If they’re not going to be pushing for starts and let’s face it, neither Jags or Jack are good enough for the first team. Why the hell have we given them a new contract? We should be signing players who’ll push and force our starting 11 to up their game. I have a feeling as these two have now signed new deals, we’ll not see anymore defenders.

I hope I’m wrong but have a horrible feeling the signings are a case of “they’ll do”..

CW has stated we do not have a big budget. Jags will be around mainly for his experience, Rodwell will just be cover. We need a pool of 25 players. These contracts does not mean no more new faces. Its that CW priorities are elsewhere.

We will see a right back, as we have to sign one we have no cover. No more centre backs though.

Who? Who do you sign of the quality to dislodge a member of one of the best defences in the league without spending a fortune in positions where you wouldn't want rotation?

Fwiw I still think we'll see another CB come in, either a loan or a youngster.

I’m wondering whether we might see Norrington hang around for a season in and around the first team.
And while Rodwell won’t hit the headlines for us we need to remember that clubs have paid big money for him so there’s a player there somewhere.
So who’s to say he won’t be able to slot in if and when required and prove more than adequate?

It’s a fair point others have raised, our back 5 outperformed many others last season defensively. To improve on that with players able to slot straight in may well cost huge amounts. So we need to be a slowly evolving and changing unit, with a change at a time as needed. Age would suggest that might be Bash. Then Stevens. Then Egan. Then Baldock. If that goes to plan there’s 5 years there in the top flight, by which time who knows the type of player we may be looking at.

Season start isn’t far away, and we now have a team to start the season. I still feel we are light up front, with Billy being less impactive, Mousset likely not fit for three months and Didsy not really a goal scorer. Means we have McB and Therefore probably only one plan.
So for me I’m hoping that ALL attention is on the front line now. We need at least one, preferably two ASAP, and then once they are in we can look at tweaking the rest of the squad in the scramble near the back end of the window. (When the likes of Swift/Cash May finally be let go)

In fairness he broke the Antonee Robinson story first.
but Yank suggested this over a week before Nixon 'broke' the story and (as I do) I looked up Robinson's last season's montage and he got my seal of approval, I can't remember when I've last said 'we need to sign this player'* but I did about Robinson and wouldn't have batted an eyelid if he'd been in the 5-10m range. That was how easy a call that one was.
*Examples:
Swift - actually does get my vote but he needs work, holds on to the ball way too long.
Cash - too much
Cakir - that's too much money for us
Ramsdale - that's too much money for Ramsdale (obv we aren't paying 18.5m)
Berge - nothing to say really just relying on everybody else's excitement
McBurnie -too much
Jagielka - as long as his wages are low
Maupay - if he doesn't want to come fuck him
Robinson - half season wonder
Freeman - can't see why everybody raves about him, he's ok.
Mousset - who? And how could we have effectively scouted this guy he hasn't played in ages.

Of course once they are signed I'm right behind them.

Adequate cover. Won’t be pushing for starts between them. Nowt wrong having with either in the squad.

What we do need is some competition for places.
The thing is Wilder has always said about making the squad overall stronger.

Apart from the unlikely signing of Dennis, i can't really see us being linked to anyone who does this.

Everyone else seems to fit into the 'cheap gamble' or 'one for the future' category.

Cash and Swift 'possible' exceptions but can we definitely say they will make us any stronger than say L. Freeman who overall impressed in his limited game time.

Seeing as Cash, Swift and L Freeman play 3 different positions yes they probably could improve the squad.

We weren't going to buy new starting centre backs, because JOC, Egan and Bash have been amazing and will start whenever possible.

So we'd only spend money on a prospect CB. If there's one available at a decent price.

Currently we have the same backup CBs as last season... There's no major problem with that!

To be fair to Rodwell, by the way, if he's learnt our system and been given a new contract... Who's to say he isn't good enough to get into our team more regularly? Ten years ago he was one of the hottest prospects in English football. Until Man City spent millions on him and never played him.

We finished 9th with the current squad, i guess there is also argument that we don't need to strengthen if we're happy to consolidate again next season.

Wilder always takes about driving and pushing on and how we can’t stand still. He’s absolutely right and I think that’s what fans want to see as well. Fans are just a bit less patient because they can’t actually see what’s happening. We can tell people to “relax” but we’re all human, we’ve all encountered people who need to know everything that’s going on even if you’ve got it under control. If they knew what was going on, which for obvious reasons they don’t, they’d be quiet. I actually think the areas where Wilder seemingly wants to strengthen - new starting striker, new starting RCM, cover/competition for RWB, cover/competition for CB/RCB (thats the only one not confirmed, and bringing Jags and Rodwell back suggests it’s maybe lower down the list of priorities if at all now) - are bang on. Trouble is it’s a difficult market with a tight turnaround on the off-season. But I’m still hopeful.

Am I reading too much into Billy’s repeated comment that being together in Scotland gives “the new boys” time to settle in.
If we only have two keepers and one knows the set up well, are there others up there we haven’t spotted ?

Jags and Rodwell getting reacquainted with the squad after a whole month away is worth the Scotland trip in itself. They’d begun to forget what McBurnie’s face looked like.

A lot of youth players seem to have travelled, I would imagine that is what he is referring to.
