'Former Barnsley and Leeds United manager Paul Heckingbottom has been appointed as United's U23s lead coach.

The 43-year-old, who managed in the SPL with Hibernian last season, joins United with immediate effect.

Yorkshire-born Heckingbottom was an apprentice at Manchester United in the early 90s and enjoyed a 16-year playing career representing, amongst others, Scarborough, Darlington, Bradford City, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Mansfield Town before ending his playing days in non-league.

As a manager the former defender enjoyed success at Oakwell as caretaker manager following the departures of Danny Wilson and then Lee Johnson, before leading Barnsley to promotion to the Championship via the play-offs and a Football League Trophy triumph, both coming at Wembley. The journey continued in the second tier, as he led the Tykes to a respectable 14th place finish at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

In February 2018, Heckingbottom moved to Elland Road following the departure of Thomas Christiansen and his first game was against the Blades at Bramall Lane.

Of Heckingbottom's appointment, Academy Manager Jack Lester remarked: "Paul is a fantastic coach and a great appointment for the club.

"He brings a wealth of experience to the Academy and we are delighted to have secured his services. We have some excellent prospects coming through in the next few years and it is vital we have top coaches, like Paul, and Derek Geary, who remains lead coach for the U18s, to develop them." '

Pretty decent appointment for all imho! :)

Interesting- certainly seemed to do very well at Barnsley and probably a jump to the wrong club at the wrong time in Leeds (where it didn’t quite work out).

From memory seemed to develop a really good home grown crop of young talent at Barnsley who they managed to get in the side / sell on for some good money.

I'll gratefully accept any information as to why Andrew Hughes, appointed by Lester, left so early in his tenure.....

He said he could not take it anymore. Everywhere he turned this group of blokes with carrier bags were around. The final straw was when one chap followed him into his local supermarket and popped up in the frozen aisle brandishing a sheet angrily pointing to the the words 'number 18, A. Trialist' demanding his name and our plans for him.

They then asked if he could escort them into a u23 game behind closed doors at Hartlepool the following Thursday night. They offered favours in exchange but the out of date CAMRA tokens just further startled Hughes.

He was waking up in cold sweats and had to remove every single carrier bag he owned. Even the bags for life were thrown out.

He has a left a note for Hecky at Shirecliffe telling him that he will never be alone. Ever.

Thanks for the info. You're right. He was certainly no Binnion.....

Excellent quote, but would the stalking not occur amongst the 8% NEIPAs, 10% butter nut toffee imperial stouts or tactically astute hazy lower gravity IPAs in the select aisle of a local top notch beer shop? That amongst overheard mutterings of juicetastic, hopbrilliance, soured sharpness or toasted chocolate over vanilla ice cream notes.

And yes, I’m a 100% beer geek and love it. Though, I’m not even in the Isthmian League of craft beer knowledge compared to the CBF’s Bundesliga level! As a fellow Abbeydale Grange old boy I just hope my early training sessions in Sheffield 7, 2 and 1 will stand me in good stead during my apprenticeship.

Why do children go 'gathering nuts in May' then?

Children have bikes too!

They don't/didn't. "Nuts" is mistakenly used for "knots" (of flowers) as anyone who paid attention at costly private school would know if they hadn't spent too much time playing pencil cricket! Knot out! You may say.......

How's life as Tuttons protege working for you?

You really are so wise. You are wasted as a detailed fact checker on here and really ought to have a proper job.

At least that costly private school taught me how to use the possessive apostrophe.

Tut tut........

Andrew Hughes has joined Pigs coaching team, along with James Beattie

Let's hope he coaches the strikers to play as he did in his second spell with us, rather than his first.

One of my all-time favourite players is Beattie.
