As a member of the so called 'Sunshine Gang' I call upon all Blades to get behind Gary Speed and his team and let us all put the past behind us!
No I am no overjoyed to hear that Sam Ellis is his number two, but, if it was Speedo's choice then I will go with it! Perhaps Sam is the ideal experienced guy to have alongside a rookie manager, as I said it was Speedo's choice!
Carver has a good pedigree, from the Bobby Robson academy, he's worked well with Speedo before and he'll bring in fresh ideas!
I call on all Blades alike Mic, Ollie, Pinchy, Lenners et al and Boo, Swiss, Dunc and all the clappers to bury the hatchet and give Speedo and the gang our full support:thumbup:

I'll drink to that

As im a newbie, please kindly explain "sunshine gang." Is that supposed to have some irony attached to it or something?

If Speedo wins us promotion I may just dress and dance like this.... :nana:

According to some, we have two kinds of Posters on here.
'the sunshine gang/happy clappers' who don't see any bad in what United do / or more realistically actually support the team by trying to encourage them.
and the second lot who are miserable and don't see any good in what the club / players or anyone connected with the team do and in particular like to blame two certain players for everything negative that happens.

Guess which one I fall into :D

Sensi... the sunshine band are the negative bunch!

I was away over the weekend and missed out on all the furore/excitement/speculation. So I'm going to get a few things off my chest first and then (as always) I'll be backing the team and our new manager.

1) I don't agree with United hiring "rookie" managers. Everybody has to start somewhere but almost all the best managers start at the bottom and work their way up. (e.g. Clough, Ferguson, Wenger or in our case Bassett and Warnock). Even Speed admits it's a very steep learning curve and a "massive" job to take on with no previous experience. I'd prefer him to be learning his trade with some other club personally.

2) What the hell were Birch and McCabe thinking!? If they were going to get rid of Blackwell so soon, they should have done it in May which would have given them chance to look at all the managerial options available and given the new man time to construct his own squad for the new season. Now they've been bounced into a quick/cheap appointment of a manager who inherits another man's players and has precious little time to recruit any of his own or impose his own style of play.

3) Why a three year contract? In the ludicrous position United placed themselves in, I could understand giving Speed the job in a caretaker role until the next transfer window in January and then reviewing the situation. But now, if it quickly becomes apparent that he is a duff manager (a la Heath and Robson), we're either stuck with him or we face another massive compensation payout.

4) My big fear is that ultimately we United fans will look back on the last few days in the same way as we do the rushed and wrong-headed appointment of Bryan Robson. Only this time, we're starting from a much lower base and I forsee a very tough, at best average, couple of years ahead.

Now I've said my piece, I'm not going to keep harping on it. A managerial change is always an exciting time and I'm very much looking forward to seeing Gary and the lads prove me wrong. Up the Blades!

I'm behind him ........... McCabe/Birch must know sumat we don't ! ............or they are a reight pair of thick fookers  hang on ...why did cheap as chips get his contract extended?
McCabe wud never appoint 3 shit managers in a row ....wud he ?

McCabe has made some really dodgy 'football' decisions eg Beattie, Robson, McCabe etc I believe this time he has got it right!

You're right Fiery.

So Blackwell's gone his tenure was largely debated and split the troops, its time for a new era.

Whether you agree with the sacking, the snap appointment, recruiting from within etc McCabe/ Birch have got their man.

Personally I'm torn, whilst I want Speed to do well I'm not convinced that an inexperienced manager was what we needed. But he appears to be getting the backing...

Only time will tell how he fairs or how long he gets before the Sunshine Band turn and the Clappers support him to the hilt.

Right now I'm looking forward to a new start, early season optimism took a hit on sat but its slowly starting to recover. New coach and a couple of signings before the weekend could really set us up nicely...

Roll on Sunday, roll on this season!

Up the Blades

Which is typical, as although I'm professionally miserable, I'm still a fully fledged member of the happy clappers, seemingly. Back to schitzophrenia for me .....

I think it's ironic that the last remaining Robson signing has ended up as the manager.

I was underwhelmed by the news this week, as it went totally as I expected. We now need to be a united United and get behind both the management and team.

Hear, Hear Swiss
Fiery by name, Fiery by nature
I will now be back at BDTBL supporting the boys to the hilt even Monty, Quinny and Henderson if he ever makes a return but I do believe Speedo can drive us forward!
Onward and Upward

Here's my thoughts.

Good luck to Gary, he has my full support

Let's hope those who wouldn't renew thier st until Blackie had gone, will now do so and back GS by renewing now.

As much as I'm fully supportive of GS, I'm also critical of the board. Yes, we've done the "why sack blackie 2 games in?" to death. My argument is the fact that as a multi million pound, professionally run business, when it comes to employing managers, we are second rate! We must be the only multi million pound business that doesn't got through the due process of lists, interviews, short lists, second interviews, discussing all options and then finally making an informed choice. We seem to do this every time. Frankly and imho, it's piss poor.

Yes, I've heard the reasons why, that they were already going to employ GS as manager, so why bother? Totally and utterly wrong imo. They should go through the process and listen to what applicants have to say. They should listen and learn, because as far as I can see they are clueless when it comes to employing managers.

So Speed it is and I wish him well. My concern is this..............right man ............wrong time!

Prove me wrong Gary. The very best of luck m8, you're goner need it!

I'm backing Speedo. I don't expect miracles. I do hope to see early evidence of a real intention to change the playing style and that policy to gradually gather momentum. I'll tolerate adverse results if the green shoots are rising.

What a shame it took 4000 non-renewals to get us to this point. It will be much harder to get them back.

Good luck Speedo. You were a top class player and a model professional footballer. A real credit to our club. You deserve to succeed as a manager. I truly hope you do so at SUFC because us long-suffering fans deserve our day in the sun.

I'm not sure the entire fall in season ticket sales was solely down to the quality - or lack thereof - of football under Blackwell. Unless of course 4000 people have bought season tickets now Speed is the manager, which I sincerely doubt.

I find it incredible that anyone can be against Speed. OK, you may prefer not to employ an experienced manager but that's different, now he's here I can't see why anyone can't give him and the team 100% support from Sunday.

I love it Fiery. The daft grin on my face is getting a bit tiring now but Blackwell has gone. Unfortunately, like Robson, he will never, ever be forgotten but he has gone and all Blades are rejoicing to some extent, don't worry about that. The sun has come out, the darkness is lifted and Blackwell is history. Pure sweetness.

SUFC are back as a meaningful entity. I will experience a very strange sensation on Sunday involving a genuine desire for SUFC to win a game.

Good luck Speedo.

Thanks Sensiblade. I'll have to get to know who is in each faction but it does sound as if this divide is starting to disappear with Blackwell's departure. That can only be a good thing because we're all Blades arent we? I suppose you could call me a "happy clapper" though :D

I am glad for the change of manager though. It was becoming so turgid under Blackwell, but I do wish him well in the future. He tried his best.

Showing potential for the Sunshine Band already, Fiery, Torrix, Olle and Mic will be keeping an eye on your posts for further signs of negative potential :)

Come on, he did say 'becoming' turgid, that wouldn't even get him an interview :)

Correct, he or she would not have got a look in, other than for comedy value.

We're all behind Speedo now, aren't we Swiss? No more negativity from me and no more pops at Blackwell, although I have to say I feel ever so slightly lost without him! Is there a condition or sommat where a hostage actually grows fond of their captors inspite of brutality and torture?

I do have an element of Sheffield pessimism about me, but I love my club and get behind the boys whoever is in charge

Perhaps I could keep my options open and apply for both!

Gutted....thats not the character reference I needed Jim. I guess I'm left to apply as a clapper :D

I used to be referred to as chief-clapper on the old forum before Dunc ousted me so you know which side of the fence I generally sit on....or should that be shed (just for you Raul :) )

Yeah it all seems quite surreal now, we seem to be in agreement.

Totally behind Speed and I hope we can all stick behind him.

Obviously the club have a few other issues to sort and Speed is a gamble, but lets back him, be patient and if we can get results and fill the lane with more effective football then we'll all be happier.

As I said, it will be much harder to regain the lost support than to lose it. Blacko did that with ease. It is his lasting legacy to our club.

You will recall that many of us predicted this decline last year. I spoke to literally dozens of people who were not going to renew. 100% cited the appalling style of play; not one the recession or anything else. Not a scientific sample I accept but the writing was on the wall and the author was our recently departed purveyor of mediocrity and misery.

The non-renewers around me all cited money, but the fact is that people seem to find the money when needs must. Most people see things in terms of value for money, and last season there wasn't much of that.

If we're in the top 10 at Xmas with a decent chance together with signs of improved style and I reckon the half-season tickets will be in great demand, particularly as the better home games are in the 2nd half of the season.

Let's see.....wild conspiracy theories about how everything is following a cunning plan....check! Phrases like "I've got a feeling" and "I've a sneaking suspicion" creeping back in...check!

Dunc, watch out, I sense a coup d'etat in the offing, Fleety wants his crown back.
