Sheffield United Released List

Southampton have 55 players they are retaining and are releasing 9
Spurs 51 and 7

I can't even be arsed to count Chelseas numbers.

Why do Southampton need 64 professional players?

Hello mate, just saying as you posted this straight after my post, hope I'm not one that you're 'calling out'?
I'm not exactly controversial on here, and cracked a pretty lame gag about someone with a (very) long name. That was it. That was the (crap) gag.

The problem with 'calling out' things that aren't loaded at all, is that it misses and discredits things which are. Anyway I've no problem with you, just maybe save it for them who deserve it (there's plenty).

Cheers,
Yours, someone without a typical white, Anglo Saxon name or descent

Couldn't agree more, it was a harmless joke about the length of a name, not the ethnicity, I'm the most anti racist person I know, and how anyone could think that's what you were referring to is beyond me

In fact the only uncalled for thing I've read on here was the response, assuming you must have been referring to his name not being a typical name, I'm sure if you had made the same joke about someone called Bob William Charles Godfrey Smith, you wouldn't have got that response for a harmless joke

Would Clyne and Lennon be worth a 1 year deal possibly?
We need to be studying these lists carefully as money will be short supply next season.
clyne - yes (but will end up at Bournemouth)
lennon - hell no... another winger?! really???

Unfortunately some people try to find prejudice in everything, even though attitudes like that are part of the problem.

Stevens and Robinson are right boring twats, not having any middle names to make fun of.

Hi Silent Blade
Firstly, I'll make the point that I am NOT a fan of "oooohhhh look, funny sounding name" posts. FFS, the First Team have got Black Lives Matter on their shirts. Didzy is "leading the way" with taking a knee. Have this one - it is not OK to joke about someone's name just because it doesn't sound like he's of White, Anglo Saxon descent. I'm calling people out. Fuck Off with that.
Interesting point of view. I'd be keen to hear how commenting on an interesting presumably Polish name, held by a white player and in a way which isn't disparaging at all has a direct bearing on BLM.

Or are you telling me I was equally in the wrong to comment on my old mate's middle name -Jason Raphael Ward - another white bloke who's mother happened to be into art?

Or are you making assumptions about the motivations behind people's comments?

Well I suppose it's just a matter of time before the 'It's coming home' video is banned due to the mocking of a certain German name....

3.01 in ...

By the sorry if this is a stupid question but is Maguire the brother/relative of Harry?

You should be grown-up enough to know the difference between all of these things. A white bloke with a slightly different sounding middle name isn't likely to be hugely impacted by people taking the piss out of said middle name. However for a person with a very different heritage, who from the colour of their skin already faces massive prejudice, taking the piss out of their name would be the kind of thing that ostracizes and alienates them even further. That's the difference to me, anyway. And I don't think intention matters, because that doesn't always change how it's received. You don't have to agree, but I felt like I should reply because I hate seeing people try to simplify such complex debates with a "if this is bad, then this must be bad" logic. We're intelligent human beings, we should be able to think deeper than that.

Anyway, back to that released list...

So Ravel Morrison not on the released list, or the retained list...

Did we all dream that we signed him and it never actually happened?

I've spotted the fatal flaw in your argument.

IMO most problems in the world are a result of stupidity in one guise or another and there are a lot of dim people out there.

I am assuming (rightly or wrongly) that he was released from his contract when he moved to Boro, although it was documented as a loan for transfer purposes.

I don't disagree - but you're missing the point. What I'm asking is how commenting - not taking the piss, just simply commenting on how unusual a name is - can be offensive. It only becomes offensive if the taking the piss is assumed by the reader.

And if we work to BLM thinking which specifically focuses attention onto black affairs (which I fully understand and support) rather than "All Lives Matter" - then can someone explain how commenting on the middle name of a white, Polish (extraction) player has any relevance - especially to the point of "being called out".

Ah, I'd thought you were defending the commenting/joking re: the younger academy lads' names. I think you're making the error of automatically thinking Ball_Sup (Phil) had a big issue with your post. Not that I can speak for him, but I'd be inclined to think he had bigger issue with the references to the younger lads. Not your comment about Jags' middle name.

I've said my piece....

Now..... I'd find it easier to react to the list if I knew what the rough strategy is. (I've mentioned in other posts). We've just got rid of our U23 Coach. And, we're waiting for the next one to be appointed. On one level, I am surprised to see - Ta'Shae, Callum Gribbin and Connor Leak-Blunt on the released list. Primarily because they only seem to have been here ten minutes. I've barely seen Connor play. But, I could make a case for both Ta'Shae & Callum. I guess it's simple. We've had a better look at them now & prefer a parting of the ways. Ferguson, Ompreon, Sheppard & Young have played a lot of games for us. But, I'm not surprised to see them on the released list. I have rated Oli Greaves in the past. He had a bad injury. And, I thought they might have given him another season. Reece York is a proper player - hard working, committed, organised, scores a bit as well (for a midfielder). Captained the U23s often. But, he's run his course I guess. Not surprised, but disappointed to see him on the list - because he seems a nice young lad.
Realistically it'd be very difficult for any of the players I've mentioned to get anywhere near the First Team in the coming years.

I jest on the other message but Inthink a point you say often is really pertinent here Phil. While you have a lot of love for the academy lads and enjoy their output - than chances of them breaking through into the forst team of even a championship team is incredibly slim.

My friends son has just been released by Burton Albion at 16 and its like his world has collapsed as he was always the outstanding player in his age grouos up until last year where he had an ACL - but hes doing a scholarship with college and Mickleover Sports and who knows what the future holds.

Bottom line is there are probably what, an average of 10 maybe home grown players in the squads of the top 30 cluns of the country and even less in the first team. That alone tells you the odds of any of these hundreds of youngsters making it are slim.

Could we potentially lose a gem or two - maybe - but I think we have to be very happy and proud of our academy output when you look at the number of thise players we have produced at other clubs. In terms if academy prospects we are certainly punching.

Lets just hope the cogs fall into place and we get another gem developing before you.

Sorry Ball_Sup (Phil) I released I waffled for ages then forgot to ask my actual question. Given that you watch the academy a lot, the minimal chances of players breaking through and the fact we have had players like Maguire and Walker who have commanded huge transfer fees (not to mention others playing in the top flight) - when you saw those players play - did they have an extra 'something' that made them stand out and coukd you recognise that again in the next batch of young uns?

When i was a lad kids took the piss out of me all the time, I was just a fat lad with Asthma !!
I used to say " if they carried on taking the piss out of there'd be nowt left 🤣

Can we just talk about football for a change ?

Cheers LB. And maybe I'm guilty of making assumptions too. When Sup_Ball (Phil) specifically flagged up non Anglo-Saxon it felt like an attempt to widen the net beyond Black names and to include Polish. 👍🏼
