Just happened to switch over the tv on Tuesday night to see Kyel Reid cross a peach of the ball for the Charlton striker to convert with less than 2 minutes left v MK Dons in the JP Trophy.
The commentators both said that he'd been doing that all night and was such an exciting prospect.
Is this the same Kyel Reid that we let go after signing an d never giving him a chance?
I saw more talent in that move that half A DOZEN MATCHES DOWN AT THE LANE! :(

MK Dons - JP Trophy...

Wow, I have just shit myself with excitement at the thought of this prospect.

Yep its the exact same Kyel Reid that wasn't able to settle in Sheffield. I remember at the time he went on loan to Charlton, he'd been having family troubles back in London - Hence the move back to London.

Its a pity, but I think circumstances meant that it just didn't work out for him or us.

Whilst the match wasn't exactly Champions League the skill was there to see by all!!
And, like it or not it's Leagues One and Two we will be looking to recruit from - and why not we've had enough dross from the Premier League
I see that Davies signed on loan for Wallsall yesterday as he was not in Stoke's 25 - and we paid a fortune in loan fees for him last season!

Perhaps it may have helped if we had given him a chance to play more regularly - Cheds had enough chances!

I don't know the ins and outs Fiery, but I think it sounded like he had the problems even before he came up North, perhaps you're right, but theres no point to finger pointing on this one. I think it was doomed from the start.

Perhaps others on here who are closer to the club would be able to fill in the gaps

!

So he is playing at the same level as Reid.... are you saying we should have retained the services of Davies too then?

The grass is always greener. especially at Swillsborough. Or even In North Anston?

Couldn't settle in Sheffield? It’s 2hrs 4mins on the train. Millions of people commute that time to work every day. It's not like he was stuck on a rock in the middle of the Irish Sea.

Is he still on loan down there, or did we release him?

But Robbie, we paid a fortune for the services of Davies for a few matches (initial fee £250k + wages I have heard) whereas Reid was on a free

Didn't know Reid played at North Anston Boo- which side Little mester or Dinnington Town Ladies?

Dont start about the position of the border between Dinno and Anston. Despite Anston parish councils newsletter stating that the big rock on Nursery road is in the right place it is not.
It should be over 100mtr back down the park.
Dont think Kyle Reids boots would cope with either by the way

While that may be true, I was asking if you believe we should have retained Davies?

Sorry am i missing something? Andrew Davies? garbage simple as. Kyel Reid wasn't doing it like Billy Sharp so we got rid he was free so not lost out.

I think the point generally being made is that Kyel Reid wasnt given much of a chance.....and he wasnt. He also had trouble settling apparently. A bit of a soft excuse IMO but if the lad didnt like it up north then thats his preference so not much can be done about that.

Yes we lost nothing.....apart from a season's wages!

We've had players before who've had problems off the pitch, family troubles etc, but if they're in the team every week they will sort it out eventually - most often. If they're hanging around doing nothing they may start thinking they may just as well leave.

Blackwell didn't like out and out wingers, plain and simple, he wanted his widemen to be hard working and track back. I think Kyel Reid was the best out and out left winger at the club (well, he was the only one), and I would have tried to make it work.

Thats lack of professionalism though Bergen. If you're determined enough you will work at it until you do get in the team and your efforts on a daily basis should take your mind off personal things. Whether they're getting in the team or not its their job and they should get on with it and leave personal matters at home.

I moved down south for work a two or three years ago (have come back since) and it took me a while to reach the position I wanted. I was quite homesick for the first 18 months but I left it at home and didnt bring that attitude to work with me. I got on with my job.....and Kyel Reid will have been paid a lot more than I was at the time I would imagine.

I know what you're saying but reasons like that dont wash with me. Anyone would think he had moved to a foreign country!

Maybe his 'family problems' were rather more serious than just feeling homesick.

That's the impression I got at the time, though I don't have any facts to go on.

A Quick google of this I found:

Ellis said: "Of course he still has a chance. He has to show the level of consistency and the attitude to playing the game we require to force himself in.

"Kyel is a southern lad adapting to life up north and things have not been easy for him. He has had one or two family traumas to deal with and so we're taking things nice and steady with him."

Ellis added: "It's fair to say that we did probably expect a bit more from him by this stage, but there is still plenty of time for him to make an impression."

They have put an Anston 'rock' in Kiveton in view of Kiveton Park Station and the Station Hotel.

P.s. anyone remember a certain Mr.Cotterill? maybe im in a minority, but i would love tro see him in this team with this formation. But then again, he was a lot of people's scape goat, and its probably his fault that we havent signed him again.

This may have something to do with the games he was given he was awful?

A bit unfair to say that when he probably didnt play for us in as many as half a dozen games. I would be surprised if he had started as many as two! The only thing I remember him for was winning a flick on at Ashton Gate for Henderson's winner.

I cant understand how he can be judged as awful when we barely saw him play.

Reid played 7 league games for us, all as a sub. Excluding injury time, he was on the field for a grand total of 80 minutes, with his longest spell being 29 minutes.

He also played a full game in the league cup defeat to Port Vale.

The only thing I remember him for was winning a flick on at Ashton Gate for Henderson's winner.

His last touch in a Blades shirt. Blackwell never picked him again.

Typified Blackwell - whenever I saw Reid I saw some promise, potential and somebody who could change a match Yes he was raw but I believe he will come good !

I honestly didnt see enough of him to make a judgment but would have liked to have seen him given a chance. I didnt get to many away games last season so only saw him briefly at home a couple of times. Heard some positive things from other people but again the info was limited because no one had seen him for any extended run of games. I'm not sure why Blackwell signed him at all. Totally pointless exercise and a waste of a salary.....I'm referring to Kyel Reid in this instance

Maybe so, but another way of looking at it would be his time at Charlton. If he really is as good as some people on here seem to think he is then surely someone in a better position than Charlton would be willing to take a punt on him? In the games I saw him he was head down and run, fell over the ball a few times and his balls in were about as useful as a Kozluk shot. The kids get excited when they see a player running with the ball, doesn't make them a world beater. In my opinion (so not necessarily fact) he was of the same style as Paul Devlin but only about 45% as good.

I still think you've been too quick to judge. He's a young player and one that has never played a decent spell of regular football prior to going to Charlton. I dont think anyone on here is necessarily suggesting he is a world beater but the general opinion is that he wasnt given opportunity to show his potential.....which based on his Charlton performances he clearly has something.

Most players and particularly young ones need time to get used to playing in a team before you see the best of them. With all due respect I think you're doing to typical football fan thing where a player is judged to be crap after seeing two mediocre performances. You cant expect a new player to come in and necessarily just fit like a glove straight away. It takes time and as he was playing in a side that had no intention of playing decent football he was never going to settle in quickly.

I cant see the comparison to Paul Devlin. Nothing like him IMO. Dev was essentially an out and out winger (i.e. wide forward). Kyel Reid is far more a wide midfield player. He is nowhere near as direct and aggressive as Devlin either.
