Does anyone have the distance covered stats for last night?

I have faith Berge will come good, and wouldn't criticise his overall performance as he takes time to adjust to the Premier League. What worries me is that he seems to show so little of the battle and fight that is essential as a United player.
 
The position Berge is playing is not his game. His natural position is central and in Belgium given the license to roam forward and an ability to break up opposition attacks.

You can see how talented he is, in that position, from the many highlights out there and why he's so highly rated. He's a square peg in a round hole at the moment.

Let's hope there's some way his talent can be utilised better in his current position.
 
I know I'm not the biggest Berge fan from what I've seen, and that's just my view of him, but I'm really hoping that the newer players we have are aimed at keeping us in the league next season, because the Retsos/Zivkovic affair is baffling to me?
And, last night's game was crying out for a Besic to liven it up, it was such a flat unflowing game...

I know everyone needs a drink every now n then, god knows I needed several during the game last night myself, but I'm a fat bloke on a sofa, the players of 2 premier league teams should be able to play 45mins of football without having to stop for a 10minute sit down!?

That game was set up for us and villa to look cunts!
First game back, any other time would've been Citeh v Arsenal, but no, if anything was going to go wrong it would be the smaller clubs and wouldn't mean so much.
Im still seething about our goal that was that wasnt, and there's no excuse for us not being awarded that, especially with all the technology! Football is dieing, because people want to mess with things that aren't broken, ruining it for us all!!

I’ve got several issues with this:

1. what the fuck would Besic have done? We needed more attacking threat not less 🤣

2. The players are playing high pressure high intensity football after 3 months off with no proper pre season to adjust your body to 45 minutes of running. I don’t think 1 minute drinks break is too much to ask, they do it when it’s hot anyway.

3. Us being first game back has nothing to do with Hawkeye and VAR/the refs fucking up. They’re just incompetent.

Because everyone had a shit hot game didn’t they? As a whole we looked so slow and flat. Norwood was awful, Billy did nothing, Baldocks crosses were all over hit, Lundstram was crap. To single out Berge is pathetic.
We only looked better and actually moved forward when L.Freeman and Mousset came on
 
Sander Berge is clearly not a shit player. However, that midfield was not working for us last night and there was more energy and attack when Berge came off and Luke Freeman came on.

But it is also fair to say that Norwood looked pretty anonymous too, apart from his goal that wasn't. No Ping

As for Mc Burnie, I was not a fan when he arrived but he's growing on me. Strikers never look any good if the midfield is not producing anything

Seem to recall my post mentioning let’s assess in January , with all being well, we should have enough time to properly assess...12 months doesn’t seem impatient ..even to an supposed impatient twat like me ....
 
Berge was absolutely fine last night. He's calm and strokes the ball beautifully.

McBurnie was extremely lightweight, I would have subbed him and not Billly..

Out of interest, how did Leicester manage the players that were struggling to adapt to the Premier League - did they persist with starting them, minutes from the bench, or...?
 
I actually thought I saw some decent stuff from him last night. His confidence is growing... slowly but surely. When he finally gets the confidence to run with the ball we’ll see what we paid for!
 
Can we take the red tinted glasses off when talking transfer fees? I've see the comment that Wilder is poor when paying big money and also comments about more from Berge given the fee.

Forget the Blades equivalence bollocks, record fees and that. We are a Premier League club, and as such Wilder isn't making amazing big money signings, he's still strolling around the reduced aisle looking for the bargains. On the fee paid, Berge is just a squad filler at about 50% of clubs at this level. If Berge had signed for Man Utd, he'd have probably gone straight out on loan, yet here he's straight in and some expect because of the fee he will deliver us the CL spot above said Newton Heath. What we have paid or not paid in the past has no bearing on what we are doing now, even less the ability and standing of a player.
 



He's very talented, and got amazing ball skills for someone his size. But the difference between the Belgium league and Premier League is HUGE. Give him time.

He got all the skills to become a dominant midfielder, but he still needs to develop and is only 22 years old. He will be ready next season. Kinda like how Neres started at Ajax (bought in the winter, didn't really shined in the first 6 months but then exploded and destroyed all European full backs).

He had absolutely no options to pass to when he got the ball either. It’s not a rapid forward line, we didn’t have overlaps going, we weren’t committing men forward. It was poor in an attacking sense. Moose starts for me.

As for Besic, we needed a better link between defence and mid, and everytime I've seen him play he literally runs his socks off, and oddly enough he's skillfull and has scored In a blades shirt!

If we needed more attacking threat, why then did we not go 4-3-3? Was that because the players were to tired to play a different formation??

And as for "High intensity football", did you watch the game at all!? It was, as to be expected, steady.
These players have been keeping fit, working out everyday, training the past 2 weeks, playing games, and yet they can't run about for 45mins? Come on.

No, as you say, he wasn’t great but I didn’t think he was worse than anyone else. We were decent off the ball, stopped Villa scoring, which few teams have done at Villa Park this season but our passing and fluidity was off. Villa should really have been hoping for three points given they’re fighting for their lives, I’d be a lot more pissed off if I was in their position.
 
All Berge lacks is fitness imo

He seems to run out of steam and he also still hasn't quite picked up the pace of the Premiership

These are redeemable factors. He certainly has the technical ability. Once he get's to the fittest he's ever been under CW's guidance and his stamina improves and he understands the Premiership, he'll be an asset
 
Why is no one slagging off Sharp he was just as ineffective last night. In fact half the team were miles off what we were when it was stopped..Villa looked knackered near the end. Game pace will take a couple of games give everyone a chance

Yet again an away clean sheet and again no defeat on the road . Amazing stuff
 
It’s his 4th game and I’m not sure how we set out tactically and team selection did him any favours. Lundstram who’s been with us for years s

He’s had three games with us without a pre-season, trying to adapt to a wholly new system which is pretty unique amongst otter clubs across Europe. Then there was a global pandemic where he’s been doing fitness training on his own for a few months.

He’s only 22 and whilst he seems intelligent and responsible, I suspect he’s still getting acclimatised to a new environment with the backdrop of all of the above.

Needs a bit of patience. UTB

Christ, here I go again. Almost a full time job this.

No one is saying only Black lives matter, of course all lives matter. But not ALL lives are being impacted due to systemic racism. Not all lives are being killed by the police and it then swept under the carpet. Therefore we need to focus on the issue of Black lives being treated as less valuable.

Back to Berge. Forgot he was playing at times yesterday, but I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist yet. If he was a mistake, oh well, but I think it's too early to know.
 
It never ceases to amaze me how us football fans can moan at anything.
Now we've got individuals complaining about racial matters derailing football.......Who are then derailing threads about individual players with racial matters.
 
Id be more worried about berge if he was actually playing the position we signed him and wasn’t making an impact.
We wouldspend 20 million on a left back and play him centre back so why play berge out of position.

Either play him in a 2 with Norwood or instead of Norwood or don’t play him at all he needs to be sitting when he gets the ball he can’t play ahead of play IMO
 
Two things to contribute.
1. Yes we looked better when Freeman came on, but Villa also looked knackered by then from all the pressing they had done by that time.
2. The demand for “Running around a lot” is in danger of becoming forum members replacement for demands for more “hoofball” - whatever became of that?

It was different for every player, with some of course not making it.

Slimani and Adrien Silva are just two off the top of my head who didn't fit into what we wanted at the time.
In different systems they probably would have been good players for us, it was less about their ability and more about not fitting the style of play we wanted.




For Ndidi, it was as simple as a change of system. Puel's 4231, whilst having 2 DMs rather than 1, actually made us worse defensively. Once Rodgers played with 1 DM, Ndidi has since become the most wanted DM in the league, without having someone getting in his way all the time.

Pereira we persisted with starting, but sometimes it would be at full back, whilst others it would be as a right winger. Defensively he was getting caught out all the time but was very good going forward, as a winger though he didn't have the finishing consistency of a 'forward', so after about 6 months of improving that defensive side, he's remained at full back ever since.

Soyuncu played a handful of games with Maguire at the back end of Maguire's final season, didn't look anything special, appeared to get caught out a few times. Then was thrown in the deep end after we sold Maguire, as obviously selling Maguire for so much meant other sides wanted a fortune from us for a replacement. Turned out it wasn't him being caught out the season before, but Maguire making him look bad.
(Not sure how Maguire gets away with being caught out defensively so often, it's amazing how because an English center half can actually pass a ball, his poor defending is completely overlooked).

Chilwell looked very average at the start too (Not that Leicester fans think he is much better now, I don't think Rodgers rates him either, but looking forward to the stupid fee we will get soon), but after 45 minutes of tearing Atletico Madrid apart, he's earned some strange and certainly undeserved reputation as a top PL full back.

Vardy is the big one, he was in and out of the side both during his first season in the championship, and his first season in the Premier League. During his first season in the championship he didn't look like he would be anything close to what he is today.
What Vardy is proof of though is how time can improve a player to levels you wouldn't think was possible, if of course that player is willing to work hard to get there.
Its understandable why teams dislike him, yourselves of course for other reasons aswell, but he's that player in the team that every other club dislikes. There's nothing I get more annoyed at though when people try to label him as some kind of 'one trick pony', he can only play in behind etc etc......
He's one of the best strikers in premier league history, his figures alone tell you that, scoring at the same level of Kane and Aguero.....But he gives you so much more on top of that, and is scoring at an even higher rate now we play possession football rather than on the counter, completely disproving the myths about him.




It's a combination of mainly time, and adapting to the player's strengths.
Adapting a player to a new position simply hasn't worked for us.
