If we don’t have the money to spend on the squad and we need to spend the money on first team contenders like rammers/rambo then so be it. I would rather we had the extra money on a new striker than buying some one for 6 mill to take jags place on bench when jags and rodders will do.

It's fascinating how many of us fill in a non existent gap at the end of the statement with "and this concludes SUFCs recruitment for this season"

The most worrying element of this is the fact we clearly don't have that much money. I'm pretty sure that Chris, if he could, would want to be bringing in more younger players into the squad and develop them. That costs money/takes time. The fact we'll start next season needing to replace Jags and Rodwell, is just postponing a headache for a later date.

For all I know Rodwell might be good enough, but the fact our manager was extremely reluctant to play him at the end of last season would suggest not.

To be fair, I needed a timely reminder that as Blades we can feel one spot of rain and think that the sky is falling in.

So you want players who are clearly not up to it rather than players that might be?

Got it

I don't think Jagielka, or Rodwell are up to playing 5, or 6 consecutive games at PL level. Based on their career trajectories over the last 2/3 seasons.

Guys like Stearman, Cranie (but not necessarily them per se) I think would be able to do a job akin to Jack Robinson if required.
Where, yes, there would be a notable drop off in quality - but they can function in the system and other players can cover a bit for them a bit if needs be.

What are you basing that Stearman and Cranie could off

I understand the point in having squad depth but for whats the point when they cant push who is already there.

Experienced duo remain at the Lane - News - Sheffield United

Good news imo. Its a squad game. And neither will be on mega bucks.

Jags is great to have around the place for his experience and knowledge that he can pass on to others. CW obviously appreciates what both can bring to the table.

I'm not specifically suggesting we sign Cranie, or Stearman. They just felt like good examples given the role they performed for us in the Championship.

But solid Championship performers like Jack Robinson - for me, are much better cover than Jagielka & Rodwell, on the basis that they have recent experience of playing consecutive 90 minute games at a decent level... sure, there'd be a drop off in quality (which we saw with J Robinson), but in a back 5 like ours you can probably afford to carry one player slightly below par quality wise.

Much harder to carry a player that isn't fit enough. Impossible to carry someone that simply can't get on pitch.

Stearman absolutely no chance. Cranie maybe I would’ve kept last season, but not after his cruiciate injury for Luton.

Rodwell and Jags have a much higher pedigree and are better players.

Pedigree of course. They've played at a higher level, commanded decent salaries, transfer fees etc..

But what evidence is there to suggest that either can come in and play half a dozen 90 minute games if required?

Jags I actually thought was quite poor last season when he did play & Rodwell has barely played football in about 3 seasons... give me a couple of Jack Robinson types at around the £500k-2m mark every day of the week.

But doesn't CW know what he's doing? We don't see these guys in training. Both England internationals by the way.

we only have a squad of 25. It's not just a case of being able to keep signing players. This is my concern. If we could have bigger squads I wouldn't have as many misgivings. As it stands, we can sign another 4-7 players, depending on whether we want or can move others on. 3 to 4 of those will likely be loans, given reduced budgets.

Rodwell played half a season in the championship in 2018-9 for Blackburn, and did pretty well.

he’s made some bad choices in recent years but he may have his uses, and potentially a lot of upside. it could be a good move.

It's a bit boring to shutdown every discussion with the old "in Wilder we trust" adage. Sure, Wilder's been incredible for us. We've had 4 great seasons.
But does he make the odd recruitment mistake? Yes.
I'm just speculating as to whether we could have done better than Rodwell & Jagielka. I'm not sure their pedigree, or former status as England internationals has much relevance to the here & now.
Its been a long time since either player has been held in that sort of regard & it will never happen again. They're players on the down, not up.

Maybe a bit boring. Maybe pretty valid!

I'd say because they're ideal backups, familiar with being our backups.

This probably means we're spending/focusing transfer money on other positions.

Though i wouldn't be surprised if we still signed a young/versatile CB to cover Egan and Bash.

Stop talking sense.

Dont you realise that we have unlimited amounts of funds to bring in half a new squad of PL standard players, all in this window....

Bit of an odd signing for people to lose their shit over.

I mean who else are we going to sign that's going to be happy to sit on the bench but has enough experience and talent to slot in when needed?

I don't get all the moaning Jags will only be used as a late substitute. Both Jags and Rodwell have played a huge part of their careers at the top level, Ok Rodwell hasn't played much over the last few years but Blackburn offered him a contract before he came to us. He obviously thinks this is the level he should be playing at and any fitness issues should be over so up to him to force his way into the team. At 29 there is a few years left in Rodwell unlike Jags. I don't see the problem with a years contract.

Based on the current squad size and on current transfer activity I think it makes sense. He is cover for Basham and while we didn't see much of him last season we didn't see or hear of any major negatives.
If we get Swift and Cash plus another option up front then I think we will be in a better position than last year

I can't see Rodwell getting in our midfield.
So he must be RCB/CB cover , like Jags.

This is very disappointing IF it means that we will not sign any RCB/CB who represents future improvement in the squad.

Neither Bash nor Egan are under pressure for their place and if either get injured , can Rodwell or Jags really provide equivalent cover ?

Seems to me that the RWB , striker & midfield targets are more expensive than we'd hoped , so we can't afford a fee for RCB/CB.

I’m not troubled by this - although it seems likely that this wasn’t CW’s plan A, otherwise these contracts would have been agreed a while back.

As people have mentioned would be good to get at least one CB in who is genuine competition somewhere across the back 3 - but still a lot of time left before the window shuts.

I guess you have to look at the window in the whole don't you. Jags is clearly someone that Wilder wants in the matchday squad even if he isn't going to rack up loads of minutes. The fact that after seeing 6 months of Rodwell, Wilder has now offered him another year should give us confidence that Wilder sees something he likes there. At 29, Rodwell is far from past it and has more premier league experience than nearly everyone else in the squad.
