“National’s the one place on earth, you get service with a Smurf”. That jingle must have been late 70s/early 80s, my Dad used the National on Hastings Road/Abbeydale Road South and got all the Smurf stickers!

And finally Abbey Garage at the bottom of Twentywell Lane. Went through multiple guises owned by Stephen Hinchcliffe and then David Hinchliffe. I worked there for about 12 months as my first real job before waking up realising the car trade was not as glamorous I thought it would be! It was called Abbey 84 at that point.

I worked there when it was owned by Gordon Lamb with Saab, Daihatsu and BMW motorbikes franchises. I was a spanner monkey in the service department. The car park was on a rather steep slope and it wasn't unusual to have a "run away" Saab if the car had been driven hard and the keys left in the ignition. Saab sold the idea of only being able to remove the keys if the car was in reverse as a security feature. In reality the handbrake worked on the front brake discs, if the discs were hot when it was parked the handbrake released as they cooled hence putting it in gear. Luckily they had huge rubber bumpers.

In other news that Phil Oakey from the Human League bought (or was more likely given) a BMW motorbike from here.

The worst company I ever worked for sadly.

John Gray
Yep, Johnny Gray. After United released him he worked in the Atlas melting shop at Firth Browns.
Played alongside him in the first team at Browns. He was obviously talented with a good left foot, but cruised through games.
Very diminutive and had clapped weight on from his United days so running wasn't his favourite pastime during a game

My dad told a story about an old Firth Brown colleague who ended up playing for Bolton. When Bolton played at the Lane a large Firth Brown contingent turned out to watch him but not to cheer him on. They were most vexed when he scored against United.

It's always saddening to see these old pictures of trams, in locations where there's no longer a tram route. What were planners thinking in the 60s? Trams - gone, local train stations - closed...
Agreed, but times were changing, it wasn’t just Sheffield who got rid of trams, and trolleybuses in Rotherham but the whole country was at it and please remember, it’s not a train station, it’s a railway station. 😉

Oh yeah, of course. The car was obviously deemed king and there started to be motorways built, cutting through city centres.

It is a massive irk though that you go around Europe and the majority of countries' major cities have excellent public transport and here, outside of London (and probably Manchester), it's non-existent.

I agree 100%, and Manchester has done well as it seems to be the governments pet “up north” city. It’s gone beyond a joke that our council hasn’t bothered to extend the tram system, tram train extension aside since it was opened.
At least Sheffield doesn’t have the massive through roads cutting the city up like Birmingham and leeds.

The privatisation of the buses in South Yorkshire undoubtedly led to the demise of a excellent public transport system it almost got the point where the fare would have become free as the cost of collecting wasn't economic. I remember people moaning that if South Yorkshire council levy for transport was dropped their household rates would significantly drop; they didn't.

As per my post above, the tram system is owned by Stagecoach the council do not have the wherewithal to extend the system particularly now after their budget has been cut by over 50% in the last 10 years.

Is the car a Popular?
Did anyone name the make of the car in your Figtree Lane post? The one with the spare wheel embossed in the boot door.

The car in that photo is probably a Ford Popular, but they also badged it Anglia for a while, I'm not sure why. I've been looking for the "Figtree Lane Post" but am not sure which one you refer to? I fancy my chances of naming the mystery car in that post, if only I could find the post! 🤔
