BladesPod: Top 5 Cult Heroes

Morning all,

Did a pod with Roygbiv in which we pick our top 5 Blades "cult heroes", including some discussion about what it means to be a cult hero as opposed to an actual hero, or someone who was just quite good. Surprisingly (to me) we picked 10 different players, and we also had a bit of chat about some honourable mentions who didn't quite make the cut.

Would love to know who you'd pick - I think this is by it's nature personal to each individual so I imagine there'll be quite a lot of variation.

Haven't listed yet so don't know who you've chosen, but I think a cult player has got to be a player who isn't as good technically relative to his value to the fans.
Mine would be:
Bob Booker
Chris Basham
Wayne Allison
Dane Whitehouse
Jake Wright (Sr)
 
Enjoyed listening to that. I think the idea of them not being in a successful team is a tricky one – I like the suggestion, but if that’s a requirement you’re stuck with picking the best of some bad squads. If it’s basically 5 that you personally really had good memories about but who wasn‘t universally liked, then my 5 would be:

  • Steadinho
  • Chris Porter
  • Big Jostein
  • Franz Carr
  • Kozzie
HMS Shipperley I felt was quickly liked and recognised as really important for us – I don’t really think his status with fans has ever really been in question. He was of course our top goalscorer that promotion season too – I’d say that’s often the thing that’s forgotten given Kabba & Webber were in the same squad.

Hodgson – he was definitely a very enjoyable expert summariser briefly on Radio Sheffield. I can remember them discussing Nicky Bangor’s pronunciation in a game against him (did it sound like ranger or anger), and he basically started calling him “old banger” for the whole game.

The Sheffield Derby match you mentioned that they broadcast on the official YouTube channel looked terrible because they didn't show it in the original aspect ratio.

It was zoomed in that's why it looked so blurry.

Why would they do this Peter?
 
So not legends but were really admired despite not being overly blessed with talent.
I would advise anyone to watch Goon on Netflix for the type of player that IMO would be cult hero's.

So mine would be
1st Trevor Hockey
2nd Bob Booker
3rd John Stead
4th Gareth Taylor
5th Michael Doyle

It's a modern day fad that drives me mad.

Basically all TVs used to have a screen that looked square (4:3) but modern day screens are rectangles (16:9).

So when old footage is shown broadcasters often zoom in on the 4:3 picture so that it fits a 16:9 screen.

It's a nightmare because you're essentially cutting off the top and the bottom of the picture which makes it unwatchable.

There is a version of the Wednesday match on YouTube in it's original aspect ratio.

It was sensible for Warnock to get a striker in if based on what he was seeing of Shipperley he had doubts on whether he could last the season. The idea of signings in the 2nd half of the season to help get us over the line is fairly standard – think Hanson, Carruthers, O’Shea in 2017, Madine, Dowell, Hogan in 2019 etc.

What was perhaps the problem was that Warnock went a bit mad when he didn’t get his preferred 1st choice target Cameron Jerome. To be honest, had we got him I think he’d have been a lot more successful and arguably would have been great with Hulse the following year. But instead, we chopped the money refused by Cardiff into bits to buy any other striker that was available then. The Akinbiyi signing looks a lot worse than it perhaps was through the requirement to sign Horsfield after his loan. Bruce Dyer was in contrast a low-risk signing. Warnock also, which gets understandably forgotten, brought Brian Deane back at this time too!

I work with a woman who absolutely despises Mark Duffy, for reasons I can't begin to fathom. This started well before the contract shenanigans, I should add.

I'd say Basham, as he is now, might be too good to count as a cult hero.
 
Watched the first part of it so not totally sure who was on the list but I quite like the criteria set down the only one being that, 'no heroes can be included on the 'cult hero' list, of course a definition of the criteria for hero is then required, some are obvious; Sharp, Henderson, in fact probably most of the current first team. Not sure if he was mentioned but Mel Rees always generates a wave of emotion on here every time his name is mentioned, so I'd say that he is a given for the list.

Sun Jihai is a great shout - he was genuinely fantastic with the ball at his feet...and a red card waiting to happen without it...a joy to watch either way. (Same description could apply to Mo Besic actually, and it’s a shame we won’t see more of him)
Andy Reid’s cameo in the relegation season was brilliant...if we’d have got him for the season, he may have kept us up on his own

Loved that - particularly enjoyed the recollection of the euphoric moment when scougall scored at Wembley. Think you summed it up perfectly it was sheer disbelief mixed with joy in the concourse at half time!
 
Around the time of the southampton league cup match it felt like Basham was becoming a Cult Hero. Now he's skinning most of the best players in the "best league in the world" for fun, he's closer to Club Legend status the way it's going.

For the record my 5 are Porter, Gareth Taylor, Katchuro, Marcello and - can't believe he hasn't had a mention yet - Alan Cork.
