I like how he refers to himself in 3rd person as ‘Derm’. What a prick.

You're welcome. It's an elegant solution, albeit tricky to implement in the actual details, but still.
I've just said on another thread that i think the issue is that the default answer to the yes-or-no question that GDS is asked is "no.". Therefore in this case, silence is consent! Its like saying "Did it go in, yes or no, and if you stay quiet, i'm going to assume its a no." But effectively, having Hawkeye chuck up a "CHECK" signal every time it loses track of the ball would cover most of these allegedly very rare situations where it doesn't know.
Its like the GDS equivalent of the "guilty, not guilty, not proven" verdict options in Scotland...
If the watch doesn't work, how does VAR let the ref know when something happens during a game? They turn it off for the warm up as standard procedure when the players are out warming up and knocking balls in to the net every 30 seconds. They then simply forgot to turn it back on when the match started.
Anything else that is released is a cover up.
Hawkeye fucked up and VAR should have bailed them out.

Surely there should be a way for the ref to be notified (on the watch) that it has not been turned on - e.g. 'System Inactive' displayed, and a requirement to check the watch at the start of each half to ensure its on.They turn it off for the warm up as standard procedure when the players are out warming up and knocking balls in to the net every 30 seconds. So they were perfectly able to inform the ref that something had gone wrong with the technology and a goal seemed to have been scored?Earpiece
Yes, which is what they should have done but they were probably taken by surprise and assumed from the angles they initially saw the ball hadn't fully crossed the line. It’s human error. In hindsight they should have told Oliver to delay the keeper from releasing the ball so they could look at it properly. It was a balls-up but an understandable one. Unforgivable if it ever happens again. And we know next time Hawkeye fails, it will be to our advantage but this time VAR will be involved which will just add to the sense of injustice. So they were perfectly able to inform the ref that something had gone wrong with the technology and a goal seemed to have been scored?
I don't know any more than anyone else about what happened, but I would be surprised if Hawkeye were lying in their statement. It doesn't seem to be in their interests to lie this way.
If they had said "the system wasn't switched on", "the referee's buzzer failed", or something similar, it would be a major F up and embarrassing in the short term, but wouldn't cast doubt on the overall suitability of their system as a whole. That would be the way to lie.
The explanation they actually gave - that the cameras were 'occluded' so couldn't award the goal - suggests that their system is not that good, and might even endanger their contract with the PL in future. Hawkeye's camera-based system was selected over alternative technologies (e.g. chip in the ball). But if it can't work reliably when there are players and goalposts in the way (pretty much the main thing it is needed for!), then why not go with chip in ball next time the contract comes up for renewal? Definitely not in Hawkeye's interests to come out with this explanation.

Didn’t something like that happen in the Bundesliga? Hadn’t the ref blown for full time then dragged them all out again as VAR had seen a penalty? This doesn't explain why they told Sky that the problem had been rectified for the second half. That's pretty impressive work if they can identify and analyse the problem, and then install new cameras (remotely) all within the space of the fifteen-minute break.
They don't even need to stop the keeper releasing the ball. Play has been pulled back two or three minutes in several cases (I'm sure that Man City had one that was four or five minutes). They could have easily looked at the next break in play. Common sense would say that they could have looked at half time, since the incident was in the 43rd minute.

So it seems a failure of the protocols is far more to blame.
From what Hackett says, Oliver could have used a pitchside monitor, but chose not to because he had confidence in Hawkeye. Ditto VAR, who could have reviewed it, but chose not to because they had confidence in Hawkeye.
I'm not sure how we remove that reliance on Hawkeye from the minds of officials without a challenge system being implemented so that if captains are convinced they can compel the ref to review, rather than the ref being able to wave it away.

As an aside there are 3 famous people from Banbury and they share a middle name. Gordon fucking Ramsey, Dermot fucking Gallagher and Gary fucking Glitter.
