They don't seem to be aware that WE are the original United! Quite a few Wednesday fans have infiltrated this discussion I suspect.

Calling 'Sheffield United' just 'Sheffield'

This probably doesn't deserve it's own thread, but for the love of God PLEASE can we stamp out this scourge from this forum. It's like nails down a fecking chalkboard whenever anyone uses it.

I honestly don't mind it.

Pigs have been away that long that there are genuine adults in the top flight that have never seen Sheffield Wednesday play.

I call Bristol City, "Bristol" regularly as like one of those on the Man U forum says - "they're in our league, so we know who we're talking about".

Keep us in PL for another 5 seasons and people will genuinely not even think about Wednesday when you mention Sheffield.

One thing that could/should change though - why not just call us United when we are playing anybody other than another United?

It pisses me off when people say "United" or "City" when it's two playing against eachother. I noticed Gary Neville was trying VERY hard to not just say "United" during our recent game. I appreciated that.
 
I hate being called Sheffield. Yes you may call other teams like Real Madrid just Madrid or Newcastle United as Newcastle etc. But my reason is purely this: There is already a team called Sheffield. Yes they aren't professional, but they are the oldest club in the world, so that has to mean something for the history of football and Sheffield itself. Here in Sheffield when talking to our friends and family we say United. e.g. "How did United get on last night?" When we are really happy we say "Yes Blades, come on you Blades". I have never said "Come on Sheffield" or "How well did Sheffield play?" Cos you just look like a tit imo.

I feel exactly the same way. I should just let it go and I should stop correcting this new breed of fans who picked their team on FIFA and just dismissively call us 'Sheffield' but I can't.

What did you call Bristol Rovers in the 2016/17 season? Were they Bristol or is that reserved solely for City?
 
If you're under twenty you've never witnessed Wednesday in the top flight. You have to be a few years older than that to actually remember it.

I think it's time we grudgingly accept that we are the city now as far as football's concerned. Wednesday have been floundering for so long people have forgotten where they're even from.

I agree with this. I'd be more annoyed as a Wednesday fan as calling us Sheffield is like saying they don't exist at all.

I think we all probably see big clubs as the ones who were in the top division and doing well when we first got into football. To 40 somethings Wednesday will be seen as bigger, to people under 30 Wednesday will be seen as a non entity
 
Personally I’ve no problem at all with Man U fans describing their club as “United”. I dont even mind it from ex- players like Gary Neville. Thats their club. They affectionately know them as “United”, just as we do.

Same would be true of Leeds, West Ham, Newcastle, Carlisle or any other United.

Its when supposedly neutral journos and reporters do it nonchalantly that grinds my gears.

I don’t even think it’s dismissive. The media are to blame, they really shouldn’t be calling any team “United.” This is an endearing term and being impartial they should be using it.
They have conditioned younger football fans in the belief there is only one United. They have conveniently shorn Newcastle, West Ham and (when they get promoted) Leeds of their full titles in an attempt to accommodate those “all conquering darlings” Manchester United. But this will never work with our beloved Blades. We have from our humble beginnings always been called “United,”but the same can’t be said about our Manc counterparts.
 
I have mixed views on this:
When the pundits or commentators on TV refer to us as _Sheffield', for me, it just confirms our status and just relegates the Pigs, as they are actually known, further into obscurity!
However, when my County Durham born non-football supporting/liking girlfriend refers to us as Sheffield I find myself correcting her by adding "United'!
 
Not sure what I fine more tedious now, being called Sheffield or those moaning because we're being called Sheffield.. I noticed that Michael Tonge calls us Sheffield many times in his Undr The Cosh episode, it didn't bother me. I knew he was talking about us funnily enough, same as players or pundits, there's only one Sheffield team in the PL, so it can't be Sheffield F.C or the Pigs..

I agree. I nearly always refer to us as ‘United’, unless I’m talking to someone who I don’t know so well, so then I go for the full name.
 
I'm honestly surprised that calling us Sheffield hasn't been more widespread. Pleasantly surprised, even. You get the odd person who does it but most other fans and pundits are sure not to. It's only really international fans of the PL that do it on a regular basis and I understand that.

Also, don't forget this also happened when we were in L1 and the Championship anyway.
 
I take issue with people calling us "Sheffield" for a few reasons. Firstly, it makes it sound like the person doesn't know football at all, as there are two other clubs with Sheffield in their name and one of them is already literally called Sheffield FC. It's also a bit offensive to the other two teams.

Above any of that though, the fact is we have never been known as that by anyone, most importantly ourselves. It can't be compared to calling Sheffield Wednesday "Wednesday", or Manchester United "United" or Leeds United "Leeds" etc. because those teams are known as that by their fans. Calling us "Sheffield" is just plain wrong.
 
Same reason we were referred to as Manchester for years. Nobody knows who Sheffield Wednesday are anymore.
The only recent thing I know about Wednesday is them scoring against Sheffield, bouncing up and down and then immediately conceding a goal. It’s one of the funniest videos you’ll ever see. 😆 😆 😆
 



I've learned from S2 that the best way to trigger Forest fans is to call them "NOTTS Forest". As far as they're concerned "Notts" are Notts County.

Doesn't seem to occur to them that "Notts" is the accepted shorthand for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire!
