I think we looked bright the first few minutes. The team was pretty much the best we could field, both in terms of adding the link play of McGoldrick and the pace of Mousset, while keeping as much continuity elsewhere.

Shame about their first goal. Sloppy one as well, a simple throw in. Very disappointing. Our three left footers all seemed to be sucked towards the throw in taker and are taken by surprise as the throw goes past them. Then Norwood fails to deal with it and we're panicking.

So a nightmare start, but we try to get going. We managed to string a few passes toghether and looked a bit like our old selves down each side and also switching play. We do this partly because it is our style, but also as we know we have to keep some possession, or else they will push us back, which would be difficult to deal with for 90 minutes. The problem is that our neat passing moves is so slow that the opposition always get men behind the ball. The opposition centre halves are always ready and waiting when we do get the cross in. This is making it hard to create. Secondly as we pass the ball in the opposition half and push more players forward, we're vulnerable to counter attacks. And Man Utd are a very good counter attacking team these days.

So that's the first half, we try to keep possession, because we have to, but we don't create and unless we're very careful we get hit on the break. Eventually we tire and they do peg us back. Before the second goal our midfield can't keep up with play, leading to Jags breaking out of defence to close down first Bruno, then Pogba. As the ball is rolled out wide, Jags stays in "midfield" marking Pogba, probably thinking he's done the midfielders' job twice forcing them wide, they should surely cover him at the back:

But Norwood doesn't agree he should cover for Jags and moves in behind Enda. The cross beats them both and an uncomfortable Bash fails to block Martial's shot. I think the likes of Basham and Robinson look uncomfortable as parts of a two man central defence and struggles when the "sweeper" is missing.

Poor time to concede again, just before the break.

At half time I think Wilder wants to avoid a heavy defeat. 6-0 would be damaging for the morale. So he puts on Berge to help cover some more space in front of the defence and we defend deeper. Apart from breaks I think we mainly hoped to keep the score at 2-0 and then go for it with 15 minutes to go. I think we defended ok in the second half, although I realise those who were hoping for a quick come back were disappointed. We kept them out and made it a bit harder for them to find space. After the hour McGoldrick was finished, so we added the pace of Zivkovic.

But before any attacking mentality change was made, Man Utd got their third goal. Some brilliant play from them and maybe we were just to tired mentally and physically to keep up. As the through ball was played Jags pushes up to play Martial offside. As Rashford isn't closed down well, that's risky, so he may be regretting he didn't drop deeper to cover.

Before the third goal I was expecting a switch to the diamond we've used before, but there wasn't much point after that.

All in all, I'm not too disappointed. I think we'd have lost this fixture 9 times out of 10. We just didn't have the luck (or concentration) we needed at some key stages to get a result.

I’m a huge fan of Norwood and he’s been sensational for us but he has shown an unwillingness to dig deep and get stuck in or track a man for at least 3 of the 6 goals we have conceded this week.

It now seems that letting Stearman leave was a mistake in hindsight.
You reckon Stearman would've been better than Jags? I certainly don't. He was a liability in his last few games for us

Yes, I think he would have done and that’s not meaning to be disrespectful to Jags as i think Stearman would have played tonight if still here as i believe Jags only played out of necessity and was playing with pain injections.

Stearman always did a brilliant job when stepping in to replace Egan in the first team. Not taking in to account when he played the cup games alongside Kean Bryan.

Third option, sign proper back up to challenge for number 1 with Egan. For what it's worth, I don't think Stearman would have been a better option, because I think they're both about the same level, but at least Jags is quick (for a bit, he tires) which can help in the Prem, but we shouldn't really be in a position where our first choice is out and we're relying on either a 37 year old on a farewell tour, or a upper midtable championship CB.

Same goes for GK, Moore has been replaced by a loanee every season but league one, so why is he still playing in the Prem, Verrips doesn't seem to be trusted either, we need to spend. Up front too.

I hope this has been a wake up call to the Prince to get on the blower with some sponsors and accountants, because the first 28 games shows us as a team well capable of challenging for Europe and taking on anyone in front of us, and these last 3 shows us as a team who's squad is as thin as Bible paper and needs serious reinforcement in summer/autumn/whenever the transfer window opens.

I'd have liked to have seen Jags get some minutes against Newcastle if we were going to play him at Old Trafford. He, understandably, looked off it. He's 38 and hasn't played in 6 months.

Ideally, we would have had Retsos. Not sure what happened with him.

Makes you wonder why we’re persevering with Rodwell on the bench given the absolute reluctance to use him.

Jags has gone - we saw that earlier this season. The legs just aren’t there sadly.

It's not his legs, it's his positional sense. I don't think he can play as a sweeper, which is what he's been brought in as cover for. He couldn't play in Basham's position either, that's because of his legs.

Game plan by the players for Man U - Play something that loosely resembles football for 90mins, and hope nobody notices were on our arses.

Which games? You mean Middlesboro when he scored a vital winner and helped us to a clean sheet?

He was really poor in the Cup ganes this season.

For the record I think Steadman is a Champ player and Jags is done. Those two, Roswell and Robinson were and would not even been regulars in the Championship.

The drop off from our first 11 to the back ups is huge. We literally have a squad full of Champ-league 1 players waiting in the wings if players lose form/get injured as has happened

I watched the game last night, first 4 or 5 minutes I thought yes we're back, then oh shit, after the water break I thought yes we're back, then oh shit.
Then I realised I was looking at our game and thought that I'm thinking like we're some sort of plucky league 1 side playing at old Trafford in the cup, I can't blame the defense at all really the main problem was that we had zero attacking play so we played the majority of the game on our 18 yard line so we were begging for them to attack, so in that way we were lucky to get away with a 3 nil loss, our success this season is that weve played higher up the pitch and attacked down the flanks meaning their wing backs cant afford to join attacks.
I think plan A is the overlapping centre halves but I think we should abandon the quest for Europe this season and try and develop an effective attacking plan B

Jags did a number of good things as well, and I wouldn't put too much blame on him for the first two goals.

For the first, several players are pulled out of positions and we are taken by surprise by Norwood's miss and Rashford brilliance in exploiting it.

For the second the midfield is awol, and Jags prevents the danger by closing down two Man Utd players within shooting range. Norwood lets him down by not filling in, meaning Bash is left with two players to mark.

For the third I said ideally he wouldn't push up (risky offside trap), but he, or other people may disagree (may have been Baldock who played Martial onside, and not everybody are fans of the rule saying drop deeper if the man on the ball is not closed down well). At that stage fatigue, heat, lack of match fitness, dizziness may have affected his decision making though.

He's 38 and hasn't played in 6 months.

He’s still 37, though will be 38 in August. I’m usually aware of his age as it’s the same as mine – watching Jags yesterday was the realisation for me that this is probably an age where I will have to give up that childhood ambition of becoming a professional footballer...

Baldock tried as always but wasn't getting anywhere. Technical ability is in question as it probably always has been.
Bash lost his man in Martial for every goal
Jags legs have gone and doesn't have the positional sense to play this role at 37 having played as a back 4 RCB all his career
Robinson is championship standard
Stevens is playing like a Portsmouth player

And Simon Moore. Oh Simon Simon. Simon Moore. Why did he get a new contract? He either dives too soon or too slow. He really is crap.

I know a few saying our back-ups are not up to it and we need to spend money to improve the squad. We know from the coronavirus situation that the budget has been cut - understandably. I think our priority has to be improving the starting eleven with maybe two key additions - a centre mid and centre forward are the obvious places, but also a keeper if we don't retain Hendo next season. We cannot afford to have a quality back-up for Egan as good as Egan. Maybe we do need to upgrade on Jags for next season, but there's more pressing matters and within our budget we can't have the quality of back-ups that the bigger clubs do. Robinson is a prime example of a player who, whilst not spectacular, hasn't let anyone down, and appears to be a decent squad player, Ben Osborne another. Another of similar quality to him in the middle would be fine by me. Obviously if Egan and JOC break their legs in the first game and we have both back-ups we're screwed but, that's the risk you have to take when it comes to the budget we have.

Or we could spend say £5 - 10m on decent back-ups for JOC and Egan and they'll sit on the bench for every game next season unless we get injuries. Its a really tough balancing act and things have dramatically changed post corona. We may find that our squad is no better next season than this and we have to go with the same starting players bar maybe 1 starting addition.

A young centre half from League One who can go out on loan next season, such as the lad from Ipswich, maybe the way forward, although he could well cost us £5m and he needs to play to improve. We'd still need an older head to be a back-up in such a situation.

Therein lies the problem for the Prince. If any good has come from the last few games it has confirmed what we already knew the back up isn't good enough. We are not going to get away again next season with having hardly any injuries for 28 games. We need quality back up in a number of positions especially goalkeeper, and for JOC and Bash for our style of play to function in their absence. That means improved sponsorship promised at the fans forums and possibly new investment.

I don't buy into we shouldn't spend a lot of money on back ups to sit on the bench. We are in the Premier League you need quality off the bench to cover for injury suspension and loss of form the latter being very evident amongst a number of our players at the moment.

The pandemic has hit football finances hard us probably the worst in the league as its our first season. Having said that the Prince has to find ways to bring more money into the Club to boost the budget so that we have players off the bench who can compete in the EPL on a regular basis. The manager has worked wonders he needs to be given the financial support to help him move up to the next level.

Isn't Roswell where the aliens live?:p

No, more so his last 4 starts in which he put in 2 bad performances and gave away 2 penalties
