Do you think signing a new striker should be a priority?

  • Of course it is, you sexy idiot

  • No - other areas take priority

So that’s 1 chance missed and 2 goals?

Yeah he’s missed loads of chances
Nope 2 missed and 1 goal which was extremely lucky and that is just off the top of my head.
(? You can't count Sharp's goal for McBurnie, it wasn't even an assist!)

I just wish people stopped saying 'we need x in the PL', we don't, we stayed up with what we have comfortably.

We'll bring in at least one striker to replace Robinson or Mousset (if they go) but we need a keeper and some cover in other positions (RCB, RWB, RCM).

You can't just choose to buy reliable 10-15 goal forwards, it's not and has never been that easy.

It ended up in a goal

So you've listed 3 'missed chances' 2 of which resulted in a goal anyway?

You aren't looking at this constructively, you're only defending McBurnie's low key season, so who are you his dad, one of his mates?

Why's it a low key season?

Neither, I just hate seeing people spout bollocks

So what chances has he missed barring that 1 against Liverpool?
And out of interest, were you expecting him to score every chance he got?

As much as I would love Mousset to make it here I think his days are numbered. He just doesn't fit in with the hard working mentality and I think Wilder has had enough.

McBurnie for me grew into the season and can only get better.

If Didzy converted his chances last season we could have had a fair few more points, Southampton home, Wolves away spring to mind.
Sharp is useful to have around but can't see him being a regularly starter.

I think we will definitely in the market for a new striker and will be reserving the majority of our funds for one.

I think it's reasonable to think he might've got another goal or two from the chances he had but 6 is actually a decent return for the money we spent and our style of play. I think he'll get double figures next season.

But the lad was our main striker pretty much and his xG (according to Understat) was about 8. Didzy's was about 9. Stats aren't everything, but that tells us that we just didn't create many great chances for these guys. True, there are top level strikers who will create stuff on their own, but for me it's hard to judge our forwards too harshly because we simply haven't seen what they can do in a team that creates many opportunities for them.

Bert enjoys watching McGoldrick play, he's very stylish and skilful but if you play as one of our two front men you need to score more goals than 2 from 28 appearances. It's that simple.

Which begs the question should he be playing as one of our front two and in my view , the answer is no .

I believe he would be far more effective playing just behind , which is his natural inclination anyway . "But we don't play that way now , we play a flat 3 in midfield " I hear you say . And more's the pity say I .

Whilst I fully understand this approach against the very best and most dangerous teams , I don't see why it is necessary against much poorer ones , especially at home .

We must have been the only team in the Prem who started every match with exactly the same formation irrespective of the strengths or weaknesses of the opposition and , when we have tried to change it when chasing a game , it often resulted in semi chaos with players running around at random and clearly struggling to adapt to a system (?) with which they were unfamiliar .

I know all this is heresy to some but I can only tell it as I see it and I have spoken to a number of Blades who think on exactly the same lines .

We'll have to disagree on the first bit because I don't think it's realistic to expect a striker to take every chance created for him, and Oli is only about 2 under his xG.
From my very eyes I didn't see him miss more than 1 chance all season that I expected him to score.

Second bit, I agree wholeheartedly with. And that's the issue.

Anyone expecting McB to be the thrust of any additional goal output next season, is going to end up feeling shortchanged.

FUTURE FACT 😉

McBurnie can and will improve next season but, he must grow up a tad and take responsibility for actions, drink driving watching Swansea (FFS) that's bad Swansea I mean. I admit he's still young but I think CW and his staff will improve him, Moose needs to get order in his personal life.

I just wish people stopped saying 'we need x in the PL', we don't, we stayed up with what we have comfortably.

The only thing we do need is a goalkeeper, cos obviously that's the one bit of last year's team that we don't have any more.

Other than speculation about Watkins' non-existent release clause, we haven't been concretely linked with any forwards, have we? Maybe Rhian Brewster at a stretch. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we aren't in for a forward this Summer, at least not a big money one.

CW stated specifically that he wants more quality at the top of the pitch.
Leon has gone + Calum is going.
Mousset is hanging by a thread.
We'll be down to 4 strikers , maybe 3.
I reckon 2 new strikers are needed to avoid relegation.
Hopefully one will be a loan.
We'll need to pay a fee for the other , the size of which depends on so many variables that even CW won't know it yet.
I appreciate we might not have unlimited resources , but to my mind if we score as few next season we'll be in trouble.

if you look back he had chances my 10 year old could score. Is It confidence ? It is lack of experience ? Who knows but put Sharp in the same situation that McBurnie didnt take the chance and Sharp would have scored.
Nobody mention McGoldrick.
Elephant sits quietly by the coffee table, out of sight.

Seems like you yourself admit that this Target/algorithm of yours was a one season thing for starters. But hey ho, it's going to be a whole new campaign. And truly, I did/do expect us to make sensible purchases with long term in view. I'm pretty sure CW did/does. What if McBurnie won't score more goals next season? What if our midfield "fails" again in delivering the ball straight to his head when the opposing team's GK is on holiday? Or should we perhaps get rid of all the midfield in order to buy players - from League One - who can better serve Oli than our present squad? Anyways, I truly hope to be proven wrong, Oli scoring some 22 goals next season. I promise even to buy that god awful p*ssy-coloured away shirt with Oli's name on it, if he keeps banging them in.
I wouldn't buy it under any circumstances.

I’ve noticed a lot of posters frothing at the mouth for another striker... and I don’t get it?

Sure 18 goals between the 5 strikers we have as things stand isn’t a great return. But I don’t feel like any of them (except Didzy) missed loads of chances, so surely we need to focus more on personnel that can create more chances?

We spent £38 mil on strikers in the last window, so I feel that unless we can shift Robinson for a decent fee I can’t really see us buying a new forward.

What do you lot think?

I think the combined age of three of last season's strikers, Sharp, McGoldrick and Clarke is over 100 years old. Now, there's a clue for you?

Clarke has left now - gone into a care home I think. But that still leaves Sharp and McGoldrick who are, let's face it...in the "Autumn" of their careers.

We then have Mousset - who doesn't seem to know whether he's on this earth or Fuller's Earth. Would you pin your Premier League hopes on him delivering week in, week out, if you were Chris Wilder? Would you?

And of course we've got Oli McBurnie - a child trapped in a man's body. Who, if he stays out of trouble, could make a very good contribution to the team. But he's a one-dimensional player is Oli. He's a blunt instrument - and when he's at his best, as he was towards the end of last season, he's great. Very good at winning the ball in the air and holding up play - but you need a bit more than that in a team. You need a mixture of aerial power, speed, pace, skill. You need different types of strikers.

I don't disagree with your other point though - the problem is not just the strikers, but those providing the ammunition to them - and that's another area where we can and will improve I think, if some of the rumoured signings come true.

But your question is about strikers - and for the reasons I've given, I think it's essential to get one (or two) in.

We need to be able to hold onto possession in the final third, progress up the field as a unit and deliver decent balls in when we get up there.

A pacy wide forward (like Dennis) isn't what's needed. We need our wide men to beat players & create openings.

The first point you make being abundantly clear to anyone with half an idea about progressive football. Some of it is tactical naivety IMHO. Particularly in the 2nd half of the season, we have gone far too direct far too often and it hasn’t worked.

This combined with the fact that the guy who has occupied the most pitch minutes for this role being particularly out of his depth as regards this key performance indicator is concerned !!

I posted on another thread a few days ago, that Wilder seems intent on improving our strike rate, by having greater depth of options for sttscking full backs, and midfielders . The strikers we do have will get better service and more opportunities.
Defensive backs and midfield against stronger sides, and more attack minded players deployed at home, or against lesser teams.
If the rumored signings do arrive, Wilder can happily work to mount phase 2 of his survival plan.
1. secure the defense.
2. Improve quality and diversity in midfield and attacking full backs.
3. Improve an aging and limited strike force.

In the meantime we will have the players to rotate and give us different options in attack and in chance creation.
Our strikers all have potential, Even giving Sharp and Didzy contract extensions makes sense.
Start with McBurnie and Moose and bring Billy on when Moose is knackered. Start with McBurnie and Didzy when we need to press and cover against stronger sides.
This makes sense for progress, use of current assets and arrivals, and budget constraints. Another top 10 finish is perfectly acceptable for our second season.
In phase three, we may be in a position to acquire serious strikers, and go for top six/Europe.
It makes sense to me anyway.
Re keepers. There are plenty about, this season or next. All depends on OGS.
