Another Pointless Linkup?

If we were to link up with Estudiantes, I would imagine we would be the team with most to benefit from it - a la Fradi getting more from us than we do from them.

It'd no doubt be a good ally for us to have and would raise our profile with Argentinian players. And I expect it wouldn't cost us. Just a tie-up, a sharing of ideas and maybe a couple of young Argies.

It'd be like Sao Paolo that was suggested a year or two back.

agree with Wombwell, step out of the RAW shoes and try and think positive 0 i know its tough...but hey...

I see what your saying but i find these things to be nothing but spin too be honest, they release this statement and people genuinely think that we are going to get players from the argentinian divisions because we have a link? This isnt the reality of it for us. its just another tool in the arguement box for birch and co. i can see it now "things havent gone so well for us on the pitch recently but the club is moving forward, the link ups in china, australia, hungary and now argentina clearly highlight sheffield United are becoming a global club"........finishing 8th in the bloody 2nd division. whoop dee doo.

DP8789 - if you seriously don't think that United see not a single benefit from these link-ups, then why do you think we pursued them in the first place, and have retained them so vigerously? Think about it...

We wont see anything from it on the pitch.

Although we may something worthwhile money wise? erm probably not.

I am sure there is a positive somewhere but I dont know if we will ever be told what the positive is.

For a start, just having our name connected to Estudiantes is beneficial. Let's say that in five years time we're a PL club - long shot at moment I know - and we're fighting it out with Bolton for a new Argentinian signing. He supported Estudiantes as a kid and has heard of us. It's got to help hasn't it? And like I said before, I doubt this one is costing us.

I can see people's issues with some of our global links - particularly the ones where we are investing - but this link, if it is successfully created, is a 'no brainer' for me.

I can see a time in a globalised world where SUFC having a link with the best supported teams in Argentina, Hungary and a rather large area of China might pay off!

No, because Bolton would offer a bigger salary than us. That's how it always works isn't it, we go for a player then are outbid or won't match other clubs wages and that's why we tend to end up with the rubbing rags that nobody else wants.

:gallop:

It maybe a link that opens doors for McCabe's businesses but that might help the club if it means he doesn't want/need so much money out.
Let's hope so, perhaps they need a new ground building with an associated retail and shopping development or summat.
In footballing terms it means eff all, like the rest of them.

Does it cost a lot of money? No.
Does it do us any harm? No.
Might it do us some good? Yes.

End of justification.

Will we get any players from it? No.
Will we be sending our youngsters to get experience there? No.
Due to the above is it a complete and utter waste of time? Yes.

Pointless.

It was Estudientes who insisted on the link up in order to get the friendly.

So we either agree to a link up which costs us nothing but puts our name about a bit and get our friendly, or we say no and get nothing.

Hmmmm

Hmmm interesting indeed... What do they want from us?

If you can't give away too many details then don't, but what kind of links? Do they want to send players here to put them in the shop window?

SUFC's journey into the 'global market'

Fradi - scandal, not even ours but McCabes building project anyway, managed to fatten the KN calf for sale at the market
Chengdu - scandal, plenty of work for McCabe
Australia - we got Carney....
Brazil - our major link out in Sao Paulo turned out to be one person at the club who's now passed away... subsequent calls from KM to further business links result in being put on hold listening to 'The Girl From Ipenema' at International call rates until KM wearies and hangs up
Estudiantes - our relatively tenuous link has just left the club...

complete waste of time

Fradi: Numerous young prospects getting first team experience in a competitive league. SUFC's name linked to the biggest and most popular team in Hungary.
Chengdu: Problems there have been but there is no doubt that the future of football will involve China. Long term benefits > short term problems maybe?
CCMariners: I fail to see the point of this one. Again, Australia is a growing market in football though. Weakest link for me though.
Sao Paolo: It was worth a shot. Losses would have been minimal.
Estudiantes: Again, what have we got to lose with this one?

Give it chance.

Four young players in this last month from Hungary and Australia, all good talent. Given that these links are relatively new, I'd say this is a really good sign about future potential developments and a good indicator of what other links can bring. Got to think long-term and not just next week.

anyone who thinks these links are anything other than McCabe empire-building is seriously deluded. sorry.

I believe that is the general plan, to get their youngsters seen in the more affluent European market. I would suggest that this isn't their top end players but maybe youngsters who aren't likely to make the first team. You have to keep in mind the level these guys are playing at, it would be like getting the castoffs from Barca, Inter, Bayern etc.
Should be pretty good pickings really.

What about work permit rules? How are we going to get work permits for players that aren't in their first team never mind not playing 75% of competitive fixtures for their home nation?

Its a good point, but the youngsters can go to Fradi and if they have played Under 19's or U21 we could make a case.

Again look at the young players United and Arsenal have released. You have to be one hell of a youngster to break into a Champions League first team.

Look at the Kyles at Spurs who aren't going to get a sniff.

Do we know it will cost us no money? I bet there'll be a load of "delegations" flying and accomodation between the 2 clubs. Do you really believe that all the costs of staff (actually silly question, I'll bet you do....:)) we sent over to Hungary were picked up by an "eastern block" club? I don't.

UTB

Alco not being pedantic, (well I am actually) but Dunc said "does it cost a lot of money".

I'd say as this is coming from their side not ours flights and accommodation for our delegates will be next to nothing comparatively and certainly won't cost us a lot.
