thought he was injured?.. now we take players on loan 'pre' injured.. saves us doing it i suppose.. :-)

How long before Leeds declare their interest?

Cracking loan if we can get him.

He had a slight niggle, which is what held the deal up. Logically United wouldnt have wanted to commit to it being unsure of his fitness.

Don't worry about that. He wants to come to the lane. He's said the whole way along he wanted to play for us next season.

I'm chuffed with how we are shaping up compared to our rivals. Bartley is a good addition.

It was all lined up before he was suspected to have broken his collarbone. If this now isn't the case I'm guessing the deal is back on.

Seems strange but this is the Star coupled with the fact that I hold Sheids reporting in the lowest regard I'll hang on before believing it.

thought lowton looked good yesterday.. whether he could survive the rough and tumble of div 2 (yeah i know.. i prefer the old designations) at this stage of his career remains to be seen

I think he'd be fine and he has to get his education at some point so why not now?

I would be disappointed if we loaned him out. We need him here.

Send him down the Jagielka route of football schooling. Start him at right back, push him into central midfield for a season and then send him to centre back. Sorted.

He seems to be able to play everywhere so why not!

Don't forget to engineer a few Goalkeeping crises to make sure he has a turn between the sticks too!

then sell him to everton/spurs for a fraction of his real value.. at least put a sell on clause in this time kev!

I like how a loan spell in which he couldn't get in the team is described as successful.

I like how you turn every single positive into a negative.

You see Bartley as a positive, I see someone who could barely get in the side when he was on loan.
Struggling to get in the side doesn't suggest a successful loan spell to me but then Simon Walton didn't have a great loan spell at Crewe but that didn't stop us signing him either.

He's 19 years old! (18 when we signed him last). He had a number of games in the first team but was competing with Morgs and Nosworthy for a place, one is the club captain and the other was also a loanee who we had to guarantee games to.

Doesnt that explain why he wasnt an ever present lenners? Or is that just too logical????

I'm not after an argument as such. I just fail to see how anyone could turn this signing into a negative thing.....I must admit though, you're having a right good go at it!

Len rates Barley as garbage full stop, there is a thread somewhere about it.

I see..........What would Arsenal know eh?

What are your thoughts on this Bob? I know you dont entirely believe its going to happen yet but would you be happy with this? I like the lad but I wonder if Arsenal are concerned about his likelihood to play regularly. We certainly need more quality options at the back but I'm pretty sure Wenger would want him playing every game........where as he's more likely to be fighting for a place with Noz!

I've no problem taking Bartley on loan but not at a cost to Lowton. If Lowton is going out on loan somewhere then I could understand it to a certain extent but what's the point of taking a younger player to give him experience when that's exactly what Lowton needs ? The plan might be to keep/play both but if not, is Bartley going to come to sit on the bench, doubt it.

You'd have thought Bartley would only play if either Nozza or Morgs are injured.

It's happening Lou, apparently the early knee jerk reaction to the injury was premature. As for him getting experience the lad will get games due to injuries to either the right back (Nos moving across) or the centre half. Lawton might still get loaned out, which if it is to a league one club I don't have a problem if he is going to play week in week out.
I would suggest he would get at least 15-20 appearances over the season and Arsenal probably would be happy with that.

I do take your point Jim and its a perfectly valid one. However;

a) I feel that at the moment Bartley is used to playing with better players and has a bit more exposure than Lowton so meets our criteria for the first team (thats not to say I dont like Lowton as he looks a good player too).

b) Based on our injury record we need as many bodies as possible. Bartley has already played in our first team and provides a big physical presence.

c) Lowton can play in several positions and has looked comfortable wherever he is deployed. Bringing another centre half in isnt going to hurt him IMO. I personally think he would look good at right back.

I think the other important thing to remember is that we need a squad and if we're going to challenge for promotion we need a squad full of competition and good cover. Having Morgs, Noz, Lowton and Bartley would enable us to have that. More often than not you will use 3 to 4 centre halves in a season and I could see all four of them getting a decent number of games along the back four.

This has to be a good signing for me and will only make us stronger. But yes I agree on the one thing, that if Bartley is brought in it shouldnt be to the detriment of Lowton who looks a fine player and could play in the same team.

Playing Lowton at Centre half this season would actually put him back in my opinion. He's better getting games out wide first because throwing into the heat of centre half in the championship would be a real test. Morgan can't hold his hand throughout 90 mins of that kind of football and a big mistake could really set him back. Just my opinion of course but I'd rather he got blooded at fullback or right midfield.

I'm glad its happening as I thought the deal was off at one stage. I think its a win win for both clubs. He'll provide a good physical option for us at the back and will gain experience in a tough division which Arsenal will be happy for. Having Morgs, Noz, Bartley, Lowton and Ertl - all able to play at centre half, puts us in a situation where we dont have to worry about that area of the pitch throughout the season. There is some quality there too!

I'm starting to get excited about the new season now. If we can get Bartley (Bartlett according to Blackwell), Dickinson and possibly a right back in then thats a great foundation going forward.

UTB :D

I tend to agree with that, which is why I mentioned earlier that he would probably benefit from playing at right back. He has the attributes required to play there as well and as you say, is less likely to be exposed by more experienced campaigners.

It's a tricky one, do we keep Lowton in the squad where he may only play bit parts over the season or loan him out where he'd get guaranteed 1st team football. If we get Bartley and Dickinson in then it's probably worth sending him out on loan because I think that would benefit him most at this stage as it did with Kyle I and II.

I think we need them all to be honest our squad isn't big enough to be loaning out young players who are on the brink of the first team. I think Lowton is in blackwells plans this season but don't forget we need back up.

I agree that he needs to be in and around the squad and we do need him purely for numbers but the problem is, he'd benefit greatly from 20 or 30 games which I'm not sure he'd get at this stage, unless Blackie knows otherwise of course.
