Putting 2 + 2 and maybe getting 5?

In Wilder's potentially slightly over-the-top and a little overly entitled rant, he is mentioning defenders and midfielders fishing for contracts and asking for days off. It seems that received wisdom in the shoutbox was that this was definitely aimed at Lunny. Some also mentioned John Egan.

I can't really see him laying into John Egan so shortly after winning us 4 points in the last week?

Since then, I gave this some thought and kind of started leaning towards the defender maybe being Bash? Taken off twice in two matches for looking knackered after playing nearly every minute of every match might tally with a request for a day off. And there is the rumour that Newcastle or Burnley are alerted to his contract running out in 2021.

Could it be Bash who asked for an extension to secure his future? Or is it a clear case of too much time on my hands and getting my basic numbers in the title of the thread wrong?

I think you’re looking into it too much. This isn’t the first time Wilder has called out the players on the press. The thing is, he doesn’t have to name individuals. The point is that whatever he is getting at, those in question will know exactly what he’s talking about and tbh, that should be enough to give them a kick up the arse. If it doesn’t, they will be on their bike anyway and with good reason.

Nothing was clearly at any one player. He’s thrown out a few generalisations and it’ll fit a fair few I’d suspect. Over the next few days you’ll have our fans pointing out who it is and coming up with all sorts of stories and conspiracy theories as to what the root cause is and it’ll all amount to the square root of fuck all.

Basham is one of fittest members of the squad, but also one of the oldest (32?). In fact, I think only Jags and Billy are older. He usually plays every minute of every game and has for years and years. I really don't think theres anything anymore sinister than he’s A) maybe finally getting a bit fatigued after the heavy schedule on restart, and B) been taken off for tactical reasons to go more offensive.

If I was asked to guess one player from the entire club who was rocking the boat, the very last name I’d pick would be Basham.

Maybe just wishful thinking on my part, but I can't see Bash ever asking for time off. He's by far the fittest player we have, and one of the fittest I think I have ever seen play. But the team is playing every few days, so anything is possible, but again I would imagine that this schedule affects him less than some other players. I honestly think his subs have been tactical.

Stevens looked well off the pace again tonight, and Baldock looked uncharacteristically sluggish by his standards. Considering neither have missed a minute this season, I wouldn't be at all surprised if either had asked to sit a game out. But that is 2 + 2 = 5 from me.

Aa disappointed as we all are, and whilst the players could've performed much better last night, one thing is for sure - they've now applied themselves really well at PL level this season and our reviewed pay structure will need to reflect that.

Chris - it’s Bash you’re talking about pal.
The same Bash who was totally gutted after the Man U game.
The same Bash who is probably one of the fittest in the squad.
The same Bash who got took off last game after a bang on the head - have you had one too??

With a name like mine and a bang on the head, have you considered the possibility that I may indeed be ... Bash‘em?? 🤩

Agree totally.

Wilder has also said on a number of occasions that Basham is basically one of, if not, his favourite player - I really doubt Bash would do owt to upset the Apple cart.

Anyway, if he is aiming his rant at anyone in particular, they will know who they are and that’s what matters.

I actually took the contract comment from Wilder to be more about the past - a general jab at players who have wanted (and presumably received) new deals in the past as reward for their performances. The club has rewarded performances with new contracts in recent years, this sounded like he was basically showing his disappointment at a drop in standards from players from whom he expects better, and whom we've looked after with new deals.

It was so obviously a tactical switch with Bash I dont think the OP was watching the same match.

Im not sure its aimed at one in particular, its mind games. He does this to make the team think “ooh is it me he is annoyed with” , then they up their game.
