Like it or lump it we have a budget, both in terms of fees and wages. We can't just magically double that because 'Gav from Eccy Road' says we are gonna go down. (made up name and location tbf)

We'll also have a view of where we want to strengthen as well as numerous targets for each position.

RWB is an obvious area to strengthen, but probably not first priority as Baldock is a very strong member of the first 11. GK was the priority and lo and behold we've signed one!

Other teams inevitably have bigger budgets and at present it looks like Villa have "beaten" us to Cash as they are simply prepared to pay more.

Fact of the matter is we've got to be smarter and better in recruitment to improve. Every team is after younger highly rated prospects from the Championship. And unfortunately the opportunity to play for Wilder isn't worth sacrificing 20k a week for a player, nor millions on a fee for a club because we've finished higher than Villa.

Have patience, whoever we'll sign, come the end of the window, we'll be a stronger squad than the end of last season.

As it stands the squad is weaker than it was at the end of last season with pre-season well under way. I completely understand fans being a bit frustrated. Being mostly an unused sub it's a great but if business if we got a loan fee plus his wages paid for the season.

If they don't happen, then clearly things haven't gone to plan. But I'd wager that there will be a new player or two arriving next week. Now we have to sign another player to replace freeman, we wont find a player as good as luke freeman who can play as LCM and also play as an attacking mid


If we were getting 4/5 Million then fair enough but a loan for a season is daft makes no sense at all

If Wilder didn't have the backing he wants I'm pretty sure we'd know about it. He's not backwards at coming forwards is he?!

For that reason I'm not panicked at all by the current situation, we know the club sign players responsibly and won't pay over the odds and Wilder will get players in that will provide good back up. I think keeping our core squad together and adding some competition up front is a real benefit to us. Berge is coming into his own after bedding in as is Osborne.

There is no need to panic.

I do tend to agree. We are in this wonderful position due to fantastic football management and yet the owner management doesn’t seam to be on the same level (again!) or putting in the same level of commitment (again!)

Doherty signed a long term deal actually. I had to look it up a few days ago as was something very weird about his low transfer fee.

Doherty's agent is also Mourinho's agent AND Wolves personal super agent. Nothing dodgy though, I'm sure...

All these players we've been beaten to or can't get - Watkins, Swift, Cantwell, Buendia, Dennis, Cash, Nunez, Loren, Jota etc.... where have they actually gone? They're all exactly where they started.
Robinson went where the ridiculous money was (wouldn't we all) to be back up, Eze went back to where he started, everyone else is still up for grabs. What exactly are we looking for? We needed a keeper we got one. Competition at wing-back or backup? A starter will cost and backup shouldn't be more than £5m + add ons. We already have backup down the left + RND. If Baldock is going to be our regular buy potential that could step up, Djed Spence at Boro or Nyambe at Blackburn.
Berge is bedding in at RCM, we still have Lunny. This is where IMO we need to spend but also look at the loan market here or abroad then buy in next window, same for a striker.
Burke maybe on his way and Brewster has been mentioned it's hardly panic time yet

Our model is to low ball on wages and bring in assets for sizeable fees. We simply can't afford to complete on wages and have anything like a competitive transfer budget. Burnley have done it the other way round and, to their credit, have made it work.
If we want to spend a similar amount of money as Burnley and Bournemouth on wages, and have a similar budget to last year, what we really want is the Prince out and a sugar daddy (ala Denim) in. If the choice is the Burnley or SUFC 19/20 approach, my vote is for maintaining last year's approach.
This approach is frustrating as we will often get blown out over wages and have to be really canny re where we acquire new signings. Berge is a great example of this approach being successful, as are the signings of Ramsdale and Moose. All three signed before they have signed major PL or even Championship level deals.
