't try something new or a couple of tweaks to try and improve our creativity/attacking intent then we won't win enough games, and if we don't win enough games how can we expect to stay in the division?

Yes its still early doors but in my opinion the majority of the mid table teams have improved their first teams a little bit more than what we have. So those of you that aren't particularly concerned yet; OK fair enough but at the same time do not underestimate the Premier League.

Virtually every other team in the PL plays with a no10. Villa played with two against Liverpool; that didnt turn out too bad.

But for some reason, it’s not possible for us??? I don’t get it...🤷‍♂️

Villa's formation against Liverpool looked like 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1. Watkins was the lone central striker, supported by Barkley. Grealish and Trezeguet were wide men.

"He's our striker, he's our number 10,
Missing goals in the pink and green,
Came in on a Bosman free,
And he goes by the name of Did-zee'

How did I do?

He is a number 10 in the traditional sense, a 2nd striker a la Cantina, Sheringham. Holds the ball up, drops off links up play, but still gets into the necessary goals scoring positions. Just he usually misses them. Still 2 in 4 starts this season , Didzy upfront is one of our few answers, rather than problems this season. He is a good premier league player, just not good enough to influence every game.

Which I think is absolutely correct. Going into games with a 2 man midfield would be suicide. We already struggle for possession as it is.

In the promotion season we managed to make our formation look like 3-5-2 with the wing backs being "midfielders" as much as "defenders", often helping the central midfielders with closing down, pressing etc. At times Duffy dropped deeper, alongside the two central midfielders, again making it a 5 across midfield. We were so good that opposition teams focused more on how to stop us, than how to cause us problems.

What's happened now is that our wing backs are being forced deeper to deal with opposition wide men, who cannot be left alone with our wide centre backs. We're finding it hard to keep possession and have to do a lot of defending.

When the opposition switch play our three central midfielders have to work hard to push across and to keep behind the ball with correct/optimal distances between themselves, and our defenders. We're just about getting by at the moment, and we've selected our fittest midfielders to cope.

So at the moment I think it seems necessary to do all these defensive tweaks and yes it does seem suicidal to have two strikers AND a number 10 behind them. Although McGoldrick is working hard he can't cover as much space as our midfield trio is doing. I agree that we will effectively be left with two midfielders (note that we'we gone from 5 to 2) in a lot of situations.

I think Wilder had the tough October fixtures in mind when choosing the current tactics. Fulham may be a bit different, but the plan has been to stay in these games, take our chances and get something while achieving defensive solidity, which will be absolute key to us. We've not had much luck so far though.

I wonder if we could go 3-4-2-1...
Three centre backs, protected by two wingbacks and two central midfielders (Ampadu and Berge would be my choice) and then have two no10s, (Didzy and Oli Burke) with BrewDog up front.
Would that work? I’d love to see us try it...

Maybe it's just me but I always felt Didsy helped us win the midfield scraps in the past. He puts a foot in and works as hard as anyone in there.

Most other teams also play with a back 4 but , apparently , that’s also beyond our capabilities but I don’t believe that either is the case .

If it was so , how come when we are chasing games we use both and always look much the better for it , as at Arsenal on Sunday to name but one ?

Seems to be an obsession that we have to play the same system as our players can’t play any other.
overlapping centre backs are a thing of the past, got to adapt and evolve as a team

I'd just like to see us approach the game like we used to before Christmas, on the floor, players seemingly everywhere causing havoc, passing the ball in the corner and keeping possession wether we win or not, and having more than 30% possession, not asking for to much, am I?
