Mentioned on another thread I spent a couple of seasons clinging on to these for the full ninety minutes.

How my fingers survived this at a tender age I’ll never know and looking back how on earth I never got hit in the clock with a wayward shot is a mystery

I was there 1973 ish. With my Grandma's season ticket as my Grandad took me down to BDTBL. God rest their souls.😎
 
Bert remembers reading that one or two supporters bought sections of it when they were removed.
 
I think I spotted myself on one of the old tv highlights when we stuffed Leicester think it was 4-0. I was clinging onto the white railings on the Kop just to the right of the goal as you looked from the camera position. You had to get there about 2 o’clock to get a spot !!

Same here saw myself in my usual position behind the goal. Wierd seeing yourself when 5!

Once saw ball impaled on the railings. Playing West Ham if anyone remembers. Those railings would be considered health and safety nightmare now.

Also be interesting to know when the railings were erected.
I have heard that they were the reason why the ground was never established for Test Match use, early player H&S.
 
As a young ‘un in the 1950’s i used to stand at the front at the Bramall Lane end.I remember that your knees used to go through the white railings if you stood on the concrete base and the Coppers would come and tell you to ‘get your knees in lad’.I was told that if the ball hit your knee it could break your leg,they were proper leather footballs then and bloody heavy when they were wet.
 
I used to stand right up to them on the Kop and my dad was further back ( I can't believe he did that ! lol ) I was about 10 yards from where all the railings collapsed , I think it was a cup match and it was packed !! they continued the match with ambulances coming on the cricket pitch ..... can you imagine it !! .. Talk about different days haha... I wasn't fazed at all and watched the match , I can't remember if dad came and got me? but I DO remember my mum going ape shit when we got home ! as it had been on the news . We hard ( daft ) in them days..
 
Happy memories, just tall enough to see over. Always made it to the front with the tunnel just to my right on John street.
Decked in a homemade scarf knitted by my mum, who incidentally had no idea at how to get the red or white bands of equal length.
Me and a mate spent hours making a plywood 'Bertie Blade' with the head elongated to look like a blade. Painted in our colours, no computer games then to play on.
Happy days.
 
I once nutted them railings......
The ball was kicked into the stand and my dad who was about 10 rows back punched the ball as hard as he could,
it hit me on the back of the head and the considerable momentum propelled my head against the railings.
I can remember a copper and TC coming up to me and asking if I was alright,I was’nt but I got over it a lot quicker than my dad
who couldn’t believe he’d singled me out in a packed stand.

It was a cup match as I was on terrace. If it were to happen now, it would have been a major incident and game abandoned, instead the game went on as if nowt had happened.

My Uncle Frank of the mounted police had a ticket given him. If I had to hazard a guess, I would say the opposition was Burnley,but stand to be corrected by Silent Blade.

Remember the railings collapsing and before that a barrier did also. It was picked up by the crowd and passed over heads being deposited over the white railings to the right of the goal, kop side.
My memory tells me the injured from the railing collapse were laid on the straw which had covered the pitch to prevent frost postponing the game.
Repeating myself from a past post :- United in blue shirts, white shorts and red sox, loaned by Barnsley, their change strip. Sunderland in borrowed Newcastle strip, Black and white stripes. Used to cling on to them at the front of the kids pen. Corner of kop and John street. Being told to get down every 5mins by steward the miserable git 😁

Nothing changes , it was a mega spozzy goal ...Warnock was there as well and it still ranckles with him ! We were in the 6th round 4 years running with a three times played semi -final inbetween ! , my mum had to hit me over the head to get me to sleep on the last replay...of course I woke up to the usual gut wrenching disappointment AND I was the only Blade in the school ( S6 ! ) Never then as an 11 year old would I have believed we would never get to a final ?. I'm 70 now and the Gods STILL hate us.... Covid aghhh LOL.

1960 played pigs at the lane in FA cup 6th round unfortunately we lost 2 nil.
Had my picture in the morning telegraph with a group of other young blades with long faces having just lost, we were up against those railings.
Also was another picture of young pig fans
Smiling as they had just won.
Wilkinson scored there goals and Springett had a blinder in goal for them, we didnt deserve to lose .
