Walker, and to some extent Maguire, were a little bit before I had the time & inclination to watch a lot of Academy games. Maguire always stood out physically - Man Boy. And he had a great trick - burst through the line with the ball at his feet, difficult to shake off. So, yes, I'd say it was possible to spot his extra something. But, generally, NO I wouldn't be able to recognise long term potential in any of our Youngsters. I'd back myself to say who had played well on any given day, and to say why. I'd back myself to judge who are the best of the bunch. But, spotting potential is the Gold Dust isn't it? One of the Carrier Bag Firm has subsequently started scouting for The Blades. I've had him up against the wall many a times - "how do you judge potential" - he's done the courses. He can't give a plausible answer.
Danny Hall asked my views on David Brooks for a Sheffield Star piece. He asked me whether Brooksy was the most exciting youngster I'd seen. I asked him NOT to print my answer which was - no, he was nowhere near Diego at his peak. Playing Great vs Potential vs Eventual Career. Right there. You mention your friend's Lads injury. Diego, Callum Semple, Oli Greaves - all had bad injuries & struggled a bit when they came back. It must be so difficult for youngsters at that stage of their career. Is that answer helping?
 
I think its impossible to say who will ultimately make it and have a successful career. The lad who stands out at 12 might not even get a game at 16? If it was glaringly obvious, Manchester City, with all of their footballing resources and expertise, would not have released David Brookes.

There are so many factors that can affect all kids developments as they transition Through their teens, into adulthood and those who play football are no different I suppose. Some get released at 16 and are late bloomers and go on to have good careers in football? It’s a very harsh profession, not just for the lads themselves but for parents who have made sacrifices to get them to training three times a week, in some cases for maybe ten years or so.

It appears to have gone under the radar on here but I noticed Sam Ackroyd has also been released, who at 14 was playing above his age, won the golden boot at The Milk Cup and seemingly was very much one for the future. GLTTL

We’re entitled to compensation for any of our youth players under 24, even if they’re out of contract, providing we’ve offered them a new contract. We also have the option of agreeing a deal direct with the signing club, so we could accept a nominal fee plus either/and performance related add ons or a sell on percentage. So if we do accidentally release the next Ronaldo, we’ll cash in later.
I think we did that with some of the kids that left last season.

I remember after that Ipswich game where he scored a screamer, he was really positive and on about trying to stake a claim to be in the team when we played Boro as he wanted to play against his home town team or something, but he just vanished.

I think he has bad asthma and found our training difficult if memory serves, quality player when at it though.

Interesting moment in Adam Oxley’s interview today with Wilder where he asked about those that had signed short term deals.

The Ox: “Is there any chance that any of these could earn longer deals, is that something going on in the background?”

Wilder: “Yeah it is yeah.”

He’s approaching Warnock esque levels in the one last contract stakes.

Kieron “barnicle” Freeman could also be potentially the first person in the history of football to come to the end of a loan contract and be returned before later signed, be loaned out to a division below, be placed on the transfer list, be placed on the released list, and yet somehow get another reprieve.

On here everything is evidence of us being skint, even spending £23m on a prospect.

David McGoldrick was pictured with last season's shorts on during training a couple of weeks ago, means we can't afford kit.

Our seat covers at Bramall Lane don't go up as far, means we're selling O'Connell.

Wilder hasn't got airpods like all the other managers, Prince has stopped funding us.

Gone from Pukka to Wright's pies, means we're only getting free transfers this summer.

I have to say i've been disappointed about this during my trips to the Lane this season.

But even we, the home of the Pukka Pie, have replaced it with some disappointing crap.
Although the introduction of Red Leicester sausage rolls have softened the blow.

To be honest, I like a Wright's balti, but I've never sampled them from the Lane. Last time I bought food at a football match, Lee Hendrie scored for us, so that's about 12 years ago.

Meat and potato pie by the way, and I thought "I've just paid the best part of £3 for a tepid pie that costs 80p from Morrisons" so I've never bought another food item since. In fact I was almost certain that at the time the pies we sold were the same as Morrisons pie counter. Maybe a pie historian knows.

Those sausage rolls sound decent though to be fair.
 
Im guessing the players released are.. Holmes, Duffy, Clarke, Freeman, Thomas, Heneghan and Morrison? Not seen this anywhere like.

First team contracts - June 2020

Would like to see Basham's contract sorting out next, extend out to 2023. He's been a revelation for us and has earned a good pay day. Likewise, Egan & Baldock could do with extensions out to 2023. I would think Egan may be the trickier of these two to tie down as his market value has...

Guessing no official goodbyes are being said to those you mention until replacements are in or they sign elsewhere. Rodwell and Jags ended up getting new contracts, guessing Freeman is the only other one on that list that might get another year as cover if he doesn't get a better offer elsewhere. We must be struggling if Leon gets another year!
