Robinson tackle

Has anyone moaning about Dyche actually watched his interview?

“I said to Chris and Knilly on the side, back in our day that’s a standard challenge and unfortunate outcome. Nowadays it’s a red. At the time I thought it was bad but no red. Then I saw it at half time, it’s a red."

He then gets a very leading question about whether it was "necessary", and while it says yeah probably unnecessary he then says "I don’t want to harp on about their players. They’re a good side, competitive, no problem with that. But on this occasion, it's a red. In modern football, it’s a red. But I’ll make clear a number of years ago, you’d probably say “yeah OK, bit over-zealous”"

Probably couldn't get more balanced.

Whether he intended to or not is irrelevant. It was a reckless, high challenge that most refs would give a red for and understandably so. Winning the ball doesn’t matter at all with reckless tackles like that.

The ball is on the floor when he wins it. His foot only becomes ‘high’ in the follow through, as per every time a player kicks a ball.

Hi foot has high in the follow through because of the force of the challenge.

That’s why they bought the rule in, to stop players injuring opponents with the follow through

Sean Dyche talking about it, reckons it was a red. His players not happy with the tackle. Will the next game against Burnley turn into a grudge match?

who gives fuck now whether it’s a red card or not he got away with it. I don’t give a toss what Dyche thinks

His foot his high because that’s what happens when you kick a ball.

If their player hadn’t backed out of the tackle they’d have kicked the ball at the same time, there wouldn’t have been a follow through and there (most likely) wouldn’t have been an injury. There also wouldn’t be a discussion about it.

Robinson has fully intended to go in hard because that’s how pro’s tackle (see O’Connell and Fleck in particular), there’s no way he’s intended to injure the player.

Intent has nothing to do with it though.

Your foot only goes high if it’s out of control. Not every tackle ends up with your studs 2 foot in the air at all.

seems you’re mistaking tackling and kicking

He kicked the ball. I suggest you watch it again.

Some are seeing this through very red and white tinted glasses it seems

Intent or not, clear red, he follows through with both feet off the floor, studs raised and incredibly high boot, sort of challenge that can end a lads career ffs

It was reckless and uncontrolled

I vaguely recall an incident at the last women’s World Cup where Spain were awarded a penalty after one of their players ran into the upswing of a clearance. Utter nonsense.

Contact from the action of cleanly kicking the ball unchallenged is not the same as a two-footed lunge as some seem to think. It’s not a challenge, it’s a clearance.

Hopefully the injury won’t be as bad as first appears and he makes a quick recovery.

The point is, he was out of control. If he just cleared it and stayed on his feet there wouldn’t or shouldn’t be an issue

It wasn’t even a tackle. It was a clearance. The other bloke was never getting there and was careless in his attempt. Very unfortunate conclusion and I wish him a speedy recovery.

I assume their players trying to leave one on Sander was them getting their own back for this tackle.

I thought it was a great tackle!?, the thing that upset Dyche, was when Robinson shouted, "Av that ya claret wearing numpty cunt!", as he went through that soft claret wearing numpty cunt.
Good work Robbo!

That's rubbish, he played the ball which is his right, and the follow through caught their player, it was high but i couldn't see how he could have controlled his leg on a follow through within a legitimate tackle, it's always going to be a difficult decision when these happen, some will get a yellow for the "high leg" some will get sent off for a rash tackle, it's football.

Works both ways.

In Graves park Sunday morning Robinson would have been called nesh for that tackle.

Probably an unpopular view here but if you don’t think Jack Robinson knew exactly what he was doing in that tackle you’re either being wilfully ignorant or you’ve never played football before, IMO. Deserved a red for how high he connected on his leg. If that had been on our player and he then had to be stretchered off we’d be fuming.

I’ve played football before but whether he knows what he’s doing or not, he’s played the ball when the other player doesn’t have it. It’s not a red card. It’s the other player’s responsibility to get out of the way. Not a red.

and yes if it was our player we’d be fuming!

You have a point about strong tackles being part of the game, but don't call the kid a prick for getting injured in a tackle, it didn't serve him right.

Agreed. Serious injuries are a horrible part of the game and I’d never wish it on anyone. Failure I can wish on a footballer, but not the end of something they’ve given their whole lives for.

It's a difficult one, I can see both sides of the argument. In instances like this, it's purely down to whether the ref thinks it was reckless and uncontrolled, or whether it was simply an unfortunate collision from a naturally trailing leg after successfully clearing the ball.

There's no way that Wilder would be in favour of a ruling which said that contact made with an opposition player after passionately winning a tackle should be judged in and of itself instead of as part of the tackle as a whole.

It's not often this is the case but refs could either wave play on or give a straight red for that one and neither would be a clear and obvious error.

This is the most obvious recent comparison that I can recall involving United. The general consensus on this forum following that Sordell challenge was that it was an unfortunate accident without intent and I agree with that, note that Sordell was high and got nowhere near the ball and Coutts caught his foot on the follow through. If we can give Sordell the benefit of the doubt then the same should apply to Robinson, no intent other than to win the ball. It looks so much worse than it was due to the strange position Gudmundsson got himself into.

He wanted to smash him. He knew it was a free shot. His momentum looked a bit unnatural. I don't think he intended to injure, but wanted to "leave one on him" in the old fashioned sense. Red card for me if VAR had been there.

I wouldn't want to discourage our players too much from going in hard like that. But not recklessly.

Was he just strong in the tackle?

Weak tackles can cause damage to yourself.

Only he will know what his intention was

Thats gone .... shall we talk about Villa ghost goal ... NO .... move on!
