The appointment of Speedo made 2nd news item on GMTV's sports news this morning, which just shows that he is big news, partly down to his likeability in the game and the fact he is, or has been, 'media friendly' in the past. I'm pretty sure Blackwell's appointment wasn't considered newsworthy enough at the time for example.

It will be interesting to see how he comes across over the next few weeks and of course, how he reacts when things aren't going to plan but he does seem to have all the tools for the job and will certainly give us a much better profile in the media than we've had for a while. Who knows, maybe he'll even be able to start shaking off the hard men / long ball tag that we've had since Bassett's days.

I have a feeling as well that he's going to pull off the odd interesting loan deal as doubtless he's got the contacts and respect of other managers.

The down side of this is that if he does do well, there won't be a shortage of clubs coming knocking every time they have a vacancy but I guess that's the nature of the business these days.

Nice thread. Do you know that for sure Jim Chim?

How was Robson's appointment treated by the media.

Perhaps its just a very quiet news day :)

It's a fair cop :) To be fair, Robson, albeit with plenty of cash behind him, did persuade Beattie to join us which I'm not sure the manager either side of him could have.

Get my general drift though.

Not so much the media, but the fans of other teams I knew (and living in London, there tends to be a right old mixture) found Robsons appointment nothing short of hillarious.

There's none of that with Speed, but obviously that's down to him being an unknown quantity. No doubt he's well liked though.

I've got loads of boro mates and they were either pissing themselves laughing, or offering their sincere condolences.

I remember reading an article on F365 which went something like, "Sheffield Utd would normally be considered favourites to bounce back at the first attempt, but they have just gone and ruined their chances by appointing Bryan Robson." Fairly sure it was written by Sarah Winterburn, who i think is a Blade. Could be wrong on that last point though.

Will be interesting to hear his first interviews. I hope he can tell a bit of his football philosophy and the changes he'd like to make, and not just say how pleased he is to be manager of this massive club, etc...

It may be difficult to make major changes straight away though, with the current squad.

Bergen, I am assuming the recent Contact renewals to Monty and Quinn were run by Speed, I cant imagine we were renewing Contracts and at the same time plotting to be rid of Blackwell, without thinking bout the future.

I am happy that Speed is happy with Monty and Quinn.

I'd be very surprised if that was true. I reckon them two were among the ones on the top of Blackwell's priority list that he left for Birch to carry through in the summer. Speed may well have been in total agreement of the priority though.

Squinny has put some decent performances in over the years, maybe Speedo can get the best out of him. There always seemed to be a frosty relationship between him and Blackie, they barely made eye contact when he came off on Saturday, not for the 1st time.

Not saying Squinny should be in the team, particularly when Willo gets fit, but I wouldn't write him off either. He, as much as anyone, has sufffered under Blackwell IMO.

And yet one of the major criticisms people made of Blackwell was that he would never drop Quinn, no matter how badly he played...

True but that doesn't mean to say that Squinny hated him and his form suffered accordingly. Billy Sharp is another prime example who seems a lot happier at Donny and is no doubt wishing he'd hung on for a month or so.

I think he can. Quinny has the ability to get the ball down and play under the right circumstances and I'm hopeful that Speed can pass on his experience as a midfielder as a way of building Quinny's confidence.

The big question for me is, if Speed is going to get us playing more attractive football can he get the likes of Morgs and Monty to keep it on the deck. Robson tried it with a few of our players and struggled to make it effective. Some of our key players aren't the most technically gifted but I really hope Speed can show them a different way. That is where he will need someone experienced alongside him to make the transition (if any) easier.

My opinion, but to have any chance of basing the style of play around possession you need to have 2 central midfielders playing who can receive the ball, sometimes under a bit of pressure and these midfielders have to be able to turn/dribble and drive away from that pressure and create time for themselves to move/pass the ball forward. Willo can do this I believe and even Quinn can do this at his best. I sit at bottom of Gangway G and have seen Quinn involved in some lovely little moves on that flank when the side has been playing with confidence - it can be done but very rarely has this been as the result of a series of passes moving the ball forward through the midfield. That said, nothing wrong for me with knocking it long for me and then playing in the final third but for whatever reason it had for me gone very wrong under Blackwell. Moussi and McKenna would be the type of midfield I'm talking about. It's not Ajax type stuff I want, just a bit of ability and versatility.

If Monty is in the team we might as well go for a proper long ball approach involving pace, height and mobility - of which we have very little, but would be more exciting to watch perhaps

Speed has got his work cut out big time if he is working with the current squad.

Sorry that this has nowt to do with Speed's media profile. Will he be giving up appearances on Question of Sport and Radio 5?

Don't know enough about Jordan but Nyron and Bartley certainly like to play football. Morgs will never change although there have been signs over the last 18 months that he can pass it when the mood takes. I just think his natural aggression and 'ave it' attitude gets the better of him some times.

A more varied approach is definitely needed, but passing has to be made with a purpose, i.e. with an aim to create chances. Under Robson we seemed to pass the ball around aimlessly in the back four before someone decided to close us down, which resulted in a hoof forward. Such slow build can kill movement, is easy to defend against, ineffective, and you have to be considerably better than the opposition to make it work. Our team is nowhere near good enough to do that.

So, when asked today about the changes he'd like to make, prhases like "we'll be looking to pass it more about" isn't necessarily something that will fill me with optimism.

I simply don't believe this Robbo / Beattie love-in. If Warnock was in charge with the same money on offer I think the outcome would have been identical.

Where manager's contacts matter most is in extracting favours for loan deals. Favours don't count in the world of permanent transfers - just money.

To be honest Bergs, I suspect today will be full of the usual cliches, I doubt whether he's going to tell us anymore than "I'm looking forward to getting to work with the players".

Actuallly i have evidence to provide you are wrong JD. I was driving home from birmingham just a couple of months ago and went for a coffee at the services. I was served after a certain MR. Beattie. I got talking toh im and when quizzed about robson he said that was a big reason he moved to the club and they often go to each others houses and are good friends (pre and post SUFC).

On another note, he thought Blackwell was a very dull man and described him as an 'oppertunist', which im not sure i totally understood at the time!

P.S, he also told me he had agreed terms with blackburn in january but it fell through, bet hes gutted nah!

I stand corrected!

True mate, and that's why I didn't go into much detail in the question suggestion thread... :)

Will Speed be the first United manager to have an MBE?

Martin Peters has one, although I am unsure as to whether he had it when he was Blades manager.

I think the burning question is.....will he be a business suit or tracksuit manger???? I see him more of a business suit man myself.

Really? What is the source of your happiness? Do you enjoy a good comedy?
