I saw a documentary about Sheffield a few years ago. Palin was talking about the 1966 FA Cup Final and waa referring to Wednesday as 'we' throughout. However he then endee the segment by saying 'And I'm a Sheffield United fan, and I was upset!'.
So while he clearly has a fondness for Wednesday, he's more of a United fan.
Nope. My dad was in the same class as him at school and he was definitely a Oinker growing up. Now whether this has changed as he's grown older is up for debate.
Not one of your best , can’t believe some people have liked it too TBH .Rally driver Colin McRae.
His last words were "Come on you Blades"
I've mentioned Michael Palin before. Being a fan of his travel programmes I've seen the lot & he contradicts himself in the series. One episode he claims to support the Blades whilst in another series on a different episode he nails his colours to the team from S6.I have been writing a quiz for some friends in Durham who are big Sunderland fans. I was trying to find a famous fan question for them, I found Peter O'Toole and Kate Aidy but thought our list of famous fans to be far more impressive. This is the list from wikipedia I wondered if anyone wanted to add to it. Their "boards" listed Sugar Ray Leonard as a fan but it turns out he likes Stoke so sometimes confusion exists as to who supports who. The one I envy is Fulham who have Margo Robbie as a fan.

He's got a Blades badge on one of his book covers (forget which, but my mum has it). When he's in India (Around the World in 80 days, I think). He's in Mumbai and asks what the Sheffield United score was. he then gets in a tuk tuk which has been adorned in Blades flags/stickers.As I say, on this documentary he clearly says he's a United fan, even while talking about Wednesday. I can't speak to his childhood of course, but that's what he said, in his own words.

Might I have kick your father as well?Nope. My dad was in the same class as him at school and he was definitely a Oinker growing up. Now whether this has changed as he's grown older is up for debate.
Lost me a little there, is it the middle class you detest or the rivalry that we (I include myself in that) can't avoid and he (Palin) can?He is on record as saying he spent his youth playing football on Hagg Lane. There was some footy posts on there when I grew up so it seems he is a footy fan. I doubt he had a choice as to his schooling but I'm sure the bruises will have faded by now had you played against him. In his spitting Yarns the team he supports (Barnstoneworth) are wearing red and white stripes so he pinned his colours to the mast there. I just think with him being very middle class he doesn't get involved in the rivalry that I can't avoid as I detest them.

He played football on Hagg Lane? I spent most of my childhood in the 60s playing football there, on the grass courts of the abandoned tennis club.
I think Banner Cross played on the full sized pitch at the top. We used to retrieve the ball from down the crags behind the goal for a few pence.
Did you live in the Den Bank area? Was the old tennis club at the bottom of the field? And did you go sledging at the bottom of the crags into Rivelin Valley?
Yeah bottom of Den Bank Drive from the age of 10 so that would have been the mid 70's. The hump was a great jump could get a few feet until they put the sty on it. I think I used to go via Marsh lane after seeing my mate in Crookes through the cemy and the small woods.Yes, lived on Marsh Lane for 20 years, till 1980. The old tennis club was at the bottom of the field and there was another football pitch on the field below as well. Made a sentimental return before a game last September, the tennis club is still there, overgrown but the courts are still identifiable. The field above, with the cricket square and football pitch above has had horses living on it for many years now.
Yes, I risked death many times sledging at the bottom of the crags, going too fast over the hump near the bottom.......
I take it you lived nearby?
Sorry for the late reply just seen it. Them being the pigs and therefore I detest them and therefore can't escape the rivalry it was badly worded (as I'm not very middle class). I like Michael Palin loads I still think he was the best Python. I do not like the class system as I've seen too many talented people not recognised whereas rich people tend to trumpet themselves. This is from experience but my post was not anti middle class in this instance.Lost me a little there, is it the middle class you detest or the rivalry that we (I include myself in that) can't avoid and he (Palin) can?

Were you KES or Tapton?
Please, no need for apologies, as good as this forum is there are more important things in life and if truth be told I probably need it more than yourself.Sorry for the late reply just seen it. Remember finding a text book at High Storrs where he'd written his name in the front (so effectively autographed it) or someone had however if it had been a prank I'd imagine they would've written 'Steve' which is what he was known as but it was 'Stephen'.
Just going off the net but he is down on the net as one of our fans he is not down as one of theirs. Michael Vaughan seems to be their most famous fan whereas the current England Captain is way down the list as one of our fans. They do have the odd cool fan like Richard Hawley (he has praised us lately) as well as Alex & Jarvis (Why when he's from Intake I don't know). Otherwise we have a healthy list of fans who are famous and in the public eye. It doesn't matter of course but everyone says hi to fans we meet abroad or away from Sheffield so it's always good to know who else follows Yorkshire's Number 1.
So Jarvis was a Blade but Something Changed?I think the story is that Jarvis switched from being a “Blade” (in a very loose sense) to being a pig as something to have over the Gallagher brothers in the mid 90s as Man City were relegation fodder while the pigs were sitting in mid table.
Like many of Wednesday’s “massive” supporter base he’s said in many interviews that he has nothing more than a passing interest in football. Barely qualifies as a fan.
Im not sure she is really....but her dad is.This morning on her bbc radio 2 programme, Rev Kate Botley said she was a Blade.
Anyone said the young lad in one of the Christian Bale Batman films?
I knew Naz from him being a kid. He's not a Blade. Any idea which brother?Prince Naseem‘s brother is a staunch Blade and Nas did divulge to me that he is a Blade, but admitted to a very passive alliance!
I watched all his series more than once & I just remember 2 occasions when he mentioned football.Regarding Palin. If anyone has read his three volume diaries (spanning four decades) he does explain his allegiances in there and even mentions how it annoys some people. Basically once he moved from Sheffield he wants both teams to do well but says United were always his team out of the two.
