Ex Blades that were quality for other clubs but shite for us

Mendonca was young when he had him of course and didn't get many chances did he? A few said he didn't suit Harry's style of play also. Shame he wasn't given more of a go, but maybe he wasn't really for the first division when we had him.

Lee Hendrie springs to mind as someone who was great elsewhere but not for us. Dean Hammond was very popular at Leicester and Southampton, we all know how that ended!
 
Don't get me started on all the duds we bought after their stars had wained. Christ..... we've had more than our fair share of embarrassing has-beens at this club. Were it not for the wonderful cameos Paul McGrath provided I wouldn't have bothered commenting here as it still rankles with my generally happy Blades memories.

He played for us twice. Bassett signed him after he’d been quite successful with Rotherham (I think Bassett may have let him go in the first place). I struggle to remember why it didn’t work but I don’t think he was great a picking up knock downs, scrapping for balls or had much pace. With good service he was a decent finisher.

Dean Hammond probably the worst signing in the last few years.

How do we know Hammond was very popular at Dilbert Street or Walkers crisps stadium and Southampton?
With who?

True, but I'm not so sure his hear was in it either. There's other similar examples, James Harper has been mentioned. In Blackwell's defence, I think Britton came to us because financially it was a really good offer for Britton because he was happy at Swansea and of course he went back there part way through the season.

Even now, if you look at who's done well for us in the middle of the park, the players with big hearts, good work rate, destructors and all rounders have done the best in my view. Not many ball solely ball players have done well in my view, Gordan Cowans is a rare example. If you think of Stuart McCall as an example, he could really play, but he also was great at getting stuck in. All of the current three centre mids can handle themselves and make a tackle also. Might be been harsh on Britton, but was there a touch of the neshness in there?!

I believe Hammond was part of two promotions with Southampton and got promoted with Leicester. My uncle follows Leicester and said that their fans rated him, I know that's only one fan, but that was his perception from other Foxes fans. It doesn't excuse how crap he was for us!

I never saw him play but I think you're right on what you're saying with Medconca from what I can remember from general opinion. I think he could have played off Deano, since we often played Corky who was slower than Brian Gayle!

Its a shame because we really struggled for a partner for Deano ever since Agana got injured and then was sold, and after Deane went Mendonca could have been the main man, maybe. I'm sure Harry did sell him twice as you said, but clearly thought there was a player in there because he bought him back from Rotherham. Talking on Rotherham, I was always convinced we'd buy Shaun Goater when he was there, but that never happened sadly.
 
Alan Young signed by Porterfield for about £160k which in 1983 equalled our biggest transfer fee paid (for Sabella) at the time. Good reputation at Leicester in a higher league but struggled with form and injury for us and was moved on after only 1 season. Do recall him scoring a superb overhead kick in a 3-2 win over Oxford though.

Richard Cadette scored goals for fun at Southend and then signed for us....

Apart from one very memorable goal, Akinbiyi failed to live up to expectations.

I felt like he followed a Billy Sharp esque time with us without the final third act – with us as a youngster and then moved on to the lower leagues at a young age, made a surprise return that wasn’t as successful as hoped, then ended up ultimately overtaking us when he eventually made it back up the division. He retired at 33.
 
David white, was class at city but was piss poor at the blades. Always remember him picking the ball up for a throw in before it had gone over the line therefore giving a free kick to the opponents. Summed up his time with us.

Forget not completely shite, he wasn’t even remotely shite. He got 9 goals that season from right-wing, joint third total with Kabba, and was either first or second in assists. He also despite the groans from plenty when he’d lose possession never shied away from trying something more difficult rather than whatever was easiest – that’s what we needed at the time. He was completely overly criticised that season – some of the abuse he got from around where I sat used to drive me crazy. He played a huge part of that season. I’d go so far as to say that had he not been there we might not have gone up automatically – Gillespie certainly wasn’t up to speed that season, and was much more of an impact sub till we got promoted.
