But if we get this wrong this isn’t just season defining this could define our club for the next 5-10 years. If he’s a flop we are in big trouble.

No way will Hendo be coming back. We can't afford (or rather, we don't want to pay) what would be a very substantial loan fee and the majority, of not all, of his now super high wages. This is not Wilder's style. He would be sending the wrong messages out to the rest of the players.

Altough I rate Hendo very highly, he is not irreplaceable. I agree that this is a very important decision we have to make. We are not unique though, every club has crucial transfer decisions to make from time to time. I have 100% confidence in Wilder and his team to make the right call.

What a load of dramatic nonsense. You should be writing for Fox News or something - you're wasted on here!

In the majority of games I've seen us play this last season, our goalkeeper has rarely been called upon to make saves in any case. The defence in front of him has been so effective. I think Henderson has been very good for us, no doubt about that at all. But he's also got a rick or two in him and I haven't been impressed with his performances since we came back after lockdown. There we go - no one is perfect. He's still a very good goalkeeper, but we can do just as good, or better, and I think we will.

The other thing is, some of our fans are easily pleased with goalkeepers most of the time. A couple of years ago there were many on here who thought Jamal Blackman was the greatest goalkeeper since Lev Yashin. Even though the bloke went down in instalments for low shots. We see what we want to see sometimes. We can ignore glaring gaps in their game if they do other things well. In Blackman's case, he was excellent in the air, not too difficult when you are 6'5" I imagine, but he couldn't get down for low shots and he couldn't kick it straight enough to keep it on the pitch most of the time. But we conveniently overlooked those things. If we want it bad enough, we can make someone a cult hero, regardless of ability.

The goalkeeper position is an important one, but you know what? If we sign one who isn't up to it then we just bring another one in, it's really that easy. I doubt we will sign a goalkeeper who isn't up to it - but they could get injured or lose form. These things happen.

James Beattie

All of them "outgoing" transfers - which absolutely rocked the foundations of the club and ruined our chances of making progress that season, or in the case of TC, for many seasons afterwards.

Goalkeepers? Yeah, they're important. But not THAT important.

I think it may be one of our most important in terms of decisions, but it’s unlikely to be the most important in terms of impact. I’d be amazed if whoever we sign has the impact of Basham, Egan, Norwood or McGoldrick.

Don't get me wrong Hendo is a fantastic keeper but not the finished article,

part of a sound defence
good 1v1 situations
played a huge part in getting us where we are
- kicking and poor distribution
seldom comes out to claim crosses
tends to punch
sometimes leaves gaps on the near post
bit of a show pony at times making saves look spectacular when they are routine
and last of all we are developing a keeper for Man Utd.
Overall I think we could get another young keeper who's overall game is as good as Hendo's and develop him for Sheffield Utd sure we will pay a hefty transfer fee but we will save on wages we can't pay anywhere near average Man Utd salaries. You could say Hendo has outgrown us and we have outgrown Hendo I don't see any advantage of a 3rd year of loaning Hendo. At some point we have to bite the bullet and get our own keeper.

I don't think so. I think he'll never have a better chance to establish himself as the number 1 at Man Utd. He's just come off the back of a very successful season for us and it coincides with a disappointing season for Man Utd's current number 1 keeper, De Gea. It looks like their number 2 keeper is likely to on his way - so now Henderson is in a 2 horse race to become number 1 at Man Utd. He will never get a better chance than that and he'd be crazy not to push the boat out for that opportunity.

His second best option, if he can't get assurances that he will start for Man Utd, is to take a big money transfer elsewhere. The kind of money that will be put in his back pocket from a move to Chelsea, or Spurs, for example, will see him made for life, at a very young age. Plus he'll be more or less guaranteed to be playing at the top end of the Prem and challenging for European football.

His third best option is to sign another season's loan with us, with an immediate recall clause should Man Utd decide the time is ready for him to be number 1.

His worst option is to sign another season's loan with us without an immediate recall clause. Not that we're bad for him - far from it. In fact, were it not for the opportunity we've provided him, he wouldn't be in this position now. But he's "graduated" from here now mate - I've no doubt he loves our club and the fans etc,. but it's time for him to seize his opportunity and I don't blame him for that one bit.

We wouldn't be bidding million of pounds for other goalkeepers if we were expecting him to come back.

Though a good keeper makes a difference no doubt.I reckon Hendo was worthabout 5 or 6 points last year for us tops over a 'standard' keeper. After taking away the points he cost us. You see now, this is a very good point. I totally agree that whoever is going to be the new goalkeeper needs to be in the club asap, because that relationship between the goalkeeper and the defenders is very important. They need to know who is going to come for what and when, etc., and have that understanding between them before a competitive ball is kicked.

The Championship is the proving ground for young players like Klopp did with Woodburn and Manure did with Hendo.

The position of GK even more so, Hendo was proved in Championship and PL so we now have to pay the PL going rate for him or an other.
