Long ball

I agree, it’s not pretty and non of the top clubs do it so we should be upset by it ...

Whilst enjoying the improvement in overall play, am I the only one who is disappointed that 7 out of 8 clearances by Henderson are just long balls towards McB ?
Against the Arsenal, where it is a known weakness, I wouldn’t be too concerned.

However.

If this is part of a wider “back to basics” strategy .........

It’s so all the moronic pundits can carry on churning out their bullshit cliches about how physical and direct we are. Also it adds to their argument about how dangerous we are from set-pieces.

I can fully see why we were compared to Stoke today. We never looked to pass out from the back when Hendo had the ball and we took 4 or 5 long throws. We also had the audacity to kick a few Arsenal players like the dirty northern bastards we are.

One thing I noticed is that it took us until the 2nd half to realise that if we all pressed their defence then they panicked. They seemed to realise from the off that we panic like mad if we are pressed at the back.

If your striker has the beating of his marker in the air then why not use that. I counted 3 decent chances from mcburnie headers today plus the one in the the second half when he controlled a kick from Hendo with his foot

I’m happy to see the long ball if it’s used effectively ,I don’t give a shit if the top clubs don’t use it.
When we have a first team worth £500,000,000 then I’ll get picky.
I want players committed and giving 100% and tonight they did and I’m thrilled with their performance which means
I can deal with defeat.
We were unlucky tonight, the ref bought every dive from the arse and Mcburnie deserves special praise.

Are you overseas with a strange time difference or do you struggle with the timings of night and day?!

We've always gone long from the goalkeeper the majority of time under Wilder; certainly when the goalkeeper is under any kind of pressure. In league one we went out from the back more, but this coincided with teams standing off us and Coutts taking the ball in really deep positions. We're a mixed team.

When under pressure I agree that Henderson should clear it, but earlier this season when we were going really well he passed or threw it out when not under pressure.
Yesterday he kicked most of the time to very little effect.

Don’t want to upset you, but we lost !

Getting a win now is all that matters. Get some points on the board and then see if the added confidence from this will improve team & individual performances.

I am a believer of mixing it up.
So am I and that is why it was good to see Robinson’s long throws.
However kicking long nearly all the time is not much of a mix.
Also the long throws were of real quality but Henderson’s kicking is not yet.

When we were at our best in the Autumn / early winter we had the confidence to play it out from the back and players were showing for a ball from Hendo .

A lot of that confidence has since evaporated and they are no longer doing so , resulting in hopeful long punts from the goalie which are neither effective nor pretty to watch .

Sensible (and effective) tactic to use against Arsenal...would only be concerned if we continue to use it for the next few fixtures.

When the so called top sides do it the pundits call it long precise passing, when we do it they call it direct.
And it’s been done to us a few times this season , Liverpool - the barcodes last week isn’t that how Egan got sent off , hoof ( sorry ) lovely weighted pass down the middle 🙄

If Pinchy were still alive, he'd be calling Wilder a dinosaur. 😆

We seemed to have changed our style since the Liverpool away game on New Year’s Day.
Up to that game we played some beautiful quick short passing with the occasional long ball. However in that game we were totally outclassed.
We’ve lost our confidence since that game we play more long ball relying on counter attack.
