So chances are we won’t make Europe (still possible mind) but let’s not forget the ultimate goal at the start of the season was avoid to relegation. Well we’ve Managed that as well as exceeding all expectations. I actually believe we will have dodged a bullet if we fail to make Europe. The last 2 games have exposed some frailties and could be sign of things to come next season, I don’t doubt our commitment and believe we will survive next season but the season objective will again be to avoid relegation. I expect it to be harder for us than it has been this year and think Europe could be an unwelcome distraction to the main task in hand.

Thanks to CWAK, the players and the board for the amazing season, let’s all try and enjoy the remaining games.

I was just thinking the same. Not so much about Europe, I’ll take it if we got there but anything more than staying up was a bonus. Villa and Norwich have shown how difficult it is and to stay up without ever being in a serious relegation fight is an achievement in itself.

Why do you think that 2 games played in an artificial vacuum of no atmosphere could be the sign of things to come, rather than the other 28 games where we have competed & bettered teams from the start to lock down? Surely you don't think that the last 2 performances are the "real" us & everything that went before doesn't count?

Probably something in between

Everyone keeps banging on about 'the new normal', I'm just hoping our 'new normal' isn't playing like a bunch of idiots and forgetting the principles that got us where we were in the first place. The other possibility is that this 'momentum' that we've had for a few years contracted co-vid 19 and has gone forever.

The ultimate goal at the start of the season is to win the Premier League. Mathematically, that's no longer possible, but we should still aim to climb as high as we can.

I thought winning the prem was next season!??, god I'm confused.

No mate I don’t believe that’s the real us, I was thinking more along the lines of injuries, we’ve done well with the lack of injuries this season. Think the last games have shown how a couple of injuries can affect performances and our system, I think we may not be so lucky next season so it just may be a whole lot harder than this season.

We have indeed done fantastically well whatever happens but a bad end to the season could have knock on effects.

There won't be loads of money to splash around and a top drawer keeper will be a priority.

We don't need to go into the break with low confidence, question marks over various players, and risk the hangover that you often see.

Okay cool, I agree injuries have hurt us at a crucial time & 2 poor performances have shook us up a little as it was so unexpected, but i feel that is down to our standards dropping rather than a collapse of epic proportions. We have looked short of dynamism & drive but I just cannot believe that is down to lack of fitness, our fitness team are too professional for that in my opinion, but we have been off the pace & need to know the reasons for that asap. I think all of us knew we didn't have strength in depth to cope with multiple injuries & it has come at a bad time, but when is a good time? Saying that I am confident we will regroup & go again.

Not necessarily it should have shown to CW et al where the weakness lies and that this needs addressing in the close season and transfer market. Losing a couple of key players and the overlapping forward play we have so far enjoyed and succeeded at disappears. It either needs Jack Robinson and cover at the back bringing upto speed with this style of game play or a Plan B needs coming up with that is a success with either existing or new players. Plus we need to address the lack of goals up front.

We have had a great season so far just hope the last remaining games dont dampen it in anyway. Forget Villa and Norwich they are going DOWN. I often wonder if Norwich do go down is it worth going for Puki ?

As disappointing as yesterday was, I think you have to compare our season with the teams we came up with who are both rooted to the bottom. If anyone had told me at the start of the season that we would be competing with Man Utd and Spurs for Europe then they would probably been sectioned. Even if the season does fizzle out and leave us in mid-table, this will still be the best blades team in my lifetime.

Fook that!... I want to finish as high as possible so we play in Europe and win the FA Cup! And then next season do even better!
Yes we were shite yesterday but I’ve every confidence we’ll bounce back. Talking about dodging bullets is the wrong mental attitude for me. If the team think like that we’ll definitely be in a relegation battle! ... onwards and f’ing upwards!! UTB

I do wonder if CW is playing the long game. Having bought SB & knowing JL will possibly/probably depart, he is keen to bed in SB whilst we have a final 10 game run in with no pressure of having to get points to stay up [which is unprecedented in football in the PL]. It gives game time to try a few options if he wants. Whilst if things went well & Europe was on then great, but that is not his primary focus, that is looking beyond this season. If he can get SB sorted then that will be 1 less to introduce to the team before any new additions join. Teams that add 3 - 4 players often start slowly as they get OK with the system, & ours is complicated!

The injuries & sending off will also give him chance to see the mettle of those that come in, & to confirm that we are a bit thin beyond the first 14. He has already said that we have been in contact with those we are interested in signing, & probably knows who he would be willing to sell.

Also all 3 promoted clubs lost over the weekend to a goals ratio of 8-1, & possibly 2 will go back down to the Championship, this could have been us but for the first 28 games & CW will be keen to make a good start next season, & I think he is using the current run of games to prepare for that.

One telling statement from yesterday was that since August we have only lost to L/pool, MC & NU, which is fantastic in reality.

Personally I would say it has come at a good time
We have managed to get above and beyond everyone’s expectations without been hit by injuries or suspensions, allowing our rhythm and momentum to take us to a European place
It was never going to last a full season, and now we have to deal with both

But imagine if we were in Villa or Norwich’s situation then took this shit?

Hopefully we regroup and push onto FA cup final and a euro place, but irrespective of what happens hereafter, safe by Xmas, FA cup quarter final at least and heading into the last half dozen matches fighting with Man U, Spurs and Arsenal for Europe is fuckin legendary

Good points Steve26272. When I said it had come at a bad time I was mainly referring to how we all thought we were the fittest team & would enter the restart with great expectations, so we are disappointed with that, but yes I agree in absolute terms far better now than earlier in the season which could have resulted in a season long relegation battle.

I mean I was thinking what the OP was three and a half months ago

I don't buy the "Europe = unnecessary distraction" argument at all. We played more games in all competitions as a Championship side last season than we'll face if we make Europe, so there's no reason why that should be a distraction. In fact, it's a massive attraction. It will have players of the highest calibre worldwide interested in playing for our club for a start. Then there's the financial rewards - and not least, the uniqueness of the occasion, something that no Sheffield United fan, alive or dead, has ever seen.

I totally agree about it being a fantastic season though and I fully expect us to have another fantastic season, next season, and I don't see a place in Europe spoiling that.

Wolves are into the latter stages of the Europa League for example, and could easily finish higher in the league than they did last season.

Thoughtful, insightful and well considered post. I hope your thinking is correct. Wilder might not admit to it publicly, but he is a deep thinking and forward looking coach.

We will certainly miss the points which Hendo saves for us.

A good point which is often overlooked .

I reckon that if we'd had an average standard Premier League goalkeeper this season , we could be anywhere between 8-12 points worse off which would put an entirely different perspective on things .

Finding someone who can match his ability to make crucial saves at key moments is going to be extremely hard , if not impossible .

It's definitely not impossible Joe, but I do agree that he's one of the big factors in our success. He's not irreplaceable though, no player is, but it won't be easy finding someone of a similar calibre.

I wonder what the opinion is on Verrips within the club? Difficult to know because he hasn't had many opportunities to show what he can do in competitive games, but he won a lot of admirers, nationally in Belgium, for his heroics at Mechelen. I wonder if we'll get to see him between the sticks tomorrow night, or whether we'll revert back to the competent, but not outstanding, Simon Moore?

We seem to be linked in the rumours section with an array of foreign goalkeepers, a couple of them from Turkey. So it kind of suggests, if true, that we are looking to bring another goalkeeper in and I doubt we are looking to do that if a) We felt Henderson was staying for another season and b) We are totally confident that Moore or Verrips can step up.

It will be interesting to see what happens if the Blades qualify for Europe and Man Utd don't, but Man Utd offer Henderson the number 1 jersey next season? Will he sacrifice European football with us for a chance to be number 1 at Old Trafford? Somehow, this feels like a very hypothetical question right now! 🤔

Good points your Reverence.

I'll repeat what I've said previously: I think Berge was bought to be a central midfielder, competition for Norwood. The reason why he hasn't been deployed in that role so far is because Norwood has been outstanding - pre lockdown. 😉

I'm reluctant to pass opinion on Berge because he has come from a totally different standard of football and he's admitted himself it's a huge step up in pace, in skill, everything. I've also seen many players down the years who didn't impress at first but went on to be key players for us. The issue for Berge is probably one of fan's expectations as much as anything else - we aren't used to spending that kind of money on one player and we thought we'd be able to see the reason why from his first kick of a ball - and we can't!

I watched him really closely v Villa and I thought he used the ball very well on occasions, he's a calming influence and I like that about him, however, a calming influence is great when you want to slow the game down, but when you want to speed it up and get more urgency running through the team he doesn't seem like the best option at present. The lad just doesn't impose himself on the game in the way that we've seen him do it on YouTube at his previous club. He also seems to be struggling to adapt to the pace of our game and he got caught in possession and fluffed a fair few passes as well. If I was writing a report on his progress it would read like my old school reports, "Could do better".

I think the only way that he's going to adapt is for him to have exposure to more games at this level. To that extent I agree with you that there is an element of "bedding in" that may be going on. The only thing I'd say to that though is, fine...whilst we are playing well and winning, but based on the performances and results of the last 2 games I doubt that Wilder will put the long term future of Berge ahead of short-term results. So I'm expecting to see him dropped to the bench for the next game.

As for Lundstram, his rise from bang-averageness to where he is this season is nothing short of remarkable. I still think there's a bang-average player in there, waiting to get out, and I think he shows that fairly regularly with his ability to vanish for large periods during a match. But when he's on it, he's on it. And he has a spark and a sense of urgency, coupled with good technique, that put him ahead of Berge in the selection process for me. I don't think he will be here next season. I think he has his eyes set on perceived bigger things. I'm sure if Liverpool came in for him he'd walk back over the Pennines to play for them. But somehow I think it's more likely he'll end up back on Merseyside with Everton - and finish his career with Tranmere Rovers. 😃

I totally agree. We may not get this chance again for another 40 odd years, strike whilst the iron is hot, I say.

You sometimes have to gamble and go for it. Let’s worry about the Thursday-Sunday effect of games when/if it happens.

I do wonder with SB if its a confidence issue, the PL is a big stage & its a big step up for him. At times he looks like his main thought is don't do anything wrong, which is not a bad starting point, but is not likely to win many games. I like him a lot & think there is a good player in there, just not sure if we can get the best out of him, which as I said may be a confidence issue initially.
